Console launch numbers:

Quote
Wii > PS2 > Wii U > 360 > PS3~=GC~=XBOX

So, not terrible, but it also isn't a good sign that it can be found on shelves in places.

3DS is crashing and burning, fuck. Give us actual good hardware design/3DS Lite, Nintendo!

Every single one of the consoles Wii U outsold was sold out on launch day. The only one I can't say that about for sure is the original XBox.

Who cares, we're talking about sales. Nintendo overshipped, but the bottom line is what counts in this discussion. With a sufficient amount of stock, any console might not have sold out.

And yet a severely supply-constrained Wii, successor to the hapless Gamecube, pulled in 50% more sales.

Not that it really matters what the Wii U does during its launch, it'll be the next few months and the next year that tell the tale.

The point is that every one of those consoles would have sold more if available, making Wii U's "victory" over them pretty meaningless. It would probably be dead last if not for availability issues.

The original > chain, if it was meant to prove a point about Wii U's popularity, was already fantasy land. It was a meaningless indicator that was not apples to apples.

With Wii U's plentiful on store shelves, I think it is appropriate in a sales thread to say that the Wii U will fall behind these consoles it "beat" in your pointless comparison in short order. Which is the point I was making.

I'm not sure, depending on how high the cost is plus how supply constrained it is, it could do worse. Wouldn't really mean anything though.

I think MS has built up a dedicated fan base of 6-8 million people that will instabuy whatever they release.

Kinect was proof of that.

Kinect was Wii 2: Electric Boogaloo. Those casuals are not going to buy a whole new system at launch, especially if it's expensive.

I know Xbox 360 had huge shortages that lasted for several months and while demand was high, it had more to do with Microsoft barely putting any out (most of which were RRODs I'm sure) than extremely high demand.  It was so bad I bought a Japanese unit (which there were plenty of, lol) and played Asian versions of games that had English text.  I remember PS2 being bad for quite some time as well.  I remember you couldn't get one for well into 2001.

I think Wii U will do fine.  I'm glad that you can find some on the shelves because fuck the flippers.  Those twats snapped up all of the online preorders because they were hoping they could flip one for $800+.  I think that did give the impression that Wii U was going to do gangbusters.  February 2013 on will be the real test.  January is still going to have the people who can't find one for Christmas try to get one when the holiday season is over.  I'm sure Nintendo charged $300-350 because they know that a PS4/Durango SKU will be $300-350 so Nintendo is trying to make as much fast cash as they can.  If you don't want a Wii U that bad, Nintendo will probably drop it by $50-100 for next Fall.  Maybe rather than play NSMBU over and over, there might be two or three other games worth owning released for the first few months of the Wii U.

I don't know what to say about 3DS.  I guess the iOS market has taken such a huge bite out of the portable market that the 3DS is struggling.  Nintendo might have to get off their asses and make some more compelling content in the vein of 3D Land instead of NSMB2.

MS is THE company when it comes to online gaming on consoles. Xbox had Halo, 360 had Gears and I bet as we speak MS is making some killer must have app that will sway the dudebro casual and hardcore online community to buy the next xbox as soon as it hits.

As far as I know, this next generation is Microsoft's to win.  Sony is so incompetent these days that I find it hard to believe they can snap back into reality just in time for the PS4.  Nintendo is going to take a long ass time fixing their numerous problems and only because they feel coerced to; they were willing to march into failure until Capcom pressed for them to drop the price of the 3DS.  Microsoft has the strongest online network that looks to only become stronger if Windows 8 means anything.  Given the $1 billion+ clusterfuck known as RROD, I could see reliability being a high priority as well.

you know - the Wii U is expensive to most people as well - including casuals. This is like a rerun of the 3DS/Vita argument which went :

1) 3DS is $249 so the Vita is going to be $399 ! lol
2) Oh the Vita is going to be $249 as well? Oh wow
3) Lol , the 3DS is now $150 - Lol at the price of the Vita lol. So overpriced.

The look on peoples faces when MS release the machine at $350 but, then, we know the Wii U will dump down to $199 then it'll be "sheesh, X720... so expensive #fingerwag"

You realize if this analogy holds true the Wii U will be beating the other consoles' asses with a paddle, right? :lol

Of course Wii U is expensive for casuals, I never said it wasn't. Talking purely about the other launches. Who knows if they'll be higher or lower than Wii U's, I don't think they will be, and it'll have nothing to do with the demand or quality of either console.

I just checked the internal data for our Black Friday numbers* and wanted to let you know that over the Holiday weekend:

Xbox 360 sold more than 750,000 consoles in the U.S. alone –exceeding internal forecasts.
Three month Xbox LIVE Gold Subscription sales increased more than 50 percent compared to last year’s Black Friday week.
We saw incredible activity on Xbox over the weekend. For example, on Sunday alone we had more than 14 million people on Xbox LIVE across the world, racking up more than 72 million hours of use in just one day.
Compared to 2011, we’ve seen a 43 percent increase in U.S. entertainment application hours logged on Xbox LIVE during the week of Black Friday.

* Sunday, Nov. 18 – Friday, Nov. 23

Lower than last year(960k) but still impressive. Not sure what was the exact coverage period last year though.

If the next MS box comes out in 2013 I'll buy that sight unseen over any other console. If they wait until 2014 fuck them. I'll just buy the next Playstation system and that's it. It's way past time for a real new console and the Wii U doesn't count.

As for PS4,latest batch of rumors strongly point at 2013 release...near final dev kits in January, final devkits around E3,devs having production milestones in August

PS3 holiday lineup is a bit slim too,I bet PS4 will have a pretty strong launch lineup.

I have heard nothing of the upcoming Model 2 collection coming to steam. Steam doesn't even have stuff like xplosian man or woman. Yeah, I think I will keep going xbox unless people start putting this shit on PC.it sucks because ideally I only want PC.

yeah, the 2012 holiday lineup is so bad that Sony didn't waste money advertising it! Microsoft had one huge game with Halo 4 and the 360 is still the place where people buy multiplatform games.  Everything has been pushed or initially scheduled for first half 2013.

Gen has gone on so long that all these publishers are spent.  I remember after the 360 released you still had big games coming for the PS2/Xbox.  I'd imagine most have been prepping for next gen for some time now.  Also remember when the E3 shows leading up to this gen where Microsoft showed off Mass Effect, Splinter Cell Hobo, and Too Human.  Sony first showed off Infamous, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Resistance, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Motorstorm, and Killzone 2.  What's funny is that now there is more or less parity of third party support.

Media Create Sales: Week 47, 2012 (Nov 19 - Nov 25)

In contrast to America, 3DS up YoY to no one's surprise and should surpass PS3 LTD in the next week or two. Vita has pulled itself out of the quadruple digits. Edit- Oops, that was the PSP, my bad. :lol Vita remains in the quadruple digits. Japanese want Pokemon games for 3DS. EX Troopers 3DS kinda bombed, and EX Troopers for PS3 super bombed. AC 3DS still dominating. Bravely Default probably topping out around 270k, which ain't bad.

News at 11.

Based off the sales of Mystery Dungeon 3DS, they don't actually. Or maybe they want the real ones, as that's the worst debut for a Mystery Dungeon game ever.
