I've gotten addicted to the last ship.

It's terrible. Absolutely terrible. But I love it because it feels like I'm watching mst3k.

The show is like somebody took Ron Moore's Battlestar Galactica. Removed every bit of nuance and complexity that show aspired to. And mixed it with a bunch of pro-american horseshit and put it out there. It's so bad it crosses over into being hilarious to watch. All I do is crack wise and eyeroll during an entire episode.

@Exodust SoulBurn -  Bored to death is solid. Ya forgot bout galifinakis, unless ya didnt.. lol  I seen him in an old school show, called Boston common. Good show. Has the yes dear male lead. Ted danson is awesome in BTD!

@Karakand - S2 ending knocked me on my ass too. Show continues top deliver, the ending to this last season better than 2. If ya can believe that!

I honestly think the show got way better without him on it. Season 3 is probably gonna end up being the best season of the show unless they pull something out their hat for this last one. 4 was solid but I didn't care for how it ended.

I've only seen S1, but obviously was spoiled about the ending of S2; it was nigh impossible to avoid, like Game of Thrones spoilers. Didn't really like S1; it started good but I lost interest in the middle episodes, and even the good ending couldn't get me back. IMO there just aren't any characters interesting enough to sell me. I really liked Capone though but everyone else...eh.

And I just don't buy Steve Buscemi in the lead role. Everytime I see him I can't help but think fuck, Alec Baldwin was literally supposed to get this part...

I like Jimmy. He and Richard create some space for war semi-real talk, and it's :tocry that he feels like he's got nothing more to offer the world than being a killer after serving in World War I.

His unraveling throughout season 2 was... hard to really understand at times, but the deck was stacked against him (I lol'd irl at him reading Jacobean theatre), and his senselessness is I guess a personalization of the senselessness of World War I and Prohibition.

As for the rumors described in the spoilers, I can kind of see it with how hurried the megatons were dropped about his past in the final episodes, but really he was unraveling from the beginning of the show. Like he said, he died in the trenches.

Wish Angela got a better run, underutilized character imo.

Bored To Death

A pretty good and very entertaining comedy about a guy who can't seem to write his second novel so he tries to advertise himself as a private detective on craigslist.

Ted Danson is the best part by miles. As the old guy who's always looking for fun and excitement. He's like a stoned Sam Malone with more money, so I of course I was going to enjoy this character.

Makes me want to check out Jonathen Ames' books. Wonder if those are worth reading.
I think the second season was the peak, and it was a near god-tier one at times.

Finally started the ultimate season of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Season 7 ended so utterly perfectly, and the opening episode of 8 felt too much like an extended epilogue to s7's ending. It was structurally not as sound as anything in s7, but still funny as hell.

Crossbones season pass was $10 so I bit. Scenery is pretty, Malkovich is pretty great, and the brit lead who plays the spy is kind of charming/smarmy. I've seen two eps so far; the writing is crap. The dialog is sometimes clever, but the plots are just disjointed and nonsensical, with huge gouts of exposition mouthed between unlikely characters instead of letting things be teased out or sussed by viewers. So many things make so little sense.

30 seconds of Google reveals that NBC has already canceled the show, so the cheap price was probably a quick try to make some last-minute money before it bows out. Sad, really.  :'(

Black Sails takes a bit over half its initial season to start picking up steam, but the latter half of that show is awesome. The final episode, in particular, has some of the best ship-to-ship battling you'll find.

as for H&CF: It doesn't make its genuine moments work, the dialogue is sappy and cliched, and Lee Pace is left in the dust with a character that doesn't work very well. I won't be sad to see it be passed over for a second season.

Just starting S3. Rosetti's been onscreen for less than two minutes and I already can't wait to see him die. Gonna be hard to top that.

Margaret's my least favorite character. I know the flip-flop between pious indignation and knowing conspirator is supposed to indicate inner turmoil, but the way it comes off is that no one knows how to write her as a consistent character.

Fucking hated how he went out. Hated Hated Hated. I was prayings and begging that they would let him just get out and integrate however mishapenly back into civillian life but nope. I think that would have been a braver ending for the character. His death and Knucky's assistant "Eddie's" are the  first deaths on the show since Darmody's wife that mad me go "wow i guess life is just all bullshit until the very end huh."

I know it probably wasn't for everyone and I tend to hate those side tangentially involved stories but I absolute adored what they did with Jimmy's mother this season.

http://lovecraftzine.com/2014/08/04/did-the-writer-of-true-detective-plagiarize-thomas-ligotti-and-others/

well that would explain why True Detective reminded me so much of Thomas Ligotti
that article seems pretty biased. The showrunner was on record multiple times citing Ligotti as a direct influence, whereas the article suggests he only mentioned Ligotti when prompted.

oh i'm not saying that there's annnnnny merit to the "plagiarism" accusation, but it's similar enough that it accounts for why I felt like I got huge Ligotti vibes from the show.
