The absurdity that this country is going to spend all day talking about and mourning the deaths of 3000 people 19 years ago while this country has been experiencing a 9/11 death scale event basically every 2-3 days for the past 6 months straight and there has been no national mourning and the president's response is "it is what it is"

Yup, and a lot of the same people who are posting on my FB about 9/11 are also the same people who are hardcore Trumptards and think Corona is a hoax.

Yea, but 9/11 killed a bunch of wealthy New Yorkers. Real Americans. Covid is mostly killing old people and minorities.

Real Americans until they complain about something else that would help them, like better jobs, or better housing.

The fact that at least 30K New Yorkers died this year to Coronavirus but the memorial for 3K people died 19 years ago shows what our priorities are. We can certainly at least acknowledge both.

They re-opened the universities.

I mean, you guys sometimes think that Trump is the only one following the 'Dummies guide to COVID-19' but it really is a sort of global thing.
The UK is in the biggest trouble of all of Europe right now , they've already cancelled Christmas and gatherings of more than 5 people.
With fines over a 1000 pounds for those that break the rules.

But there's also the general belief that "more testing = more cases". And indeed, we are doing more testing now.
Deaths and hospitalizations haven't moved much but more young people (18 - 25) have tested positive than before (mainly because the universities opened)

How are owners suppose to the live the lives they are accustomed to, if they have to shell out $13k every fourth time someone dies?  Congress needs to step in and protect businesses from the responsabilities of doing buisness.

Ah that sucks.  Hope she is Ok.  I'm pretty sure the worry about being in an out of hospitals is over, but if she has to say take more public transport or you have to go see her more etc.  then risk might increase.

But ya not looking forward to this new wave.  I've been back to the office for the last 2 months and i don't want to go back to WFH.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/national/kissimmee-star-motel/

Quote
The 17-year-old slammed her door and cranked the air conditioning as high as it would go, hoping that a final blast of cold air might make the 95-degree day more bearable. She then headed outside to the motel’s overgrown courtyard, a route that took her past piles of maggot-infested food that had been handed out by do-gooders and tossed aside by the motel’s residents. Several dozen of them were gathered by a swimming pool full of fetid brown water, trying to figure out their next move.

The motel’s owner had abandoned the property to its residents back in December, and now the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic was turning an already desperate strip of America — just down the road from Disney World — into something ever more dystopian. The motel’s residents needed to pay the power company $1,500.

    [...]

The aging motels along Florida’s Highway 192 have long been barometers of a fragile economy. In good times they drew budget-conscious tourists from China, South America and elsewhere, whose dollars helped to pay the salaries of legions of low-wage service workers; the people who made one of the world’s largest tourism destinations — “the most magical place on earth” — run.

In tough times, the motels degenerated into shelters of last resort in a city where low-income housing shortages were among the most severe in the nation and the social safety net was collapsing. Now they were fast becoming places where it was possible to glimpse what a complete social and economic collapse might look like in America.

Since that says reported in July, very good chance that the plunge below average is just an artifact of lagged reporting.

was just playing with the mortality.org data, and in 2020, 400K more people have died in the US than they had at the same point in 2019 through week 30 (July 20-26). That's about a full month of deaths

We’ve seen some stuff at the parks in the past few months, but nothing tops today’s scene at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, where a man was escorted out of the park for not wearing a mask.

Near the end of the video, he distinctly yells, “Remember the movie that came out at Walt Disney World? It was called A Bug’s Life! Remember Hopper? He said, ‘If one guy stands up, one ant stands up’!”, in a failed attempt to stir up a rebellion of sorts against face masks.

He is referencing two scenes in A Bug’s Life. The first is when Hopper, the film’s villain, talks about Flik trying to stand up to him. He states, “You let one ant stand up to us, then they all might stand up.” This is what happens at the end of the film, when the ants realize that there are more of them than there are grasshoppers as Flik says, “Ants don’t serve grasshoppers. It’s you who need us. We’re a lot stronger than you say we are.”

Witnesses say the man also yelled, “I’m not crazy! I have a wife and two kids!”

Area business has decided they don't care about the state mandates

Quote
To our Friends, Family, Patrons,

We are writing this statement to inform all of you that it is after much consideration and humility, we at No Surrender have decided to reopen our doors fully understanding the consequences and potential repercussions of such actions. We understand that our actions may draw criticism, frustration, and anger from some in our local community and the agencies tasked with the enforcement of public safety. However, just like we choose to stand by first responders and essential workers, by offering a safe and educational place for their children, we now choose to stand with our employees who can no longer support themselves on government assistance. We choose to help the nearly 100 applicants a day looking for work and a means to support their families. Lastly, we choose to help the community we love so much by providing a safe, clean, and secure environment away from unhealthy air, dangerous heat conditions, all while implementing a COVID-19 cleaning procedure that by far exceeds any other local entertainment center and CDC guideline.

A few of our safety procedures that go above and beyond what the CDC and county health department have recommended are as follow:

To enter into No Surrender you must do the following

All guests must submit to a voluntary hands-free thermal scan
You must have a face mask covering your mouth and nose

Meanwhile, the facebook page is filled with "my kids cant wear masks" and they respond "thats ok we understand"

:O
