Feel like Biden is going to win just because it would be the funniest result possible. No money or organization in the primary, hidden away by his campaign because being seen by the public only hurts his standing, clearly in mental decline, still becomes President of the United States.

It'd be the bronzehammer "ah well nevertheless" tweet but turned against Trump.

I keep on swinging back and forth from Trump going to get reelected because of incumbency and being the default, to Biden going to win easy because people are bored of the Trump show and don't want to pay attention to politics anymore.

between the fraud trump is committing, and the idiocy of people cutting slits in their facemasks in protest, trump has the easiest road map.

The GOP nominee for Senate from Oregon is a Qanon believer.

The story came out, her campaign released a statement distancing her from Qanon, but now she's denying that statement and standing up for what she believes in. She said she was "physically in tears" reading her campaign's statement.

Is this not what's going to happen? Trump and Republicans cockblock all recovery for the next six months and Biden is handed the smouldering ruins of a world power. I don't care how many brain trust geniuses are in his administration, he's not going to pass tax credits and call it a day.

Something something, most progressive president since FDR.

Quote
But if Biden is elected in November, the left may get a presidency it likes after all — or at least one it hates less than anticipated. The coronavirus outbreak and the resulting massive surge in unemployment has moved American political discourse to the left: Ideas that would have been considered too liberal for most Democrats a few months ago are now being proposed by Republicans. And if American politics is moving left, expect Biden to do the same. Biden was often cast as a centrist or a moderate during the Democratic primaries, but those labels don’t really describe his politics that well — he doesn’t really seem to have any kind of set ideology at all.

Instead, Biden’s long record in public office suggests that he is fairly flexible on policy — shifting his positions to whatever is in the mainstream of the Democratic Party at a given moment. So if Biden wins the presidency and his fellow Democrats are still clamoring for more government spending to help the pandemic recovery, Biden is likely to be a fairly liberal president, no matter how moderate he sounded in the primaries.1

Trump and Republicans cockblock all recovery for the next six months and Biden is handed the smouldering ruins of world power, so he just pulls the lever and lets the money rain down. I know most of his plans are from the brain trust but there's no way he doesn't do some kind of (student) debt forgiveness, halve the price of college, supercharge Obamacare, and so on. Irrespective of what Twitter says, it'll be 60% of what Sanders wanted.

unfortunately if Biden wins, The Deficit will resume being important on January 20th

By the way, once again it is shocking to me that the US President has the power to unilaterally withdraw from international treaties (on a whim), with no oversight. That's not the way it should be in a democratic republic.

I actually think there's more tolerance for big Keynesian spending in the Democratic party than people would care to admit.

But first assume zero Republican votes (despite what Biden says, I don't think he's going to charm them into working with him and I suspect Josh Hawley might not actually be a leftist). Even if you nuke the filibuster or abuse the hell out of reconciliation you need to get to 50 votes and I don't anticipate the Dems winning the Senate with much, if any, cushion. Shit gets very difficult when you need to hold together your entire caucus.

If Trump loses, he will jump out of the burning husk of the GOP with a golden parachute and the entire house of cards collapses.
Republicans at that point will do whatever they can to cling to their remaining seats including giving Biden their support.

I've settled on about 52 and I think our chances only get better the worse things get. Coronavirus is a wildcard but let's just assume D and R turnout are conditionally independent.

[close]

The fallout from this is worse than the financial crash and there's also a mountain of dead bodies. It doesn't matter how much internal dissent there is in the Senate, no one is going to go public with that when the only thing stopping millions of people of people from losing their homes is a smattering of state moratoriums on evictions. You mentioned West Virginia but West Virginia is so vulnerable economically right now that ending his constituents pain is going to override any ideological or cultural predilections he has.

I think you are right about the politicians but mandark is right about the electorate. Even with Sanders, a lot of the people that don’t like him are more about how “realistic it is” or “I don’t like him personally” than actually having substantive disagreement on whether we collectively should pay more for health care with government $.
