Man oh man. I kinda liked season 4 of Arrested Development when it first came out, but I just rewatched the whole series and it's so much worse if you're coming fresh off the show's original run. I'm not even just talking about the new non-linear format. The writing's just all around less snappy. It really likes to establish one joke and just linger on it. Also, I get that the characters are meant to be at their lowest now that the family is fragmented, but some of the storylines are just too dark. I love dark comedy, but it's just such a jarring shift in tone. Like, Tobias' character went from being comedicaly tragic to just uncomfortably tragic.  They've always been scummy people, but a lot of the humor came from them almost never being held accountable for their behavior. It all just feels like a different, much less funny show.

Everything about season 4 is less snappy. It's like a darker more morose version of AD. Which can be funny at time but doesn't really feel like what I originally loved about the show.

Didn't have time to watch Mr Robot last night but I want to point something out: it's incredibly well put together. Every episode starts with a striking scene, and ends with one as well. The last ep I saw

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Starts with the drug dealer realizing Elliot set him up. Him pacing back and forth, the sudden moment of realization...mixed with great camera framework and ominous music was perfect. Likewise the end when Elliot's friend goes for a run after learning her father is deeply in debt, then reaches a cross roads...whew.

Made it ten minutes into Baskets before I had to turn it off. I seriously can't imagine the thought process behind writing a scene as obnoxious as the drive thru scene here, let alone putting it early in the first episode.

Kind of ruins it knowing that actor is also into helping kids

Lucifer is actually pretty amusing.  :lol

It kinda fits the initial vibe of the comic (Lucifier dicking around on Earth having a good time annoying humans and being amused by them) before it got into larger universal and religious matters and ditched all that.

EDIT: It's also a bit of a salve on the wound that is Constantine. Does some of the same gimmicks like the freezing/slowing of time to indicate an angel arriving. Similar relationship there too. Oh, and sarcastic British lead.

After watching the latest season of It's Always Sunny available on Netflix I gotta give them props for still delivering a funny program on a mostly consistent basis. Maybe it's not as great as the peak seasons, but most tv shows would have gone to shit halfway to this point. Even most of my favorite tv comedies have gone sour five or so seasons in.

Got sucked into watching some episodes of The Following (Kevin Bacon) with my wife on Netflix.

Wow, what shit sandwich of a show.

Whatever good there is (and there is some) is completely undone by the plausibility of it. So many bizarre choices they made with the storyline,  hard to believe people stuck around for multiple seasons of it.

Didn't realize Forever was from just last season. Had a nice hook for a procedural. And I liked the refusal to really name the series arc villain. Guess it got axed because ABC didn't own it more than ratings.

Better Call Saul S2 coming soon on Netflix.

Kind of curious to see what they'll do, honestly the ending of S1 was self contained and pretty definitive so... a bit wary of the story topping overdose, but we'll see.

I don't have time to read all that right now but it seems to mirror my views. I thought the show started great, amazing even. But it began unraveling once the father/sister twist was revealed. I really liked that episode and was hesitant about how the show would handle it. Further adding on that Mr. Robot doesn't truly exist was too much. Speaking of which I want to rewatch the first half of the season just to see if it works in hindsight.

Not saying the show got bad. But it just went from being amazing to being good, I guess. Dunno about the finale either. I definitely can't wait for S2 though.

Didn't notice he was pretty young until after he sort've sold me on the character (caveat haven't read the books). Just thought the show was fuckin' well produced and best thing since Battlestar Galactica. Actually think this is already better and loved BG - and following that train of thought BG was the best thing since when? Mind you haven't watched Babylon 5 yet but only because I couldn't get through the first season.

...

Hyperion might still be near unfilmable. Don't know if Dan Simmons is involved and have mixed feeling about that, in his personal posting/writings 10 years he's degenerated into a reactionary feeble-minded cunt, although real-talk The Terror was dooope.

Edit: whoops, changed 15 years to 10 years to not exclude Ilium/Olympos, which are Hyperion tier, although even on the later you could see him getting succumbing to muslimphobia.

The books are good, or at least the first couple are. I haven't read the rest. They're written by two guys who used to collab/work with GRRM.

I avoided the show because I assumed it was SyFy cheesy but apparently it's good.

Speaking of cheese, I had the misfortune of watching Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments' pilot episode this morning. I know, I know, it's YA fiction and/or vampire angelic boyfriend extruded fantasy product, and the movie was already complete shit, but I was doing dishes so whatever. The pilot has galvanized me against ever needing to give a crap about it again. Fumbling, awkward, sub-soap-opera acting and sub-George-Lucas dialog. Perhaps most annoying is that the show has a heroine who is constantly being saved by a "nice-guy" who asks her, "What, no 'thank you' for saving your life?" Fffffuuuu...

tl;dr - Literally: holy shit.

It's good, easily the best thing syfy has done since BSG and I wasn't surprised to find out it's based on a book. It's a bit of a slow burner which threw some people off but it's good the whole run. Syfy garbage is in my wheel house but this is the one Syfy show I wouldn't have qualms about recommending to ppl.

Helps they seem to actually be putting money into it so im not too surprised. IIRC their exec commented a year or two ago about how the channel "fell" because they just put way too many resources into reality tv stuff during the late 00s so they've actively been trying to develop more dramas.

Side Note: Might not be your thing if you're 100% into the movie but I also really like the 12 Monkeys tv show they have as well.

A lot of the stuff actually makes sense now if you go back on it.

For example: "why wouldn't I know where you live?"  :ohhh

Venture Bros. Love where they are going this season.  Really wish this show came out like every week.

Also the animation quality is amazing.

I attempted to watch Love but the guy is so ugly that it's kind of offensive, especially considering how cute the girl is.  Also his old girlfriend looks like this:
