Does the fact that pc gets most big games and wiiu gets none mean that pc games justify the porting cost at least?

Yes, but the fact is the "lead" platform on a lot of games is in fact, the pc.  So port costs are a lot cheaper.

Depending on how much of a full version it is, I think PSO2 will carry the Vita through this generation much like Monster Hunter did the PSP (but in a lesser way, about 20% of the monster hunter player base in size)

Is the Vita version of PSO2 free to play?

Also, I remember reading an article where the PC version had about 90k peak concurrent users at launch.  That seems kinda crazy, especially for Japan.  It would be like the second largest game on Steam

Could always play on both since there's crossplay blocks and all.

I would have imported the Vita version (the cart can be played online on U.S. accounts), but then I realized it was pointless since PSO2 doesn't have an offline mode.  I'm only gonna be playing online from home...might as well just play it on PC.

How accurate is this chart?

I thought GoW3 did worse than what it says here.

I just find it interesting considering the size of install base for the respective releases. And the spinoffs did surprisingly well. I guess this series is not as overhyped as the Uncharted.

Similar to the Nintendo question...say you were put in charge of all Vita operations for the next 12 months. What would you do specifically in the US and Japan to spur sales? Let's assume you can't lower the price any more

For the Vita?
• Add PS Mobile compatibility
• Continue to invite indie PC developers. It's easy to port to and some titles even sell well
• Continue to add good PS+ freebies. In Europe we just got Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward
• Tamagotchi tie-in with the next big suitable PS4 title
• Try to convince smaller publishers to release translations of niche Japanese games. I'd love to get an English version of Mahjong Fight Club, Romance of the Three Kingdoms 12, and Ciel No Surge

You can also still download Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Gravity Rush plus some smaller titles. It's an excellent way of promoting the system.

Pachter speaks,gaf listens
http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/gk1uwi/pach-attack---the-handheld-market-sucks---he-says-
Quote
On why Microsoft isn't in the handheld market:
The reason is that the handheld market sucks, and to the extend there is a handheld market and Nintendo owns it.

About PS Vita:
The Vita is a joke. It's a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful piece of hardware and nobody owns one. The reason nobody owns one is It's too good, It does too much. Developers aren't making games for it because the market is to small.

More about Vita:
You're not going to get a big install base with the Vita at this price, and even though It's a really slick device, if there is not a lot of people who own it, you're not going to get a lot of sotfware. And It's a vicious cycle, if you don't have software, you're not going to buy the Vita. If you don't have Vitas, you're not going to get software. So, the Vita sucks, Sony has no prayer of making money on the Vita.

About the handheld market:
The handheld market is not as big as It used to be. With the 3DS I think Nintendo is probably going to continue to do ok, 15 million a year, that's a nice market for handhelds. With the Vita on the market, they (Sony) are going to make 5 million a year, why do we need a third (handheld)? All that would happend is that demand of 20 million handhelds will get split three ways instead of two. Nobody makes money selling five millions units a year.

To answer PD question(US),I don't think people would care about Vita even if Sony lowered game prices to $0.There is just no market for this thing.

Japan--some weird niche, squeeze as much money from them as possible,99.9% games never leave Japan

Does PS+ actually make money for Sony? I wonder what the opportunity cost is for having your customers not buy shit and just wait for it to be free later on.

I would imagine they also have to pay third parties in some way for giving away their shit for free.

If people really want to play something they'll get it near launch. By the time games hit PS+ they're not bringing in much money from the retailers anymore. They probably make money from both the PS+ subscription fee plus some extra money from additionally sold DLC. Sure, some might hold off on buying games in hope that they'll someday make it to PS+, but I'm guessing that's a small part of the total market.

Sony and third party publishers probably have hard time making money on the crowd that will mainly buy games below 20$ due to used games. Playstation+ makes them some money out of those people.

The fourth instalment in the Gears of War series is a prequel and as such cannot match the launch week sales of its hugely popular predecessor which sold 4 times more in its first week. Sales of ‘Tomb Raider’ drop by 44%, but it still manages to stay ahead of another ‘survival’ themed title, Activision Blizzard’s ‘The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct’, a new entry at No3.
A survivor of another kind is ‘FIFA 13’ (+32%), 26 weeks never outside the Top 6 and up 2 places this week to No4. In their second weeks of release ‘Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2’ (-37%) and ‘God of War: Ascension’ (-61%) both fall one place and four places respectively to No’s 5 and 6. ‘Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate Edition’ debuts at No7 with the 3DS version accounting for 55% of sales and Wii U the rest. The Wii U title accounts for almost 50% of the value generated by all Wii U software this week. ‘SimCity’ (-33%) drops from No5 to No8, ahead of previous All Formats No1s ‘Far Cry 3’ (+18%) at No9 and ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II’ (+27%) at No10.

Price promotions give a boost to ‘Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance’ (+114%), up from No19 to No11 and ‘Aliens: Colonial Marines’ (+71%) up from No21 to No16.

The PSV shipment on this must be tragically low as it's sold out everywhere.

Also PSP PBS 2013 is selling at 3280 yen NEW from launch. So against a 6480 yen Vita version (and a huge installed userbase advantage) then no surprises in the ranking.

I'm buying the PS3 version today -  the Vita game is soooooooooo amazing. With an extra presentation layer i don't know what i'd do to my pants.

I'm psyched for it, but will probably wait until it drops in price in the Fall. I was thinking about getting 2012 for cheap now that 2013 is out.

‘Bioshock Infinite’ debuts at the top of our All Formats chart this week with the Tuesday release becoming the second biggest launch of the year.

In taking top spot it also sets a record as the biggest week 1 for a Bioshock title with almost nine thousand more sales than predecessor ‘Bioshock 2’ which took the No1 back in Week 6 2010. Despite its success it’s unable to become 2013’s biggest release with Square Enix’s ‘Tomb Raider’ (+45%) in No2 still holding the honour following its release in Week 10. ‘Tomb Raider also sees a strong boost in sales this week with price promotions ensuring it easily holds second place ahead of several other new releases.

It means ‘Gears of War: Judgment’ (-63%) slips to No3 above EA’s ‘FIFA 13’ (+86%) which benefits from strong sales to retain the No4 spot. There’s a debut at No5 for developer Next Level Games and ‘Luigi’s Mansion 2’ landing on 3DS. It’s the second ghost hunting outing for Mario’s little brother following on from ‘Luigi’s Mansion’ which landed at No3 on Nintendo’s Game Cube back in Week 18 2002. The first of two new entries for EA in our Top 10 sees ‘Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel’ land at No6 with just over a hundred sales separating it from ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II’ (+67%) in No7. At No8 ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14’ is the second of EA’s new releases and along with ‘Crysis 3’ (+64%) at No10 it means they have four titles in our Top 10 this week.

Elsewhere in the chart Wii U exclusive and developer Traveller’s Tales new title ‘Lego City Undercover’ lands at No12. There’s also the return of Sly Cooper with developer Sanzaru Games bringing the light fingered raccoon back for his 4th outing in ‘Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time’ at No31 for PS3 and Vita.

Similar to the Nintendo question...say you were put in charge of all Vita operations for the next 12 months. What would you do specifically in the US and Japan to spur sales? Let's assume you can't lower the price any more

More games and ads, money hats all around, hire a fleet of viral marketers to take over reddit/gaf that's bigger than all the other fleets of viral marketers that other companies have placed.   Price cut on mem cards.  No "value" bundles.

and make Reggie and Iwata "disappear."  Not that that would help sales, that's just for trolling purposes.

Totally what I expected, but it's still a fascinating psychological trainwreck.
