The Lakers are now scrambling to create more cap space between now and the start of free agency. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, they are shopping the only players left on their roster not named LeBron or Kyle Kuzma — Mo Wagner, Isaac Bonga and Jemerrio Jones — in an effort to shed more salary. Wagner was their first-round pick last year and showed some promise as a rookie.
:dead

I hope no teams are going to fall for these obviously made up names.

Cutting the season to like 70 games has made good sense for awhile for a number of reasons. Fuck the records. Nobody cares about records for the NBA in that way.

I've never understood this idea of a mid-season cup that makes any kind of sense though. Everybody mentions soccer but culturally basketball has no tradition for such a thing. I don't understand why anyone would care without adding some cheesy gimmick to it like how baseball did their all star game game with home field advantage in the past.

Also not a fan of that play-in game for the playoffs spots. The college basketball situation is nothing like the pro basketball season situation so trying to gimmick your way into fake heat from it doesn't work to me.

Curious considering he won't play next season anyway. Why not take the money?

He will probably take the security of a long term deal. Especially now that he is injured. Teams will be willing to still give him a long term contract even with the injury so might as well take that security.

Yep, especially if he holds any sort of grudge with how it went down. I would lol.

I like Kemba to Celtics. Probably not enough to get them over Philly but good fit and they should be competitive. Predicting Kawhi leaves and Butler and Harris stay put, but we'll see. FA looking fun.

The Rockets going so hard after Butler seems insane. Especially since the Warriors might not be in their way at all this year.

Then you factor in that the testiness between Harden and Paul is simply rooted in that both feel more trusting in themselves having the ball, something that Butler's spent the last three years on three separate teams indicating he wouldn't help in the slightest.

The hell lineup is over, everybody's getting big again yet mobile. Seems absurd to dump somebody like Capela plus three other lineup guys (even if you can probably scrounge up slightly cheaper versions in the end) just to get another ball dominant wing.

The team just dumped Melo, MCW, James Ennis, Brandon Knight and Chriss, paying out first rounders to do it, at the deadline last year to get under the luxury tax. This would be dumping the other half of the roster and winding up facing the luxury tax! :lol

Alternatively, they could look to trade DeRozan (perhaps for a reunion with Dwane Casey in Detroit, for the expiring deals of Reggie Jackson and Langston Galloway plus young shooter Luke Kennard and two future first-round picks)

For what its worth if you can get Kawhi Leonard then get Kawhi Leonard. I still don't think that is likely but whatever go for it. If you land it you are set.

I'm not sure I think the other free agents are worth it except Klay who is almost certainly going to sign back for the Warriors (and is hurt anyway just like Durant). I would take that money and use it to fill out the rest of the rosters with a few more good players who aren't of that superstar stature.

Those three players together don't make sense to me.

They don't. An elite point guard would make more sense but I think Kawhi, Lebron, and Davis are so talented they would make it work anyway.

But instead of getting D Angelo or Kyrie and that being the team, I think you can get cheaper parts to fill out the team. But whatever. I'm happy no matter what. This is all win win for me. I had basically already set my mind to Lebron not having a real chance these last few years. The AD thing was a real surprise to me. So anything at this point is extra.

Cups are good to have a manageable competition with a much larger set of starting teams and in the traditional football association setup it's also an opportunity for all lower divisions and amateur clubs to compete in the same competition as the elite. It introduces the excitement of head to head win or lose competition that doesn't exist in championships. It can be a boon for small clubs and it serves some purpose in evangelizing the sport for the Federation (there's generally some political shenanigans as Federation and League can be at odds, Leagues have started organising competing cups with only pro clubs and such in recent years). It wouldn't make a lot of sense in the US sport setup and having a season + playoffs competition makes a cup redundant.

Kawhi Leonard will speak to the Los Angeles Lakers in the next few days and has made a personal request that only owner Jeanie Buss and Magic Johnson, the team's former president of basketball operations, be involved in the meeting, sources told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith.

Johnson told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne on Friday that he will help the Lakers in free agency in any way he can, but he said NBA rules do not permit him to be part of official team meetings with prospective free agents.

"A friend of mine called and says Kawhi wants to meet with you," Johnson told ESPN. "I said no problem. I'm available if that's what this man wants."

Despite all the barbs thrown at Magic he is the closest thing the Lakers have in that organization to someone who is respected by the players and is a Legend. So in that weird sense it makes sense.

The Portland Trail Blazers and Damian Lillard have agreed to a four-year, $196 million super maximum contract extension, sources confirmed to ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

The All-NBA guard will have a player option for $54.3 million in the last year of the extension, sources said.

Lillard, 28, has two years and around $61 million left on his current deal. The extension would keep him in Portland through the 2024-25 season.

Pretty fascinating off-season. A lot of good talent seems to be spread around now.

Not sure what to make of some of the stuff.

The 76ers are still very talented but they have a really big lineup which is the opposite of the direction a lot of the NBA is moving. Will be interesting to watch. Don't really understand why Jimmy Butler would want to head to Miami over them.

The Russell to Warriors move is also equal parts fascinating perplexing. I mean he is a very good young player. But I'm surprised another guard is the direction they went instead of a wing.

Warriors will unofficially retire #35.

Everything turning into massive multi-team sign-and-trade deals is great.
Quote
The Miami Heat completed a four-team trade that allows them to sign All-Star guard Jimmy Butler to a four-year, $142 million contract, league sources told ESPN on Monday.

The Heat are sending center Hassan Whiteside to the Portland Trail Blazers, guard Josh Richardson to the Philadelphia 76ers and a protected 2023 first-round pick to the Los Angeles Clippers to secure the salary cap flexibility to complete the sign-and-trade deal with the 76ers, league sources tell ESPN.

The Blazers acquired Whiteside for forwards Meyers Leonard and Maurice Harkless in the trade, sources said. Harkless and his $11 million expiring contract are headed to the Clippers in the deal, which is the reason the Clippers were able to extract the protected 2023 first-round pick.

...

The Dallas Mavericks had interest in acquiring Heat guard Goran Dragic in a previous, three-team construction of the Butler sign-and-trade, however, they "changed course" Dragic's agent, Bill Duffy, told ESPN.

"In analyzing it, his salary was too high based on other things they're trying to do," Duffy told ESPN.

Apparently the Lakers have lost like 80% of the role players they were targeting while holding their space open for Kawhi. :american

It's a big lineup, but it's actually more flexible, switchy and more in line with the pass-3P-happy direction of the NBA than the Sixers were. Horford and Josh Richardson can play more spots, and fit more schemes, than Redick and Butler did.

Now when Embiid sits they can "go small" by playing a guy who has played center for most of his career along with two other 6-10 guys lol.

This New York offseason reminds me of Sacramento's moves in the summer of 2017, when Knicks GM Scott Perry was briefly part of the Kings' front office before getting promoted to his current job. Like New York, Sacramento spent lavishly on veterans to put around a noncompetitive young core. George Hill got the three-year deal ($57 million with just $40 million guaranteed) while Zach Randolph got a two-year, $24 million deal and Vince Carter a one-year contract worth $8 million.
