It's not like The Tyrant hasn't been done by Arabs before.
My extended family used to watch a dozen shows just like that when I visited them (sans the GoT-style influence in terms of sex & violence).

It just happens to be produced in the West now.

Examples?

No clue, I don't speak arabic and can't for the life of me recall the specifics of the stuff. That's just the impression I got from the translations provided to me by relatives (this son is from america, he doesn't want to marry her, his twin got the russian mob behind him, etc.)

RECTIFY

Man, Ted Jr and Tawny may be the best dysfunctional marriage on TV right now. Tawny's sexual repression and savior fantasy and Ted Jr's total "B-Hole" ness and complete lack of self worth are a match made in OkCupid heaven.

Also, "Well I don't remember in hindsight!  .........really?"

I like that Ted Jr. finally had the balls to admit what happened to him. It may not have been rape, but it was a very weird sexual assault. I like how he cleverly hides the fact that he provoked Daniel to do it.

Lots of shows coming on tonight:

The Strain
Season Premiere of Ray Donovan
Season Premiere of Masters of Sex
The Leftovers
True Blood

Kinda hype for The Strain. But seeing Corey Stoll with hair is  :heh

I love Del Toro, but The Strain falls into one of my least favorite genres. Never been big on "Infection Spreads!!!" type deals other than maybe Contagion and Zombie movies.

So basically, all of them.

MTV looking for that sweet sweet GoT fantasy money

http://variety.com/2014/tv/news/shannara-fantasy-drama-lands-series-order-from-mtv-1201261125/

MTV has given a 10-episode order to “Shannara” in the hopes of building its own “Lord of the Rings”-like fantasy franchise out of the book series by Terry Brooks.

Feature helmer Jonathan Liebesman has signed on to direct the first two hours of the series, to be shepherded by showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough for Sonar Entertainment.

Millar and Gough have deep experience in the genre through their long run on WB/CW’s “Smallville.” Millar and Gough exec produce with Liebesman, Brooks, Dan Farah and Jon Favreau. Favreau had been attached to direct the project but has bowed out due to scheduling conflicts.

The “Shannara” novels, which Brooks began writing in the late 1970s, have bounced around Hollywood in film and TV development for years. MTV’s plan is to start the series with the second novel in the 17-book series, “The Elfstones of Shannara.” Series will feature a strong female lead in the story of a family with magical powers in a post-apocalyptic world.

Liebesman’s pic credits include “Battle Los Angeles,” “Wrath of the Titans” and the upcoming reboot of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” He’s managed by David Gardner of Principato-Young.

Quote
The series blends magic and primitive technology and the books are set in the Four Lands which in some books is identified as Earth long after civilization as we know it was destroyed in a chemical and nuclear holocaust called the Great Wars. By the time of the prequel First King of Shannara, the world has now reverted to a medieval state and magic has re-emerged to supplement science as humans and other races live in a place known as the Four Lands, which is a future North America.

Reading up on it on Wikipedia, it sounds incredibly generic  :-\

I finished rewatching The Wire and man, Season 5 is a legitimately bad season.  Not bad in comparison to the other seasons of The Wire, I mean it's a bad season of television in general.  Reminds me a lot of the last couple seasons of Dexter in terms of train wreck value.

I'll have to watch it again but I don't remember having that reaction at all. I thought much of it was ok, mixed with lots of heavy handed shit that didn't work.

The final episode was really good though.

This weeks The Leftovers :lawd Dat Walkabout-tier episode.

I don't think this season of Rectify is hitting me like the first one did. Maybe watching the first season in two sittings kept my enthusiasm high but I just don't feel like a second season has been justified so far, despite how much I love seeing the characters like Daniel and Tawny again.

Boardwalk Empire is cool, but I had to stop watching at the beginning of the third season because I hate Margaret so much. The second season takes her in such a stupid soap opera direction and I grew to dislike her presence.

I enjoyed Brotherhood when I watched it during its original airing. :hipster Had a lot of heavy betrayal between people close to each other.

Just kind of a male-centric show IIRC.

The recent Rectify episode started off a little slow for me. Don't really care for Amantha's job story much. Once it got to the curiosity shop and Lezlie, things picked up. And the party scene was damned good.

You have to place ted jrs and amanthas story in contrast to Daniels. As he finds that he can integrate back into the town be grew up in, the other two find themselves further pushed out. I think both of those arcs could go very interesting places by seasons end. Gotta remember that like season one it took 2/3rds of the season for all the arcs to converge. Same is happening this season I feel

I agree that Ted Jr is being pushed out, but I feel Amantha's story is just that she has no concept of life without Daniel on Death Row. So now she's going to have to be pulled into something new. I have just never liked Wile E Coyote cartoons, so seeing Ted Jr set up for doom doesn't work for me or seeing Amantha about to flub at her job. I think Ted Jr and the actor have been great. I just hate dramatic irony of that sort in fiction.

S3 was quite a return to form and permanently resolved the weakest link of the show. The one thing that bothers me is that

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Carrie is still the main character. There's no fucking way someone with known mental issues would be made station chief in the CIA. I realize the show isn't 100% realistic regardless, but her presence makes it ridiculous. I'd rather have Quinn in charge, Saul as his mentor, and Carrie being used as an outside asset of some type.

The last head of the CIA thought he could communicate with his paramour by saving drafts in a webmail account they both had access to.

Our intelligence services have been familiar with this tactic for awhile, I guess it was once popular with the various violent non-state actors across the globe.

I know a rezident isn't a publicly appointed position like CIA director, but just sayin'.
