As to Vita resurgence talk, it's silly.  The differences between the PSP and Vita are many, and none of them favour Vita.  Here in Japan, many department stores (Japan's answer to Walmart) have flat out stopped carrying Vita and its software.  Even big electronics stores have cut Vita shelf space down to relatively nothing.  It's pretty much in 360 ville now.  PSP never got even close to this bad.

This is truly heartbreaking :(

There is still hope for Vita

Slash the price of the console, slash the memory prices or bundle them more, make the OS less INSANE (Why the fuck can't we backup our saves this isn't a Windows Phone FFS) and get more JAPANESE GAMES and less CALL OF SHIT PORTS.

too early to say if it's guaranteed dead at this point.  I don't think NPD is the best predictor...sales are an after the fact indicator of whether the content out there motivates people to buy one.  There isn't a whole lot out there for the Vita and hasn't been since launch.  But it hasn't even been a full year yet, so it's not hard to imagine some kind of software push before they give up completely.  Shitty versions of Assassin's Creed (well, a shittier version of the shit they put on consoles) and Call of Duty are apparently not gonna cut it.  I'm not sure what would cut it...I'm happy with ports and BC, personally :lol

I'll be more secure in calling it's time of death if the months leading up to E3 are devoid of announcements and if E3 has some pathetic showing of games just stave off the declaration of failure to a less high-profile time.

Vita has two E3s, two Gamescoms, two TGSes, and (in Japan) two holiday seasons under its belt.  The dearth of significant new software announcements in 2012 ought to speak for itself.  If there's any renewed software push, it'll have to come from Sony itself, which has no real established system-seller IP on handhelds and seems unlikely to create any.

I sympathize with people who want to keep playing the "wait for" game, but Sony simply doesn't deserve any benefit of the doubt at this point, and hasn't since TGS.

well they aren't going to suddenly stop production of it tomorrow because of this NPD.  I'm not sure why taking the wait and see approach is bad, consider that's what we'll get to do until it's officially dead.  I guess it's not as dramatic as calling it already dead.

also, it came out February this year in the U.S.

Maybe this was Kutaragi's plan all along...

...revenge.

i'm interested to see how Soul Sacrifice will be received in Japan.  It got a lucky break with the MH delay, but i'm not sure if it'll do well for a Vita game or genuinely hit hard.  Or no effect at all...

Analysis: Why the PS3 77m report is likely false. #1
IDC a research firm has recently reported that the PS3 has apparently overtaken the Xbox 360, 77m to 76m, widely discussed in this thread. Myself and others that follow sales have noticed and argued why it's very unlikely this is the case and that IDC are either lying or mistaken (I'm thinking the latter which I'll get to shortly.) Either way it's no surprise from the company that gave us this little gem. This is doing the rounds on most of the sites without anyone bothering to do much research, and people here are using it in debates.

First off I'll go back to the last solid PS3 shipment number we got before Sony merged PS2 and PS3 quarterly shipments. This would be a LTD of 63.9m as of March 31st, the end of Sony's FY. That Q the PS3 was down 0.2m YOY.

The following Q's looked like this.

Q2 Apr/June: 2.8m PS2 + PS3
Q3 July/Sep: 3.5m PS2 + PS3

In Q2 2011 the PS3 shipped 1.8m, it's noted in the financials that the PS3 was down this Q but it's unclear whether they mean in terms of Revenue or Units. What we do know is that the PS3 was down around 160,000 units in the US (NPD) and up in Japan 50,000 units. So between the two, down 110,000 units. No other data for Europe or around the world.

In Q3 we know for Sure PS3 was down, as it shipped 3.7m by itself in 2011, in Q3 this year it sold 3.5m with the PS2 included as well. It was down in the US by 260,000 units and down in Japan 275,000 units. So those two regions combined 525,000. Again no data for Europe or elsewhere. In the same period last year the PS2 shipped 1.2 million.

By end of September the sheer maximum amount of PS3's there could be on shelves was 70.2 million, that is without Sony shipping any PS2 at all, the likelyhood of that is low.

It's debatable what PS3 is truly at end of September, anywhere from 63.9 - 70.2.

I imagine (feel free to debate this!) Q2 broke down into around 1.8m PS3 (flat) and 1m PS2 (down 400k) and Q3 being 2.8m PS3 (down 900k) and PS2 700k (down 500k).

This would put PS3 at about 68.5m. It may be higher, it may be lower It's a good average for what we've got to work with though.

Fast forward to today and we apparently have 77 million PS3's. For comparison, last Q4 Sony shipped 6.5m PS3's. Even if we go off that highest figure 70.2, that means they would have had to have shipped 6.8m this Q. Of course it wasn't at 70.2, more likely the 68.5 I arrived at. So make that 8.5m Sony would have had to have shipped this Q to reach 77 mill.

This makes no sense given;

A) They're down in the US this Q around 550,000 units, and down in Japan around 125,000 units. So 675,000 combined.
B) Reaching 77m means PS3 just had it's best ever year shipping 15 million! This is up 700k on its previous best, despite being down Q1,Q3 (probably Q2 given the sales data we have) and down in the US this year over 1.14m and down in Japan over 330,000k.
C) Sony were not even forecasting 15m shipped. They expected around 13m PS3, and 16m PS2 + PS3 combined for their FY (ends march, Q1 will likely be similar to this years, certainly not up!)

We don't have any data for Europe, the strongest market for Sony. This doesn't automatically mean it's up or even flat there though. the US is 360's strongest market and that's dropped 25% there. Simply having 'PS3 is a beast in Europe' as your argument won't do when you have no numbers or evidence to back it up.

Lastly we have the 70m figure from Sony at the start of Nov, which means Sony would have had to have shipped 7m between Nov-Dec. This is more than what they've done any other Q in PS3 history despite having a month shaved off (where retailers are buying in prep of the holiday.)

My thoughts on how IDC arrived at these numbers. Well, they either guessed. Or they have seen Sony's financials, which state PS3 + PS2 shipped around 6.8m combined and added that onto the previous combined figure of 70.2m.

Is there a way the 77m figure is true? Sure, Sony shipped 8.5m during this Q. For that to happen they would have had to have stuffed the channels (big time).

MS did this last holiday you say? Well, 360 had it's best ever year in actual sell through last year in the US. In its biggest market it was actually very slightly up during the holiday. (2011) All evidence we have for PS3 this year does not suggest the same. There are other arguments as to how that figure they shipped isn't as abnormal as many think.

The grave is dug, the Vita is choking out a death rattle and looking at you to end the pain...

In the next few months, it might be advisable to get the games you need to get because I doubt there will be much of a clearance since there wasn't much out there in the first place.  Maybe you can flip these games for big money later on...

Anyways, Sony really screwed itself with UMDs. If the Vita was backwards compatible they could just stop PSP production and use Vita as the new model and trojan horse it for at least some Vita software sales, but with the way things are... they're two completely different systems.

Nintendo for whatever reason partially understands this; their systems always have full BC with the previous system and thus they can sell the 3DS to people who never had or sold their DS's and missed some games. That's not possible with the Vita.

Part of me wishes Nintendo was a bit more aggressive with phasing out old models, but there's probably financial reasons they don't.

Because you can't easily port down from PS3 or 360 like what was led to be believed, and original games cost wayyyyyyyy more than it does to make a PSP game at this day and age

I just don't know where the 3DS will get games either. Now that the Wii and PS2 are officialy dead theres nothing to port over like the PSP had. Devs would have to create entirely new assets and shit. I guess it really depends on the next generation though, I wouldn't be surprised that alot of indie devs flock to the handhelds as a main development source because of the cost of making a console title. but what do i know

I actually think that's probably the strategy they'll end up going with.  They probably hoped to turn their fortunes around outside Japan with the Vita.  Now that that isn't happening, there's no reason not to just go back to focusing on PSP domestically.

Too bad Sony's handheld efforts in America are nil in this equation. Goddamnit.

I hope Ys gets a release in English.  I'm not as confident as I was in the past.

Well, at least the Vita is region-free and Ys is a series not usually known for its exposition and storyline. Much easier to import than a Kiseki game, and no need to buy a Japanese system like with the 3DS.

I dunno why but Im more excited about what Sony will show first party wise.

I also have a strange good feeling about the PS4.

Sure vita is a failure sales wise, but the hardware and initial games were amazing. Sony hit a homerun but the market is just not there anymore.

The home console market is still there and if they deliver such a piece of hardware like the vita with just as cool games they will have a winner, in Europe at least.

3 continent split of the market is pretty interesting.

Yeah,Sony first party devs have been working on PS4 for quite a while,i think(PS3 software lineup, hints from PS3 devs, leaked roadmap). There should be some pretty amazing stuff there...

But overall I'm not sure what to think about PS4,

I don't think that relationship is in very good shape. And there are other sony partnerships with publishers that have seen friction over the last six months.

I can understand them being a little bit hissy about Activision COD Vita shenanigans, but what's done is done, life goes on---console COD is way too huge to be ignored anyway.
Not sure what would be the ultimate goal of such behavior...Hardcore "Nintendo without kids" console?

Maybe it's "resources" related?Dunno

I'm finding it hard to see a scenario where MS doesn't crush next gen out of the ballpark.

The only scenario is the one where next gen craps out for everyone, I think.  I wonder if Sony has the resources to battle MS properly next gen.  Them selling that building is another piece of evidence backing the rumours that their liquid assets are insufficient to keep the lights on these days, so to speak.

I don't see this discussed anywhere but what would be the ballpark about money needed to launch a PS3/360 like console these days?

R&D,manufacturing,distribution,first/third party investment,marketing,$400 console(negligible loss per console)

Assuming no insanity in the above things

$1 - 2 billion?

PS3 wasn't more powerful because of shitty GPU

I fully believe PS4 will be again more powerful and faster than Xbox 720 (just like this gen with PS3 and 360)

People working in the industry would disagree with you, both machines have their strengths and weakness but I guess people believe what they want to believe, marketing is all about numbers.I think you would be pretty surprised what people working for Sony think about PS3.

This reminds me about something posted long time ago(i think it was Anihawk),xbox/ps2 related

something like this,iirc
-at first there was CPU clock number printed on PS2 box
-xbox launches,PS2 clock number mysteriously disappears

unless ps4 is some sort of sony hail mary pass specs-wise, don't get your hopes up

it'll be powerful, a noticeable improvement over ps3 where everything works smoother/better and doesn't take a goddamned 1/2 year to load up, but i doubt it's gonna be anything particularly mind-blowing

i just don't think they have the money to dazzle anymore

Uhm Vita dazzled. They have the engineers to build great stuff. Maybe with a less unqique structure this time around.

People act like Sony is doomed already. I guess it all depends in where you look from but in Europe the ps3/xbox situation is reverse no?

Ww both sold equally the same numbers, with 360 selling more games, this doesnt mean there is less interest in ps3 though.

Keep in mind that Oscar's numbers are from NA. It's not selling that much worse in Europe.

I think it's possible for Sony to bounce back next-gen if they can up with a system that's on the same power level as the 720 and cheaper. If they continue to offer free online multiplayer and the system is priced at a reasonable level then it will sell well. Even though mobile and PC gaming is becoming more popular there is still a huge demand for living room gaming with controllers that offer tactile feedback.

vita dazzled with off-the-shelf parts, and what wouldn't dazzle in comparison with 3ds

i don't think they're doomed, i just think they're gonna play ps4 way more conservatively than ps3, and everyone expecting some sort of skynet from them is gonna end up hella disappointed

you don't start selling off your buildings and other assets for the hell of it

Yeah i think so too. Its going to be a more focussed machine.

But freeing up so much assests makes sense in their situation. Having so much value sitting in property wont take em out of the slump.

I feel that the days of third party exclusives for Handhelds will die after this set. Instead it'll just be ports of the iOS versions from here on out and if Nintendo releases a new system you'll get their incredibly mediocre games.

i'm going with van cruncheon on this one. the console war is a regional conflict that is about to become engulfed in a world war of ecosystems. sony don't just need new hardware, they need allies.

microsoft will field a reasonable army (if in some bitterly distasteful way which attempts to press gang their open platform in to the proprietary war effort), nintendo will go the way of tiger electronics.

the vita was sony's naivety marching them in to battle in full parade dress, only to get shredded by entrenched machine gun fire.

Why would you ever listen to what maxy says, K. His allegiance is well known.

I cannot imagine Microsoft's blitzkrieg, though. It will consume Northern America.

This has nothing to do with my allegiance, believe it or not I would like everything to sell great because healthy industry is good for all of us.
As for Europe,Xbox brand has grown significantly, feel free to compare Xbox numbers  to 360 in Europe.

Little story about xbox in my country

First xbox was super niche machine, nobody except extreme hardcore cared about it,retail presence like 360 in Japan today, people thinking that xbox is not real/some MS joke.

360 launches,wtf is this,hmm HD graphics cool
Thing breaks like fuck, but piracy kicks in...shops selling hacked 360,reliable as Albanian batteries but free games  :drool
Sold only in specialized shops, games coming with like 2-3 week delay...expensive($80-$100)
PS3 launch---expensive like fuck,no piracy...yuck,xboxxx
PS3 drops in price, people buy it,retail presence growing rapidly, xbox stuff keeping pace only in very specialized shops
Thanks to 360 growing popularity  software keeps trickling in/becomes cheaper
Even despite rampant piracy people buy original 360 software

Fast forward few years ahead...for the first time ever Xbox is sold in the likes of Walmart(playstation stuff present there for like 10 years)
Shops have huge library of new and used(for the first time ever) software/new software down to $70,discounts.

Playstation still has bigger presence in retail, about 50% more to 1:1 depending on the shop but 360 stuff is there and not tucked away in the corner.

All that with

-no official MS support
-no official XBL(London hotels lol)
-absolute zero marketing

Sony(playstation) has official presence here and they promote their stuff quite often.

I don't think you should be concerned what MS does in US,Borys. Also damn you for making me write all this stuff >:(

They did lots of mistakes this gen and look were they are right now.Imagine if they did everything right...

I think a lot of people dont understand that the conquer the livingroom approach wont work in europe simply cause europe doesnt have things like netflix, hulu and everything else due to the fact its a copyright jungle.

Yes in the uk and ireland there is netflix now, and its crap, i had it and there really is nothing on it and its updated once every month or two. Netflix numbers in europe = 1 million

How could ms change this? It cant.

The all media approach of ms simply wont matter in 80% of the european market. Unless somehow they manage to get the rights to all movies and sport. Which they cant cause SKY has the premier league and in every country its a different corp that has rights to football.

This media approach will only be viable in the us/uk. In Europe people pirate movies or buy br/dvd still, there are no good alternatives.
