The patents being fought over nowadays are becoming more and more abstract and bordering on arbitrary. I have to say, nerfing local searches is kind of scummy, especially since nobody gives a fuck about it on iOS. :lol

Because:
- The patent is dumb and shouldn't have bee granted in the first place, and the judge is a moron or on the Apple payroll. I don't know which would be worse.

yeah, it's got a portrait-only menu kind of like the kindle fire - i think you can turn it off, though
yeah, you're right, they just locked out the tablet home screen and restricted it to the phone interface
you have to root it to turn the tablet home screen back on
There's a hilarious amount of butthurt on Google+
#BoycottApple
i don't have a problem with them locking it to the phone interface, cramming all the tablet home screen stuff into a 7 inch screen is kind of awkward and clunky anyway
awww remember taco-chan?
i thought of you two like the bobbsey twins
he was freddie and you were flossie
dawwwww
The Bobbsey Twins are the principal characters of what was, for many years, the Stratemeyer Syndicate's longest-running series of children's novels, penned under the pseudonym Laura Lee Hope. The first of 72 books was published in 1904, the last in 1979, with a separate series of 30 books published from 1987 through 1992.Goddamn you're old, Oscar. Dropping references to >100-year old characters.
Android Tablet and Phone here. Apple has pissed me off from way before i-shit times, when I had to use their shitty desktops to use physics/math software. Fuck em double.

They also have like no support for older computers so basically fuck you if you don't update.
Yeah, and iOS is similar. Upgrade your phone if you want the new iOS. Upgrade your iOS if you want any new apps.
Fragmentation on Android isn't a problem if you're not a 14-year old Latino girl who's given the cheapest Android phone her parents think they can get away with.

Yet there are plenty of companies out there, some of our clients included, that rely on that demographic. It's just extra hassle on our developers when they can be focusing on exciting new technologies and features on jelly bean.

???
Apple is making iOS7 compatible with 3 year old phones and three year old iPads. That's well within reason.
And even if you think that's still too soon, Apple's approach prevents fragmentation which is still a big problem on Android.
I sure hope iOS7 is more "compatible" than iOS6 was on 2-3 year old iPhones. That shit brought my wife's 4 to its knees.
Nice casual racism Andrex

That's actually a very synergistic paradigm shift where their disruption of your obstruction of their abstract abstraction makes everything just work.

Yo, I had to lug around a 2007 iMac in a city once and it was a fucking nightmare, I feel your pain. Why'd you go to the other stores first besides the Apple store though? The few experiences I've had with off-site "apple certified" places left me with very negative impressions, but the Apple store has gone smoothly pretty much every time:respect

LMFAO @ ios deleting apps with no notice by default now. What a shitty dumb fucking idea, fuck Tim Cook and fuck this companyDo you mean deleting from an iOS device any 32b apps which can't run anyway? Or is this something about apps which pass distribution approval and are then reneged?
It’s a really crappy policy.
It makes it so that replacing the battery on your iPhone isn’t even really worth it. I’d rather replace my battery for 70 bucks after three years and have snappy performance than for Apple to slowly kill my phone.
Edit: I haven’t noticed my air 2 slowing down much. But iPads have always had longer lifespans than the phones. I suspect my air 2 will go at least a few more years before I feel bothered to replace it.

iOS 11 tricks people into thinking Bluetooth and wi-fi turns off
Here’s another rude thing: in the new iOS Control Center, you think you’re turning off Bluetooth and wi-fi by deselecting their icons. But you’re not. Toggling these features into the off position simply disables them. This really pissed off security researchers who believed many users would feel tricked into a false sense of security that their devices weren’t talking to other devices when they actually were.
Just more confirmation that ditching Apple products was the way to go.

But Apple itself doesn't have a policy for "replace battery." They've got a flat repair rate which covers anything that's wrong with your iOS device, and it's exorbitant enough that a tremendous amount of third-party repair businesses have cropped up. Apple doesn't benefit from replacing batteries, but this "hidden" feature does appear to make their hardware run for longer, but at slower speeds.
Reading back through this thread, chrono sounds like a spousal abuse victim.
You can leave Apple, chrono. I promise it will be ok.

No it has this dumb "offload unused apps" option that arbitrarily decides to delete apps from the phone without deleting the icon, putting a little cloud icon next to the app name indicating that it's in the cloud I guess. My phone died playing hearthstone last night and after it restarted guess what? Hearthstone gone for some distinguished mentally-challenged reason
I don't remember turning it on, but it's possible. It's so weird though, it also unloaded the default Maps app a week or two ago, which I don't use a lot but seems like it would be something permanently installed.

It kinda sucks Apple has shat the bed like that considering I'm not super happy with Windows. I want a decent CLI but it's awkward on Windows. It's not on Windows, it's on Bash on Ubuntu on Windows. :snoop
Shouldn’t the hung system be the top?
Confirming what everybody basically already knows.... Apple does indeed throttle the performance of old phones in newer OS updates.... ostensibly to help maintain battery life on older batteries. So you’re 2+ year old iPhone really is a little t slower than it was over time.

Even worse, you can't actually interface with the Windows system without going through a bunch of bullshit to make it like /mount/sdd/c because they separate the two despite New Technology kernel originally supposedly supposed to support non-Windows kernals.
You can't "top" the hung system to kill Windows processes. :'( Task Manager or bust. :'( :'(
see that is what i dont get
if i run a linux VM on windows i know what will work and what will not
but this bash on ubuntu thing, you have linux CLI goodies integrated with windows but not quite
how the hell does that make it better? with a VM you know it's nicely separated but with bash on windows you don't know what the hell is going on
I got my first iphone this year - an Iphone 8+. I really like it. There's a few gripes about some illogical extra steps to do some basic things but so far that's really all. I'm not big on apps or gaming. I just surf the web and listen to music/audiobooks. My last two phones (Nexus 5 and Lumia 950XL) would have a dead battery by about noon, even when new. I've been putting my phone on the charger at night with 40-60% battery left every night. I've got no real complaints after about a month of use.
Edit: Wait, I do have a gripe. Why do all pictures show up in the same damn spot in Photos? More precisely, why do saved pictures show up in the camera roll in the Camera app? My one, single eccentricity is that I like to save nudie photos but now if I'm showing someone pictures I've taken then Sunny Leone's tits or Reddit PAWG ass is sitting right next to it. And you know how motherfuckers love to swipe unprompted. Any tips on how to get around this shit would be appreciated.
damn these family friendly companies. looks like I just won't be showing anyone anything.

I would love to switch back to android, but on Android you never know if some apps are available, when they will be available, if they will work and for how long they will work.
Its such a swamp of shit.
Also you dont know how long your phone will be supported or if it will get updates, what kind of bloatware is installed etc.
Figured out why Amazon was in no rush to put the Prime Video app on AppleTV for the longest time: while all the Prime Video free streaming stuff is readily available, anything to rent or buy must first be purchased through a regular web browser. That's /arguably/ easy on mobile devices, as you can just fire up the browser, but AppleTV doesn't have a browser on the device.
It threw me for a loop, because I'd been using the Amazon Prime Video app on PS3/PS4 for a year, and it allows users to just clickthrough a purchase to their registered Amazon account.
Apple's policy to prevent people from entering their CC information in apps and then being held accountable was understandable, but the idea that I have already got an account on a server and can't access it is utter foolishness.

I figured it was Amazon’s choice to do it this way. Apple probably wanted a % cut for each rental/sale.

Correct. This is also why Comixology stopped allowing comic purchases shortly after getting bought by Amazon.
On the other side of the fence, Google Play has a similar policy but allows exemptions if the digital goods can be bought outside the app (like on the web.) Amazon Prime Video and Comixology on Android have full in-app purchase support.
I miss Spotify so much. :( I had to cave to my daughter's wishes since all their stuff was on Apple music. They were each going on month to month subscriptions and I had my Spotify sub. I thought that was a waste of money when the whole family could be covered for $14.99/month. So in the end, it was me that had to start over with my curation.
The things we have to do for our kids. :maf

I am 95% Apple would frown or outright disallow an app that did that.
I'm sure Amazon doesn't *like* leaving money on the table, so it must be Apple's policy. Any potential purchases must be done using their in-app payment APIs.
Feel free to revisit the title of this thread. ;)Oh, I always have that at the edge of my awareness. Not just when in this thread, but in my daily life now.

Digital content, yeah. Except I can purchase stuff through Amazon.com on the browser, even Comixology titles and Amazon streaming rentals — so maybe Apple forbids the use of direct links in-app to mobile browser pages?
(peeks)
Huh, even the iOS Amazon.app offers the category for digital music, but the purchase buttons are dimmed/deactivated, and it shows "Digital music is not available for purchase from this device." It similarly seems unable to purchase digital music through the web browser now as well. Huh. :-\
My next phone may or may not be Android. I'm really getting tired of feeling trapped in Apple's econosphere.

While I like Android, the OS upgrade problem leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe my opinion would change if Treble was more readily adopted.
Amazon did have a phone a few years ago.i remember and that was a disaster but that was a few years ago. we're talking now, they're up, and their services are dominating.
They kind of fucked it up by pushing amazon too hard on it, from what I understand. It didn’t sell very well.
Apple is stupid as fuck and they still function as if everyone using their products are 10 year olds.
And iPhoto ugh. It needs to be smarter. I was at a photo print kiosk at a store a few weeks ago trying to print pics of my kids. The guy behind me got a full view of my wife in all her glory because the damn hidden photos aren’t actually hidden. Even if you hide a photo it ends up in photo stream and Moments on all your other devices.
Apple really should just dump Siri and allow Google or Amazon or whoever else to sell their AIs like an app. Siri is never going to be able to compete at this point because Apple doesn’t harvest their users data.
iCloud would be alright if it integrated better with the OS X file system. If I save a PDF or something it should be in my documents folder on my Mac. Instead everything is tucked away in the iCloud folder where a lot of the file structure feels redundant.

I pick up a X a couple of weeks ago. Easily the best phone and camera I've ever had. FaceID works better than I expected. Though it only works half the time with a hat and sunglasses on. Plus, my carrier had a promotion and I got $350 off of the price.I'm still rocking a 6s. With the battery replacement program this thing still has life. I was close of getting the X but something about it turned me off (could have been the fact that they didn't even include an actual fast charger plug which is fucking insane not to do) I'll wait for whatever phone comes out this fall and then i'll switch.
i'm going to wait it out until the end of the year. either get the XS or the X when it's a lower price.
What i really want though is the watch.
Face ID does the same thing when Touch ID doesn't work and asks for the code to unlock it.The main pull on the watch for me would be the ability to use it at the gym without a phone in my pocket constantly slipping out. I want it for that ability to answer calls and listen to music. Outside of that the heart monitor is nice.i'm going to wait it out until the end of the year. either get the XS or the X when it's a lower price.
What i really want though is the watch.
I've had a series 2 "Watch edition" which is the more expensive but relatively indestructible version. It's a little thicker as well. The sapphire glass face is still pristine and scratch free. I can't say the same for the stainless steel housing which has some scuffs and scrapes from everyday wear for over a year. Most of them are waterproof as well.
The watch face gallery is uninspired and I always find myself going back to the same one. You can control the flow of music and volume. It's too small of an area to search for music on the watch. You are better served to find what you want and hit play on your phone.
It's handy to tell Siri to call or text someone when you are alone and don't want to look like idiot in public. Especially when it doesn't work the first time. Text messages show up and are easily readable. You can respond with your voice which is handy when you are driving. Call quality on the watch is fair, but not that loud. The other person can e hard to hear if there is background noise like when driving.
If you are still on the fence, get a cheap version to try it out. Then upgrade when it's something you see yourself using in the long term.
tl;dr version. 7/10 would buy again.
Non LTE watches have 5gb of local storage for music when the phone is not within bluetooth range. Plenty of room for a couple of playlists. Sync the headphones to the watch and you'll be good to go. The watch does a more precise measure of the health metrics tracked(heart rate, steps, and sleep if you want to wear it overnight).to receive calls do you have to have the phone near bluetooth range? no right? i can leave the phone home, on wifi, and then use the watch at the gym and receive calls right?
San Francisco isn't a valleyi was adding silicon valley with sanfran you fuckboy
I'm going to cling to my 6s Plus as long as possible or until they bring back Touch ID. Fuck Face ID. I don't want a phone where my wife can't unlock it because it only recognizes 1 face.
Still having a headphone jack is also nice.

If your phone was ever on the gym's wifi, the watch will be as well so yes it will work like it is attached to the phone. I left my phone at home one day and went to work. I received all my messages on the watch. You would need the phone nearby for calls though.
Yeah i never understood the outrage over this. At this point if you're using headphones with a phone it should be wireless. And if you're an audiophile you're already using a separate DAP with an amp anyways.
I gotta admit, I was very much against the removal of headphone jacks, but since I got a Pixel 2, I haven't cared. Don't have BT headphones or anything...just realized that I rarely if ever use headphones with my phone in general, and hey, there's a adapter for it if needed. Still sucks if you want to listen and charge at the same time, though.

I miss my headphone jack honestly. Long since lost my dongle, my Bluetooth headphones are shitty, at the bottom of my workout bag, and I always forget to charge them, but I have 4 pairs of headphones in my desk.

Here we have Google and Amazon working tirelessly on world domination with A.I and what does Apple do? Offer you more animojis.

Ready for a new air put one in me daddy cookYeah, ready for a new air as well but that new pro looks enticing. There's rumors they'll be discontinuing the air with only the macbook as an option. Makes sense considering how thin they are. What more could they do with an air besides go full 'chrombook' which would be stupid.

There's a great Mega64 podcast skit dealing with Rocco's Apple obsession titled "Apple Cuck." :lol
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B2gXK0EGc8
Pixel 2's get three years of software updates (https://www.androidpolice.com/2017/10/19/google-says-pixel-2-will-receive-three-years-software-updates/), which is the same as the iPhone. What are you talking about "same with the iphone" . My iphone has gotten every single update besides the ones that came to the Iphone X and it's going on 5 years.
The iPhone also recently got raked over pretty bad about the whole "slowing down old phones" update. Aside from that, there's been diminishing returns in macOS and iOS software updates anyways, as you yourself have said ITT (re: Animojis.)
Resale values are on a long timescale so it's much harder to judge them for newer products than Apple's lines, but the Pixel's resale prices have remained fairly good and consistent. A used first-gen Pixel can be bought today on eBay for $200-250 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Google-Pixel-XL-AT-T-T-Mobile-Verizon-32GB-128GB-LTE-FACTORY-UNLOCKED-Smartphone/282921120225?hash=item41df69b1e1%3Am%3AmcITQ8wljfw8ppmwU3IqfoQ%3Asc%3AUSPSFirstClass%2102109%21US%21-1&var=582778950251&_sacat=0&_nkw=used+google+pixel+1+128+gb&_from=R40&rt=nc&_trksid=m570.l1313&LH_TitleDesc=0%7C0), which is easily comparable with a used iPhone 7 (https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313.TR10.TRC1.A0.H0.Xused+iphone+7+128+gb.TRS1&_nkw=used+iphone+7+128+gb&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=See-All-Categories&_odkw=used+iphone+7).
To be clear, you're paying a first-party "tax" no matter who you go with (Apple, Microsoft, Google), but to pretend there's a huge gap in ecosystems these days is just outdated thinking. Pick what you like, but don't pretend it's inherently better.
Edit- And if we're throwing laptop updates into the mix, there's simply no question that Chrome OS beats everyone else. (https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/6220366?hl=en) But that's not really fair since it was created over a decade after Windows and macOS, and automatic updates were a huge priority in its initial design.
What are you talking about "same with the iphone" . My iphone has gotten every single update besides the ones that came to the Iphone X and it's going on 5 years.
I've never seen an Android hold value. You're saying Pixel first gens sell used for $200-$250? Most Iphone 7s are over $300 both on Ebay and Offerup. I mean, you can't look at a listing that's in 100-200 range that's still being bid on. Just look at offerup. It's hard to find a 7 in the mid 200s (you can get lucky but on average they're over 250).
Also, from most indications Pixel hasn't saved HTC, so i don't know what the future holds for either HTC in general, or the Pixel line. Google still hasn't figured out how to do this properly.
Don't compare a chromebook to an actual windows/mac laptop.
They're not the same just because a Pixel chromebook sells for an absurdly high price (1k last i checked) which is fucking laughable.
But none of this tackles the point i made why i stick with Apple. It's the overall integration between laptop, phone, watch, services. It's still the best out there. Not to mention Imessage, facetime, things that Google is just now trying to catch up on.
Fuck, most apps don't even come to android first, and some times when they do it's buggy as fuck.
Really? I think 4 years is the sweet spot. My phone has been perfectly fine (other than a battery change which all phones require at that point) and honestly if my phone wasn't lacking memory i could easily hold out. Maybe you don't feel the same way i do because of Androids roadmap and lack of utilization of old hardware? Apple is known for this though, their computers, phones, ipads, ipods they all have all been known to last.
However, I do question the viability of a phone past three years. Hardware at that point is what tends to break down, especially the battery. In addition, I've heard nightmare stories about people updating old iPhones, not only to have headline features disabled but severe performance degradation too. I think three years is a perfectly viable update schedule -- more than that is appreciated, but less than that is unacceptable, and I agree with that notion.
We're arguing over (at most) $50 here, I think I've proven my point.Just from a quick glance i'd actually say the average price difference is closer to $100 and that's not insignificant for most people.
This is tangential and not relevant to the conversation. The part of HTC that had a hand in the Pixel line is now fully owned by Google, and the Pixel 2 XL proves Google has no issues switching OEMs if there's an issue with HTC.It is relevant because it can show there's a problem with Google's overall strategy. There's so much fracturing already with Google's product line anymore of it is not a good thing regardless how they can transition.
I'm glad you mention integration because there's strengths there Google does well and Apple doesn't (as vice-versa.) Google Drive blows iCloud out of the water. When will Apple "catch up" to Google Photos? Google Maps? Chromecast?Yeah, look i agree with you there and that's why i pointed out Siri as huge problem for Apple. That level of integration Google has with those services is definitely a plus when you add them with Google's voice assistant. However, the other things can still be utilized in IOS so it diminishes the advantage a bit. You don't have Imessage and Facetime on Google. I know it doesn't mean much to some people but it is pretty big.
When will Apple get something like Project Fi or Voice? YouTube? Google Docs? Gmail? Nest's entire line of products? There's still many areas where Google integrates and Apple doesn't even bother, so it's difficult for me to accept "Apple's stuff is way more integrated" on its face. That only makes sense if by integrated you mean "exclusive to their hardware," but that's not really integration, it's lock-in.
I can say "Hey Google, show me my kitchen" and Google Home™ will throw my Nest Cam IQ™'s security feed onto my Chromecast™-enabled television. That's integration.
Google's "issue" in this area is that they don't pick favorites, and their services work well on all platforms. If anything, that hurts them, since if they suddenly switched to the "Apple way," you'd have a lot of sudden Android and Chrome OS conversions.
If you have a recent, personal anecdote about an an app like this, I'd love to hear it, because it hasn't really been true for years. I don't see you as a Snapchat type, either.Didn't fortnite not even come out for Android yet? Most major apps dont' come to android first, and from my memory (granted this is from a few years ago) facebook, insta, all these huge apps people care about were always slightly inferior on Android. But like you said the gap is closing, i'm sure of that, but the overall offering and ecosystem Apple has is still unmatched, regardless if the gap is closing. We're talking about RIGHT NOW.
If you prefer iOS and macOS, that's totally fine. But to imply you'd be lacking some kind of extra "magic" (the Apple version of Nintendo's "whimsy") by not picking Apple is totally false.
59 percent of the population also voted killary and look where that got usOh, i know. handoff is nice. I'll probably give Safari a go again after the update.
Assimilate bb ur missing out on handoff if you’re not using safari
Hey guys remember the 90s when browser updates were tied to OS updates? But it's not. Sometimes it is, sometimes it's not. Depends on how big the update is. And major browser updates are so fucking sparse anyways so what are you even complaining about?
Oh wait that's still the case for Safari. :crowdlaff
Taking a call on your phone, moving it to your computer, then moving it to your iPad, then back to your phone :lawd
well not on that level but taking it on your computer and then moving it to your phone yeah all the time. It's great.Taking a call on your phone, moving it to your computer, then moving it to your iPad, then back to your phone :lawd
There is no way anyone actually does this. :lol

i mean just look at that android google thread. people talking about 'we get 2 year support with a pixel" like wtf? 2 years of software updates? that's fucking laughable. i've had my iphone6 and macbook air for over 4 years and they're both working perfectly fine and if i didn't have the desire to upgrade i could stick it out with this phone for at least another year, and this laptop for a solid 3 more years if not more.
not to mention the resale value on apple products is much higher so you tend to recoup some of that "apple tax" anyways.
people in creative industries who justify buying macbook pros because they "need a powerful laptop for work" almost universally work with still media or do a bit of render light FCP at best.
anyone in animation or CG who genuinely needs a bit of grunt left the ship long ago.
X was the turning point for most people. industry is split now between people using premier because it's easy to use and has better AE functionality and avid spergs who stick with the film industry standards.
just being able to copy and paste between prem and AE is everything for me.
Generic Apple bitchit me

well it's not like the pro lets you use the power of that i9 without throttling the shit out of it anyway.
There's an "update" coming to "fix" that.
Once again Apple rides in with a fix for a big problem... that they themselves made.
Also, new title is much worse. :yeshrug
Soldering two more chips onto the board cannot possibly be that much more expensive. :doge 400$ for 512GB and 800$ for 1TB. You can get 2TB drives for that. :rofl
They solder the SSDs? The other ultrabooks just use a regular M.2 socket. If you're being super gentle with the bottom cover, it probably takes 5-10 minutes to change it yourself.Yeah, the entire thing is integrated on the board. Older Pros had an M.2 slot, I'm pretty sure, but not anymore. Tight margins. :marimo
Honestly, it would probably be cheaper if they just used socketed SSDs and the competition is just as thin (or thinner). Maybe it's to force you to overbuy initially but I think it would be in Apple's interest to take less mark-up on Macbooks to get people fully into their ecosystem. Everyone knows they make their real money on iPhones and the App store.
Also, new title is much worse. :yeshrug
Change it to "Apple's Basic Bitch Thread" :teehee
Well, they only offer SSDs now. While they're steadily falling, they're nowhere near HDDs yet. The higher the capacity, the higher the premium. This is my number 1 problem with Apple. Like why nickel and dime your goddamn customers.
That being said, the Apple tax is hefty.
The mark-up is worst for the 13-inch, it seems. For the cheapest 13-inch Pro, doubling capacity from 128GB (two 64GB chips, I assume; the board fits four) to 256GB adds 200$. 256GB M.2 SSD drives can be had for less than half that.

I guess. $750 price point. I"m down with that but then the fucking release date is mid to late Oct? WTF.I don't really get the 6.1 ratio though... why would they do that? Why not just make an Iphone X but without the glass? This leaves me a bit confused especially since there's apparently going to be an Xs+ model as well.
Because it's a cheaper screen both tech and size. They don't necessarily make OLED panels the same size / shape as LCD ones.
No small iPhone means my wife is going to go Android for sure.

I think it is finally time to upgrade my iPhone 5s. When my air conditioning died for a week, the extreme heat in my apartment seems to have overheated the battery causing it to expand and push the screen out. The protective case I have it in seems to be holding everything in place for now, but I'm thinking it's only a matter of time before it dies.
Actually it's weird, I haven't really experienced any slowdown issues with my 5s like I did with previous iphones. The only slow down issue I really have with it is loading different emoji keyboards in imessage, it sometimes takes a few seconds to switch between keyboards.Walk into a store and try the new phones then test how your phone feels.

Also, wow $270 for applecare on all X phones. Unbelievable. They're really going nuts aren't they.
BUt that dual slim slot with both being active is pretty darn cool and useful for me. I think the Xr it is.
Bah. I haven’t bought an expensive phone in ages, but I got an 8+ as a gift last year and really liked it so I just preordered the 256gb max in space gray.
Why would that be a bad thing? I’ll just save a bunch of my nudies in your camera.Bah. I haven’t bought an expensive phone in ages, but I got an 8+ as a gift last year and really liked it so I just preordered the 256gb max in space gray.
I got a 256gb space gray max, too. We better not get our phones confused when we’re ass fucking.
How much was it?$1249 I think. I’ll be honest. I didn’t really look so that I wouldn’t doubt myself before I purchased.
It's the same price for all X phones.
I wonder if AppleCare will be cheaper on the non-oled phones.

Right, since there is no super asshole maniac guiding the ship everyone seems content taking home nice paychecks and sitting on their asses.
For as much as he was an asshole (and it's a huge notable thing) as a person: Jobs could market shit like it wasn't shit and people would buy it. Apple post-him hasn't had the same "magic" as it had under him.

Steve deserves all the praise and criticism he's given, is the way I see it. One thing doesn't cancel the other out imo. He was the driving force of the company's spirit for the longest time during their most innovative periods.
(That said I still think the Newton had innovative features)

Apple faltered when they ousted Jobs in the 80s...not surprising that without him they've lost direction again. But for all the bitching and complaining that people do, tons of them still continue to purchase Apple products.

...Like 90% of games, and software?
Like, I like Linux. But 1) the UI is atrocious 2) the driver support is poor (but getting better, granted) and 3) it's built for servers, not desktop (see #1-2).
You can use it for Retropi just fine, but anything else? It's Windows or bust. But I don't know if Assy is HUEHUEHUE enough to run a bunch of Free to Plays through SteamPlay/WINE on Linux.
You can also have mac os on a pcI've had friends do that, way too much trouble.

When you actually look at the options that are out there though the price for the Air isn't that unreasonable. The only thing apple does that pisses me off is the memory thing, they price gouge you on that. It's the Apple "tax" bump that is annoying.
1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz, with 4MB L3 cache
128GB PCIe-based SSD
8GB of 2133MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory

If I can sell it in this country for a good price I will make the jump. Going to see what I can get for it.

Apple is showing a trade-in program for up to $1000 off the new Air, at least in 'Murica.
If it's not a big upgrade (sure doesn't look like it from those specs), why bother?well, because if I can still get a decent price for it now I might as well because waiting any longer and then I won't be able to.
fuck apple.
I upgrade to an XR.
My wife, of course wants a 256GB XS Max so I’m trying to figure out how much I could get for one of the kids.
Damn. I’ll buy one at that price.:mindblown
Question. I have my refund coming soon and I'm interested in getting a Macbook. But I'm not going to go high end.
So it seems my choice is between the new Air or the Macbook Pro 2018 without the touchbar.
It will mostly be used as a school labtop. I'm not worried about video games or anything. I just want something reliable, fast enough for word internet use, and so on, not too bulky, to use a version of itunes that is'nt shit, and in general have something the works with my Apple Tv, iphone, and ipad.
It kind of seems like the Air is the winner, but I am prone to opening a lot of tabs and shit. I've had cheap HP labtops and I get annoyed how slow even a internet browser can run.
So I guess I'm looking for a recommendation.

Doesn't the Surface Go suck in terms of speed/multi-tasking?
I also used my refund on Apple stuff - Bought an iphone se to replace my 6+ I got in 2015. The se is very cheap these days and I'm in the mood for a small phone. My pocket is going to feel so nice :)
Macs fucking suck.
I’m visiting my dad trying to use his stupid iMac to vpn into my work pc and get some shit done.
I’ve spent 2 hours just trying to get it working correctly. It boots slow as fuck, installing updates is slow as fuck, it failed on the updates at least once.
My mom has an iMac too. And it’s exactly the same piece of shit when I use it.
I haven’t seen a PC in the wild this fucked up since Windows XP, to be honest.
I'm very happy with that Bose model, although I never use them for phone calls.
They should be revealed at the ARM event on the 10thoh duh, for some reason i thought those were dropping today... i did get a leather case for my 12 pro, so all is not lost. :doge
gotta say i've been enjoying the meltdowns over the M1's performance #s. 😂
i wonder how john c dvorak is handling this news...
edit: actually checked his twitter and tbh i'm not surprised at the genre pivot :rofl
lol wow the butthurtIn fairness, someone at Apple needed to put a link directly to the formulation of that statement. There's bad faith arguing on the part of Apple's detractors, but this kind of claim is automatically incendiary.

A new encrypted protocol for Developer ID certificate revocation checks
Strong protections against server failure
A new preference for users to opt out of these security protections
We have never combined data from these checks with information about Apple users or their devices. We do not use data from these checks to learn what individual users are launching or running on their devices.

Which part? The overly-restrictive software installation policies of macOS aren't the issue (this time), it's the need to phone home (with the privacy-invasive logging that implies, along with sending the app developer's ID over plaintext so snoopers can see what app you open every time you open it) and hanging apps on opening if Apple is down or the connection is bad.
It's a bad idea implemented even worse.

Also, the dev ID doesn't show which app you open, just who developed the app.
QuoteAlso, the dev ID doesn't show which app you open, just who developed the app.
That's still problematic for a vast swath of apps, which are the only app by their developer. It's not defensible because it's less bad.
I don't understand the use of HTTP... the excuse that dev uses is "well it's a cert verification service, so how can it use HTTPS?" like it's some philosoraptor conundrum.. no it's not lol
You already have keychain or whatever storing your trusted root level certs... why in the world wouldn't you just hit OCSP with HTTPS and rely on the existing security architecture there? The fuck?

Weren't you trying to buy a smaller tablet though?
I'm interested to hear how that performs. Not really in the market for a tablet, but could be tempted by the right price/performance.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have seen "bad" pre-order results, indicating that Apple's positioning of the two new standard models may have failed, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are expected to be in stock in retail stores on their launch dates, "reflecting lackluster demand." As it stands, Kuo says that the pre-order results for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are worse than those of the third-generation iPhone SE and the iPhone 13 mini. He noted that Apple cut orders of both the third-generation iPhone SE and the iPhone 13 mini in the first half of 2022 due to low demand.
