I beat Control last night. The first few hours of that game were great, and then it's like "wait, this is the whole game?" A game about an invasion of cosmic space monsters, and all you ever do is run around sterile corridors (that sometimes get red and glowy) and fight possessed humans. Not even a cool boss fight at the end? Come on. The Fridge boss was basically the only good enemy design in the game.
I loved the lore and SCP Foundation trappings, but the game never really goes anywhere. Even the unlockable weapon forms are pointless, you can easily beat the game with the starting pistol and Throw.
I thought the Fridge was the worst boss haha
Control's negative is like Alan Wake's negative in that Remedy is making single concept games that are super repetitive and pulled together by narrative and visuals. Control lives and dies on it's combat. It's essentially a character action game like Bayonetta/DMC as a TPS (kinda like Vanquish except not as much, or no, cover shooting), the level design is whatever, the story is interesting and mostly just a bunch of neat notes and good voice acting, music is cool, art is cool, but what keeps you playing should be the pure joy of each combat encounter that get more and more challenging with different enemy setups.
The boss fights are the worst part imo because the combat just isn't designed very well for single enemy encounters and it's about crowd control. They're boring sitting back patterns repeating like the fridge boss.
I think it's great for what it is. Helps that the graphics are A++ (which also helped Alan Wake's repetition). Haven't bought/played the first DLC, gonna wait until the 2nd is out and play both.
