It's nothing new. There were legit arena deals before Bennet moved the Sonics to OKC. The Muckleshoot Indian Tribe was willing to front the cash for a new arena down in South King County, but he flat out ignored them saying there were no valid options and he had to move the team.

This just makes it "How are we assured you're not going to fuck us over like the last guy did?"

And in other news, why won't Stern die?

Assuming you need 46 wins to get in (like last year), the Lakers would need to go 31-17 the rest of the way.

Also, expect all the team swapping and name changing and work stoppages to kill brand and team identity with the NBA the same way it did with the NHL.

Not my fault that us foreigners tend to be better at grammar than you 'Muricans.

"Foreigners" is the subject of the sentence, and the pronoun before it simply renames it. As such, you should have used "we" instead of "us."

The Kings leaving Sacramento is a shitty thing for the Maloofs to do, but it's not going to do a thing to the league, because no one cares outside of Sacramento.

Kevin Johnson news conference has no real news except that he takes this as a sign that the Maloofs are finally willing to sell and that he's looking to assemble buyers of the team that would keep the Kings in Sacramento.

So this sale could get delayed and then get turned into a bidding war due to some sort of waffling with the Maloofs and KJ trying to power up another offer.

How do you explain the US' apathy towards the NHL before those problems?

Even during the lockout, Ballislife clips were getting more views than NHL games ever did.

The NHL has never been popular in the US. The thing that has hurt it the most is lack of ESPN coverage. The lockout that wiped an entire season only led to increase revenue, especially in Canada.

The NFL had a few work stoppages and then had five relocations of franchises, including actual important franchises unlike the Kings,  in the span of about a decade--yet it only became more popular.

I'm pretty sure the fact that franchises changed cities and names and that lineages and histories of teams got lost along the way hurt the NHL. Nowhere did I say that was solely to blame for the NHL's problems as some of you are about to be dumb enough to imply.

No, you said that plus work stoppages "kill[ed] the brand" for the NHL.  But Malek's right on both counts: it was never that popular in the US, and the league's failure to get ESPN on board easily dwarfs those or any other problems with how they've run the league.

Anyways, the Kings already played in then abandoned Rochester, Cincinnati, and Kansas City.  If leaving those cities didn't bring the association crumbling down I'm not sure why ditching Sacramento would.

During the last sixteen years, the NHL has had one franchise move (unless you want to count the Islanders upcoming move from one part of the NY area to another part of the NY area), and the franchise that moved didn't even exist until 1999--and most of the city, Atlanta, probably never knew it existed in the first place.

Unlike in the NFL, no historic NHL franchise has moved since the 40s. The Leafs, Canadiens, Rangers, Bruins, Red Wings, Blackhhawks have all remained in their respective cities. Newer franchises with good history like the Blues, Flyers, Islanders, Sabres, Penguins, Canucks, Flames, and Oilers have never moved.

The NBA or NHL would be hurt if popular franchises with wide-support like the Lakers, Knicks, Celtics, Rangers, Bruins, or Red Wings moved. But, because of the lack of NFL-type revenue sharing, that's not going to happen. The local TV rights are too lucrative.

Steve Kerr was on Bill Simmons' podcast recently and he said he would sign Oden 'in a heartbeat' if he was still a GM. The odds are low but so would be the price - good bet. And at least you know he won't destroy the locker room and make a mess in the media like Iverson.

And it's not like the player taking up 13th roster spot is any good or getting any PT.

Absolutely. Of course, if we are talking a contract like the one Brandon Roy signed with the T-Wolves, it's maybe a different story. I'm assuming a minimal outlay with team options up the wazoo. A few bargain-basement players that outperform their contracts can really give a boost, like Blatche is doing, or even Sheed/Kurt Thomas/Camby in NY.

Then again, Eddy Curry barely played for the Heat despite seemingly being in shape so who knows.

It's a low risk/high reward move that I'd do 100/100 times if I was a GM, depending on the contract size.
