I LOVED the original Thexder. What a fucking badass game.

So it's a PSP downloadable title on October 1st, and sometime on PS3 next year?

A new 2D shooter is always worth celebrating, even if my cretinous self doesn't know anything about why he is.

This was the first game I ever purchased. Apple IIgs version.

On the back of the box the developers were dressed like NINJAS and I was like OMG ASSASSINS FROM THE ORIENT MADE THIS GAME FOR ME

Just read that description, IN JAPAN VIDEO GAMES ARE TREATED AS AN ART FORM.

That amazing box copy pretty much shaped my image of Japanese gamemaking from ages 10-16

Well I just learned that Z Gundam on the NES is half a clone of Thexder

and this game is out in two weeks for $10.  Why not.

Yeah, it's so nostalgic.  Thexder was one of the first computer games I ever played!  My uncle had it and let me play it at his place everytime.  I didn't learn until later that it was made by TREASURE which made my memories even more awesome.  Even my mom remembers Thexder and mentions it once and a while.  :o

This is the first benefit I will received of upgrading 1 psp to 6.00.  $10 is awesome for this.

I've got a boxed copy of Zeta Gundam Hot Scramble... it is kinda like a Thexder clone, but crappy.

Well Game Arts was awesome too for a while!  I might be wrong, but I thought Treasure members were involved?

I didn't see anything about Treasure on the Wiki, but who knows.

Quote
The two Game Arts developers responsible for creating Thexder were Hibiki Godai and Satoshi Uesaka. In 1986, they developed another action-arcade game called Silpheed and in 1989 they wrote a Thexder sequel named Fire Hawk: Thexder The Second Contact. As with the original, FireHawk sold extremely well in Japan and the United States. Today, Thexder is still remembered by many as a classic action-arcade game.

I haven't heard of Thexder before this thread but played the Zeta Gundam game quite a bit when I was big into Gundam before Wing was on Cartoon Network and there were few Gundam games in America.  A lot of emulated games, Side Story on Dreamcast and Char's Counterattack import on PS1.

Even my dad still sings the Thexder music (don't ask)

I still have no idea what the speech sample is supposed to be at the title screen.

:bow Apple IIgs :bow2

I loved this game, but never could get very far.  It still remains one of my favorite games of the 80s though.  Silpheed on IIgs rocked too; it was a shock to find that the Sega CD version was not the same game.  I thought the IIgs version was so much better.

I can't believe how well Sierra ported this game from the original NEC PC-8801 to all the platforms. I'm pretty sure Americans did the porting, too. There was even a goddamn APPLE IIE VERSION that looked and played great.

nope, it's on the American store.  I'm gonna buy it later today.

on a side note, apparently this game isn't one of the "PSP Minis" because it has online, and those can't have online, yet it's still in the price and size range.  Sony  ::)

Yeah, the U.S. store has it!   :o :D

The game is so good...just like the original, only with updated visuals, music, and controls.  You can even use the classic control scheme!   :omg  Total nostalgia kick.

This was on the US store?  Damnit.  I spent from my surplus of weaboo points :(

Game is fun.  Been far too long since I played the original so I can't really compare but was the original more of a score based game as well?  It seems like if you want you can blow through the levels real quick, so the real meat of the gameplay is score attack; especially with the online rankings.

This is pretty fun.  I never played Thexder before and went in thinking it was Z Gundam, and while it plays similar, I didn't know about energy drain or anything like that.

It works fine on 5.50 GEN B.

Yup.  Might need to do the version.txt trick, but that's it.  Works fine on DAT CUSTOM.

Has anyone messed around with the 5.55/6.0 game decrypter? The instructions looks pretty complicated, not sure if its worth the time or what games it does/doesn't work on.

Yes, it's actually pretty easy to use, albeit a little tedious.  Just follow these steps:

Quote
1) Open the untouched ISO in UMDGen 4.00.
2) Click on File -> File List -> Export in order to save the virgin ISO's file structure to your PC somewhere.
3) Navigate to PSP_GAME\SYSDIR and extract the (encrypted) eboot.bin file, saving it somewhere on your PC. Close UMDGen 4.00.
4) Move the eboot.bin to the root of your memory stick.
5) Run Yoshihiro's 5.55/6.00 Decryptor program and hit X to decrypt. (The folder containing his program should go in X:\PSP\GAME like any other homebrew app).
6) Find the (now decrypted) eboot.bin in the X:\Decryptor folder and save it somewhere on your PC.
7) Open the untouched ISO in UMDGen 4.00.
8) Click on File -> File List -> Import and insert the original file structure file you exported. Confirm that you want to force the file positions to match.
9) Navigate to PSP_GAME\SYSDIR and delete the (encrypted) eboot.bin file. Right click where it used to be, click on Add -> Existing file(s), browse to the decrypted eboot.bin, and insert it.
10) Save the new ISO as an uncompressed ISO file (I'd give it a different name/location so as to not overwrite the clean ISO). It should result in a tweaked ISO that's ALMOST (but not quite) exactly the same size as the clean ISO.
