Also 3DS best selling for December and all of 2013, called it. Pokemon would deffo be in NPDs if the versions were combined, I reckon...

Nintendo Cuts Forecasts to Loss of 25B Yen From 55B Yen Profit

Quote
In the year-end sales season which constitutes the highest proportion of the annual sales volume, software sales
with a relatively high margin were significantly lower than our original forecasts mainly due to the fact that
hardware sales did not reach their expected level. As a result, the total of selling, general and administrative
expenses will surpass gross profit, which leads to an operating loss.
The reason why we will post ordinary income despite the operating loss situation is that we now assume that
the yen will be weaker than our original assumptions at the beginning of the fiscal year, which results in foreign
exchange gains.
On the other hand, we expect to post a net loss because we need to reverse deferred tax assets in relation to the
losses carried over from the previous fiscal years mainly in the United States, as we can no longer expect our
financial performance to recover in the current fiscal year.
Exchange rate assumptions for the fourth financial quarter as well as for the end of the full fiscal year have
been revised from 90 yen to 100 yen per U.S. dollar, and from 120 yen to 140 yen per euro in consideration of
the recent exchange rate situation

Nintendo expects 2.8 million Wii-U sales down from 9 million.
Nintendo expects 13.5 million 3DS sales down from 19.5 million.

I'll be interested in the long term effects. Will this be enough to spur them to actually try to change anything significantly to improve things for the future. I mean real actual change and not just another band-aid.  Because the current future prospects and trajectory are not looking good.

We'll I'd agree because they would have already done it, but forecasts like that and their bleak console outlook and the tough competition they will increasingly face on the handheld side should be scary enough for them to be open to a different approach. I mean this whole Wii U debacle everybody and his brother saw from a mile away.

I still feel blue for not buying the dc, but sega lost credit with me after the saturn which was my first 32 bit system.

Sure it was great, but it really had too little support and it was impossible to find games in Holland for it as shops dropped it.

Sega Rally is probably the pinnacle of the arcade racing game genre, Daytona (CCE) was no slouch either.

Remember playing those tracks to DEATH to improve my times.

I don't want to sound like a nostalgia tard, but 32 bit gen is my favourite, not that I would want to play those games now though. Although I do live the online aspect we got in the 128 bit gen and that matured now (and was on PC already since 2000).

Part of me wonders why they deliberately left it this late to revise down HW sale expectations, I don't believe for a minute that they really thought Christmas through March would bring them 6m+ sales. Maybe they did but I dunno. The cynic / conspiracy theorist in me says they never did really want to spend the money required (this financial year) to turn Wii U around, they took a bath on 3DS just last year. Its never really had proper advertising in the sense that former consoles have, they seemed to care more about 3DS (which I imagine brings in more profit long term, providing they can continue to boost that business)... My gut is starting to say that they've seen a buyback or something down the road (Yamauchi family shares?), wanted to change strategy anyway, and are using bad results to deliberately drive the price down and justify some seismic change.

One area where I think they've really fucked up in the last year is just assuming their old retail partners would want to keep carrying their stuff. Its one thing to think you can do without the likes of EA (crazy in itself), but its quite another to expect shops to sit on shit-loads of inventory and not reduce your shelf-space to a square metre. I think NCL is really too far removed from what's going on in Europe too. They are disappearing from the UK retail scene completely, and there is no way online shops or digital sales can pick up the slack.

If this forces some diversification and some inventive new ideas from them, all the better we'll be for it.

Nintendo's solution: MOAR MARIO

I said in a different thread elsewhere but if you love Mario, the Wii U is going to be the system for you.  At least that means we might be more likely to get Galaxy 3.  I wouldn't be too shocked if we get Sunshine HD and Mario 64 HD.  The latter sold 10 million on DS, they can probably rope 2-3 million people to get a HD release of the game.

pff, my prediction entails nintendo moving to a market with cheaper games with low budget and iterative sequels making tons of cash.

your way requires them to understand the overseas market and make HD games that can run on a variety of configurations and have proper internet functionality.

i'm betting on oscar here.

I never said that's what they would do, it's what I'd like them to do.

Damn, Ps4 is still the best selling nextgen console in the NA. Even being severely supply constrained.

January should be terrible for MS. The demand isn't there anymore and we should expect a lot of returned Xbox U consoles from burned scalpers.

MS should reduce the price asap.

Dremacast is Sega's best console with its best first party games. Saturn is great, but most of its library requires imports. That single handedly cripples it and takes it down a few notches. Saturn is above Genesis however. The problem with DC is that every game on the system aside from a very short list were ported. Thus making it have little value these days. Saturn has much more value in 2014.

The Dreamcast has better 1st party titles, but Saturn has some killer 1st party and is godly for the amount of 3rd party games.

Also, importing is easy and should not discredit the system.

I think the better first party titles puts it ahead the third party titles. That said, Saturn does have great third party. But I prefer the first party of the DC.

And I don't think Importing discredits Saturn, but like, you're talking about hardware, and the person admits that you need to import from another country to get the full experience, it kind of takes away from the argument, no? I can't think of any other system where people say,"_____ is best _____, but only if you import." Gauging hardware just doesn't work like that and Saturn is the lone exception. Other systems stand on their own merits of localized software. Basically, importing should ENHANCE a systems library. It shouldn't be required to actually enjoy it.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - 93K (Wii U)
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - 224K (3DS)

MH3U sold 317,000 copies in America this year. Considering that doesn't count digital, I don't think that's too bad. It's probably slightly less than half of Tri's US LTD, although I don't know if it got there on strong legs or what.

Then again, Ultimate is on two systems while Tri wasn't, which is a knock against the sales. I'm not sure it would have sold better on any other combination of two systems, though.
