Watched Haunting of Hillhouse.
Mixed bag i thought.
On the one hand, managing to keep the horror up for a season of television, is feat in and of itself, and they did a good job of it, plus the characters were all interesting and diversified enough to work well and carry the show swiftly.
On the other hand, there were way too many over-acted (and overwrote) monologues with "DRAMA, I AM NOW ACTING!" moments, to the point were it got kind of cringe inducing at times; and as for the horror bits, they were effective, but sort of a kitchen sink of clichès.
I also thought the last episode was a happy ending, tonally very much out of place; an anti climactic resolution to the whole thing, over explaining everything, showing too much, removing all tension.
I like horror stories that leave you with a sense of dread once you're done, but the 10th episode of Hillhouse leaves you with the impression that hey, the haunted mansion is actually a pretty sweet place to die in.
That said, i was really skeptical about the idea of a horror TV show, because it's a genre i always thought only worked in short bursts, but it won me over pretty quickly.
I can't see how they could do a season 2, but i'm in.
