Either he's ready to play or not. I haven't understand any of this to be honest. If he's not going to play then they should have shut him down for the playoffs. What magical moment are they waiting for him where it suddenly makes sense to play or not.

Well, opinions are divided. The team's doctors have cleared him to play, months ago. As far as the organization is concerned, he can play....but he disagrees. Because he is their franchise, they are giving him slack. If this was Royce White, he'd have been sent to the D-League or cut by now. So it seems to be some sort of game of chicken going on. The organization could save Rose some face by shutting him down, but they are putting the onus on him to say he won't. So I think there is some political bullshit going on that we just don't know about - maybe he's salty about Asik, Korver etc being sent away or them not signing LeBron or something

I like Derrick Rose but I think he has handled this situation awfully. He seems to want to come back at 100% being the exact same player he was before the injury without any sort of building back up to it. Well if that is the case then shut it down and wait for the pre-season. Or communicate what is going on.

It's not his obligation to do so of course especially if the franchise isn't putting pressure on him to do so but this whole thing is just weird.

admittedly, these are ridiculous, arbitrary percentages but for the sake of argument:

let's assume he is at 90% of optimum right now

let's assume NO PLAYER in the playoffs is at 100% right now

let's assume that after playing hard for Thibs all of next season, he would be at about 90% again by the time the next playoffs started

So what does he gain by sitting out right now?

Didn't Adrian Peterson come back faster than this, playing a tougher position, and nearly shatter the Holy Grail of football records? I like and respect Rose but he should probably be more honest about this. In general I agree with Brand Knew: he's the franchise, this is his career, and I wouldn't risk that just to get bounced by the Heat either. Nor would I be doing stuff like this though:

It just looks bad, PR wise. I'm not gonna go all Skip Bayless and question his heart, everyone knows he's a competitor. But he could have handled this much better.

This was actually brought up by a columnist, and a sports physician explained that vertical jumps put waaaaay more stress on the knee than running and lateral movement.  So while he does seem to be goldbricking, you can't hold him to the Peterson standard (which no human other than Peterson himself has met, AFAIK).

Also, giving him a pass on what he does based on what "everyone knows" is precisely the Skip Bayless MO.

here's the crazy thing about Curry - he doesn't just extend the defense to the 3pt line, he forces it to extend to 28 FEET. The spacing it generates for everyone else is ridiculous, and even bad shooters can capitalize

Curious why Bogut wasn't the one throwing the ball in at the end. Seemed Warriors players couldn't see over the bigger Nuggets players to get the ball out.

I've never really understood the Knicks desire to pair those two together. You are so flirting with danger every second. Which is the same problem they had together with the Nuggets.

I'm not sure if Derrick Rose is legit still hurt... but I think at this point he could probably play, right?  And with the rest of his team as banged up as it is, his not playing kind of makes him look like a little bitch, right?  Or am I missing something here?

Nope. It's weird. He says he's not mentally ready but nobody will elaborate on what exactly that specifically entails.

Honestly I hope he doesn't come back against the Heat. If he doesn't I will just chalk it up to the idea that he probably shouldn't have played all season. Which I think most people would have been fine with going in. (Although why he's still activated I have no idea). If he does play against the Heat then I kinda lose a lot of respect for him. It's like I'm only willing to play if I can command the spotlight.

It's really all speculation. Some people think he's mad that the Bulls didn't aggressively pick up any free agents so why should go out there not at 100% percent when the bulls front office isn't trying 100%. This speculation is fueled by some tweets his brother made but its still pure speculation. There is some truth to the idea that the bulls probably wrote this season off early from the management side but Thibs is such a good coach he's going to get the best out of whatever he has.

Plus if he comes back he could destabilize the team's chemistry; they've gotten by with him all season/playoffs, it might take some time to get him back into to the speed of things.

Still when I look at banged up guys like Deng and Hinrich giving their all, trying to win...I can't help but lose respect for Rose. Even if I agree that him risking his career for one playoff series isn't worth it.

I think this is the big factor.  Neither Bulls management or DRose would say this out loud, but they're not really competing for a championship this year.  It's just the team is overachieving enough that they made it to the second round.

Rose might be at the point where he could physically come back, but he's being super cautious, which isn't insane after a knee injury.  Gilbert Arenas went from being a top-10 offensive player to being out of the league by rushing back (I'm glad Simmons cited this, so it's not just homers like me making the comparison) and the Bulls care a lot more about the next 4-10 years for Rose than this year.  I don't have a big problem with his decision but if Dwight had done this?  Or LeBron immediately post-Decision?  Skip Bayless would have gone from six to midnight.

Here is my take. I think the whole problem has been one of communication rather than Derrick Rose being willfully disrespectful or anything. I feel like there are right words to be said to defuse this situation from both his side and the bulls side but nobody is saying them for whatever reason.

And note this all based on the idea that we take Rose on his word. And that Rose has a reputation as a good guy and fierce competitor and not a knucklehead or anything.

Rose is 24. He is recovering from a major injury. The truth is there have been players who have come back from injuries too soon only to really damage themselves. And people need to knock it off with this Adrian Peterson stuff. Everybody is different. Because one athlete recovered from injury in one manner does not mean another athlete will do the same. That being thrown out is getting tiresome.

I don't know what Rose is feeling with his body. He says its mental but maybe its something related physically that he's just not articulate enough to put into words that is stopping him from getting there mentally.

The reality is even with Rose the Bulls are extremely unlikely to beat the heat. So if he says he not ready then why toss him out there in this environment when he's the entire franchise. Just wait.

That's the devil's advocate approach although I think there is at least some truth there. Personally I would have just shut him down for the playoffs. I don't understand if there is some riff between the bulls and him on this issue or that they didn't understand that the general public would not understand why a player who is activated on the roster isn't playing.
