Oh guess I should clarify a bit. I'm not Sales-AGE or anything like that, I never even posted on GAF like my intro post here stated. I've got no special access or analytic tools for any numbers, only what the news outlets post. I don't track or make predictions, I'm not invested at all tbh.

I do like to see the discussions around sales though, so if I can help facilitate that by copy-pasting some charts and numbers every now and again without stepping on toes, I totally will. :D

Man, as a Ninthing sales-age during the Wii/DS era was a blast. Afterwards I only ever lurked in the sales threads.

Still, keeping an eye on the numbers is always a good idea, methinks. So, I'm gonna continue lurking here if y'all don't mind. Pray that  I won't become more active, because I'm pretty sure I was an obnoxious sales-ager.

Also: I am thoroughly spoiled by the stats and comparisons to previous weeks/franchise entries/etc on GAF. Being spoon-fed conclusions was nice.

I don't think anyone here particularly cares about sales too much Eteric. Oscar did, but it's been a bit of a dead thread since he left.

I lurked the Media Create threads on GAF, not really one to post or get into arguments over sales, but I always liked to see what was trending in Japan and such.

Doing really well. Hard to "win" against systems that have been out so long, though. :)

Lately Nintendo Switch is always on top, but if you combine PS4+Pro sales you'll notice that often times the PS4 family is still king.

It goes back and forth depending on the software releases. PS4 technically "won" this week because of the new games for example. Switch is going to dominate for the next month+ on the back of Mario I think?

The stories what come out of Japan though for people trying to get Switches? Wowie. You got the raffles, the Yakuza scalpers, huge lines etc...

Developers have already thrown into the PS4 pot, so you won't get dominant Switch support from 3rd parties. Probably more multi-plat releases and the occasional exclusive like SMT. They still haven't announced a release date for DQ11 and are awfully quiet about it.

They aren't even remotely competing in the same space for the same crowd. Switch is a hybrid with a completely different set of expectations that comes with being both a console and a handheld. As I hypothesized, support that Nintendo had for 3ds would transfer over to the Switch.

I said that I don't see 3rd party support jumping ship completely and I can't justify buying a Switch because I don't have time for the games I already have. Those were totally separate statements and you seem to have read into it and/or took it personally or something.

Everybody and their cousins are playing MarO, but I instead bought Snake Pass at 50% off. I feel like such a rebel right now. :smug

Anyway. Those are some solid MariO numbers. 125k switches ain't too shabby either. So, I'm guessing that's all they have for switch consoles in the big ol' stockpile for the foreseeable future? Gotta suck to have so much demand and being unable to deliver, while simultaneously squandering the goodwill of your consumers and hopefuls.

In just five days, the new Super Mario Odyssey video game for the Nintendo Switch system sold more than 1.1 million units in the U.S. alone. That makes it the fastest-selling Super Mario game ever in the U.S., surpassing the New Super Mario Bros. Wii game

I am a bit shocked it is selling faster than NSMB in the US. It suggests a really high attach rate.

I really hope Nintendo makes good on the early success of the system.

Nintendo gets complacent very fast.  BOTW and Odyssey was as good as it was because Nintendo was pretty desperate.  Now that Switch is selling like gangbusters, I'm dreading the inevitable Wii Music era of Nintendo where they just get by doing as little as possible.  I'd like to be wrong but this seems to be their MO for the past couple of generations.

Not gonna happen. Iwata retired (bitch) and Kimishima is a hardcore businessman with Yakuza ties. He reminds me lot of BASED Yamauchi.

I think that they will keep re-iterating on this brilliant hybrid concept with better hardware each generation (see nvidia's statement about long time partnership).

I am still wondering what brainfart made them go with the whole "chat via smartphone app" approach. I mean, it's not even using the Bluetooth connectivity. Just how far up your own arse do you have to be to even consider that squid attachment thing with its cable-only hookups. If that's a business or Yakuza decision, then I want Iwata back. :maf

...

I'm more concerned whether Nintendo can finally grab some consistent third party support this time around. Vita dying with more or less opportune timing will help at least in regard to the niche/deplorables segments, but they will have to work hard to whittle away the established communities and fanbase commitments to existing competing platforms.

I mean, I'm happy with my Doom (etc) showcase pieces, but unless that translates into prolonged support and a thriving and profitable market for third parties is the question.
Basically, I'm fearing the Wii scenario of test games, Nintendo franchise clones, Babiez shovelware and loads of bankrupt or fired "hardcore" Devs whose games sell three copies each because the fans for those kinds of games just aren't on the platform and have little incentive to leave their current feeding grounds. The situation is eerily similar, with the exception of the Vita users being up for grabs this time around.

Well, I'll be happy with even a Wii scenario because I'm all about slobbering that delicious Nintendo knob, but still. Look at how wretchedly the Wii died. I'd like to see switch fade out (when its time comes) without such humiliation.

We're already seeing better 3rd party support than we've seen on a Nintendo console in a long time. Sure, there are some stinkers like Crapcom but Switch has completely different demographics than Wii. It has a gimmick that is actually very good and resonates with 'gamers" unlike Wii and WiiU.

As for turd party, Nintendo makes their consoles for their strong selection of 1st party IPs unlike MS/Sony with 3rd party so I've accepted that Nintendo consoles will never have 3rd party support on par.

All successful consoles get shovelware.

I agree about the voice chat thing, utterly stupid and very Nintendo-like.

Yeah, I'm honestly surprised by that. Outside of INDIEZZZZZZZzzzzzz, it's actually getting some more ports. But we'll see how long that lasts. Wii U got some early 360 era ports and then nose-dived after those bomb'd.

Yup, the initial outpouring of support is not the problem.

Wii launched with quite a few big name brands as well, and for the first two years or so coasted along quite nicely. Sure, quality was hit or miss, but third parties at worst made solidly average efforts to cash in. After sales either didn't pick up or actually declined, third parties were out of there faster than you could say "the unprecedented partnership with EA on WiiU will fix what went wrong with the Wii!".  ::)

I'm still sore that Boom Blox went bust. Or Blast Works with its cool Nintendo network integration. Or the last ditch attempt from Hudson to save their hides by releasing competent rereleases of older games on Wiiware. Red Steel was a good effort as well. Started out massively overhyped and was shunned when it actually released a good sequel. Heck, while The Conduit might never be anything more than a B tier franchise, it was still an honest effort. On another console with an active shooter fanbase it would have skimmed off a few unlucky lambs with well meaning grandmas or fifteen year olds with too much lunch money, but nobody who was still left on Wii had any interest in those kinds of games, much less middling ones. Or how about the FFCC franchise, which pretty much died on Wii.

Sigh.

I don't have enough time to play my PS4, so getting another system makes no sense. I'm sure the new Mario is fun.

I didnt have time to play on ps4 either, but somehow with the switch i sneak in an hour here or there...

DKC Returns, Galaxy 2, Excitebots, Punch-Out, Sin and Punishment 2, and Xenoblade came out after Wii Music. There were also pretty great third party titles too, which is usually the best part of a Nintendo console that's successful out of the gate. Though I don't dig the lag time where third-parties have to ramp up because they had no faith. Between the id and indie stuff though, Switch seems to be doing well in that regard.

That said, that time also included Other M and Skyward Sword, so point taken.

Sigh.

The Conduit did well considering it was a pretty shitty game (whose claim to fame was "looks good for a Wii game" in an era where 360 and PS3 were a thing), it got a sequel after all.

FFCC died because Square took what people loved about the series (multiplayer) and jettisoned it out the window in favor of a linear, story-based, single-player minigame-laden wagglefest. The two WiiWare games (My Life as a King/Darklord) actually sold very well IIRC despite also being departures from the series formula.

FFCC is a sore spot for me because they had gotten really close to perfecting it with Echoes of Time. It was a linear, story-based game that felt like Final Fantasy, while also being a multiplayer, online-capable, custom character loot-fest. It was fun as fuck and deserved a far better online community than the DS could give it (something Square even realized when they ported it to the Wii... unfortunately with little effort, literally reusing DS assets on the big screen.)
