Can the vita be the next dreamcast?

*both have great hardware at the time.
*both have arguably great software.
*both are gettign trounced saleswise by thier competitor.

In a tablet and play games on your phone world, the vita never stood a chance in any place outside of Japan. That's the more relevant issue.

In western societies there is a market at this stage for one kid friendly handheld device that is on the cheap-ish side and has the Disney like image of Nintendo and their franchises to push it. Not a wanna be console that costs a decent amount and doesn't really have a definable market. Who is the vita for? Serious question.

Now why it seems to be failing in Japan, I have no clue as I'm not part of that society. But calling this thing dead on arrival for America was one of the more easy predictions.

SCEA did a piss poor job on letting consumers know it even existed.  Even with a shift to tablets/smartphones, when the hardware manufacturer does its best to pretend it doesn't even exist, it's pretty much doomed from the get go nor does it inspire much faith in publishers and developers to waste their time.

Again, it's why it baffles me to think that Sony is going to pull it together for PS4.  They've been fucking things up so much for so long that it will be a miracle if they can get a new console released in a competent faction.

Then again when you see Nintendo with a winning streak pull out the abomination that is the wii u you have to think it is just chance.

The Wii U is so unambitious that it crossed the line into being lazy and half assed.  Nintendo kept aiming lower and lower and finally hit the breaking point.

Speaking of Wii U, wow, those sales are truly pathetic.  January is going to start the death march.

This would be a valid reason if we would live in Japan and handhelds mattered, or if youre a handheld gamer for some niche games.

Most of people in the west that are not children don't really care about handhelds, they car about home consoles and the next COD.

Probably has always been this way, just that even this market has shrunk more this generation. I wonder if Nintendo would be in a significantly better position in the west if they would have launched the 3DS at a lower price & hardware that was clearly distinguishable from the DS and it's various models.

In a statement passed to VG247, UK score-keepers GfK Chart Track have announced that Skylanders is the 3rd best-selling game franchise in Britain to date, behind Call of Duty at first and FIFA at third.

The franchise has amassed $500 million in America alone since it began, and the second game in the series – Skylanders: Giants – has made $195 million in America since it launched last year. The figure covers sales of the actual game, accessories and toy packs.
Quote
ohn Coyne, VP of Consumer Marketing at Activision said of the stats, “Just a year ago, the concept of bringing toys to life in a virtual world was an untested play pattern that Activision and Toys For Bob believed in. Now the category has been established in the market and embraced by parents and kids everywhere.

More info

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/activision-toasts-another-blockbuster-franchise-skylanders-passes-500m-us-gross/0109192

Quote
According to GfK it's already the third-bestselling franchise in the UK, after EA's FIFA and Call of Duty.

In the US, NPD data says Skylanders is outselling popular rival brands such as Beyblades, WWE and Star Wars.

Skylanders sequel Skylanders Giants (which adds newer, bigger figures that light-up to the series - pictured) generated more than $195 million in US sales, inclusive of accessory packs and figures, in 2012 - which Activision's announcement today happily points out "eclipsed domestic box office sales for each of the top holiday kids feature films including Wreck-It Ralph and Rise of the Guardians".

That's 40 per cent of the US revenues made in just two months, while original release Skylanders generated the other $300m+ over a year.

“Just a year ago, the concept of bringing toys to life in a virtual world was an untested play pattern that Activision and Toys For Bob believed in.  Now the category has been established in the market and embraced by parents and kids everywhere,” said John Coyne, VP of consumer marketing at Activision Publishing in the announcement.

“We’re humbled by the continued support and acclaim from parents, kids and critics alike, but more importantly, it’s gratifying to see kids excited about the adventures that await them both in the digital and physical worlds.”

Toys R Us, which has been a key retailer for the game, even sang the series praises:

“Even before the concept was fully formed, we were immediately taken with the charm and magic behind the Skylanders property and following the highly successful introduction of Skylanders Spyro’s Adventures, we knew that Skylanders Giants would be a top-seller in 2012,” said Richard Barry, EVP and chief merchandising officer.

“We believe that Skylanders is one of the most innovative and exciting toy properties to hit the market and are thrilled to continue our strong support of the brand.”

“I would say it’s on the low end of what we expected,” said Mr. Hirai. He noted, however, that it takes 5-10 years before he can say a product has been successful. Sony is burning according to many on The Bore. And while the Vita is definitely having its problems, I'm asking myself, was this the master plan the whole time? Sony finished with a red ledger in it's last fiscal year. This is the fourth annual loss in a row. There were a variety of factors that contributed to that loss, many still affecting the company, but Sony still gave guidance that they would return to profitability by their fiscal end this March.

During the US Holiday season, the Vita sold 225,000 units. You've all seen the reactions to those numbers earlier in the thread. This is not the time to have that discussion. The Vita is also the only hardware Sony is currently selling at a loss. The PS3 (now profitable) sold 625,000 units and remarkably the PSP sold ~50,000 units. That's 675,000 units of money making hardware over a 60 day trading period.

So was this the real strategy? Launch the Vita to the hardcore fans and begin to build their install base while taking a small loss-to-small profit, but protect the bottom line by pulling every last dollar out of the PS3/PSP? Clearly Vtia is not performing to guidance or expectation, but the continued success of the PS3/PSP will improve the companies profitability.

Sony is a business after all, and their number one responsibility is to make money.

Ah, right you are.  He should have said Activision, not Ubi, then.  :wag

I don't know why Nintendo doesn't get on it.  They already sell a bucketload of Pokemon games and a bucketload of Pokemon toys.  It should be trivial to bring them together.  Maybe they don't think it would make them any more money than the current layout.

This is what it always comes down to with Nintendo it seems, but I stress that not going forward with this a bit more is what will bite them in the ass one day (already?)

Sorry for Ubi/Activision mixup I'm at work  :P

Nah, it was more like 220K.  Which is still just a bit over half PSP's December numbers from 2010, and 30-40K below its December numbers from 2011.

It actually sold worse in its first holiday season than multiple systems that were universally considered dead did over the holidays at the end of their lifespans (GC circa 2005, PSP circa 2010-2011).   No chance it'll have anything close to a normal generational lifespan at this point; the only question is how much longer Sony will try (or pretend to try) to stave off the inevitable.

Sony can save vita in japan, psp sales show that. They just need to make japanese games.

They launched vita with a last ditch effort to capture the western market with uncharted, wipeout etc. it failed. Now they should salvage it by releasinh japanese games. They can def get 5+ million sales there if they do.

I'm not sure how "hard" they're trying, but according to recent interviews it sounds like they are trying to initiate talks with devs but they're understandably not biting ("I see instead of holding bags of cash you're only holding that *thing*, lol thanks but no thanks~"). Devs haven't even shown lots of confidence or enthusiasm towards the PS4, so a Vita resurgence is highly, highly, unlikely at this point if things continue at the same trajectory.

I've reached the point where I don't really care and think the only reason people keep bringing it up is to deflect and make anything underperforming look better. I mean, my god, these numbers don't lie! It's dead.

too early to say if it's guaranteed dead at this point.  I don't think NPD is the best predictor...sales are an after the fact indicator of whether the content out there motivates people to buy one.  There isn't a whole lot out there for the Vita and hasn't been since launch.  But it hasn't even been a full year yet, so it's not hard to imagine some kind of software push before they give up completely.  Shitty versions of Assassin's Creed (well, a shittier version of the shit they put on consoles) and Call of Duty are apparently not gonna cut it.  I'm not sure what would cut it...I'm happy with ports and BC, personally :lol

I'll be more secure in calling it's time of death if the months leading up to E3 are devoid of announcements and if E3 has some pathetic showing of games just stave off the declaration of failure to a less high-profile time.

Vita has two E3s, two Gamescoms, two TGSes, and (in Japan) two holiday seasons under its belt.  The dearth of significant new software announcements in 2012 ought to speak for itself.  If there's any renewed software push, it'll have to come from Sony itself, which has no real established system-seller IP on handhelds and seems unlikely to create any.

I sympathize with people who want to keep playing the "wait for" game, but Sony simply doesn't deserve any benefit of the doubt at this point, and hasn't since TGS.

maybe this was Kaz's plan all along?

 :lol :lol :lol

Well, yeah, "at least it's selling better than Vita" isn't a very high bar to clear.

It really isn't but nah they have to get one in at any cost for the honor of the fatherland.

As for the vita people just have to except it imo.

i would compare it to someone with a terminal illness.

Yeah, right now my hope is for Ys to come out during a firesale of the Vita, then I can get one cheap to play that, Wipeout, and Gravity Rush.
