https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-12-08/how-microsoft-s-halo-infinite-went-from-disaster-to-triumph?srnd=premium
Quote
The engine used to build Halo was one that 343 had based largely on old code from Bungie. Parts of the engine, a set of tools called Faber, became infamous at the studio for being buggy and difficult to use. Within engineering, there’s a concept known as “tech debt,” which refers to problems one puts up with because the previous programmers of a system chose quick, easy solutions over more sustainable ones. Faber’s code, some of which dated to the early 2000s, had so much debt that some 343 engineers mockingly referred to its “tech bankruptcy.”
Quote
The staffing at 343 was also unstable, partially because of its heavy reliance on contract workers, who made up almost half the staff by some estimates. Microsoft restricts contractors from staying in their jobs for more than 18 months, which meant steady attrition at 343.
Quote
Halo Infinite’s creative direction was also in flux until unusually late in its development. Several developers described 343 as a company split into fiefdoms, with every team jockeying for resources and making conflicting decisions. One developer describes the process as “four to five games being developed simultaneously.”
Quote
By the summer of 2019, Halo Infinite was in crisis mode. The studio decided to cut almost two-thirds of the entire planned game, leaving managers to instruct some designers to come to the office and do nothing while the studio figured out the next move.
(Image removed from quote.)
Once again JShrieker gets fed some PR line that's designed to reassure consumers that new product™ is actually good and publishes it as if it's some investigative masterpiece.

This whole article was basically written by Microsoft PR.

Game awards were pretty mehhhhhhhh outside the Alan Wake thing. Suicide Squad looked more fun than Avengers.

Where was Chrono Cross remake/remaster wtf.
Still no FF16...

Forspoken being May is still making FF16 2022 a mayyyyybe. SE Fiscal rpg releases - Q1 - FF Chaos / Babylon Fall, Q2 - Forspoken, Q3/Q4 - ???
We will see.

Xenoblade 3 is just about ready to reveal and BoTW2 could use some more info. I guess in a direct soon.

Don't forget, the biggest announcements were usually logo reveals.

I still don't understand why any company would use an awards show to reveal a new game. Conversely, I still don't understand why any viewers would want new game announcements during the awards show they're watching.

It wouldn't happen at the Oscars or the Emmys.

The Game Awards had 84 million viewers last year.

The Oscars had less than 10 million.

Also, the Game Awards have never pretended to be some kind of elite thing all about the art and only the art like the Oscars pretends to be. Nobody actually cares about the awards at the Game Awards. (Most Oscar viewers don't care about the awards either, they want to see celebrities.)

Only the Dorrito's pope thinks people care about the awards. In reality it's mini E3 where you hope to find one or two good announcements between 5 hours of Keighley cringe and latestage-capitalism (aka Accessibility award sponsored by Chevrolet®) that this infantine industry is stuck in.

The Game Awards is a trade show?   ???

Pretty sure it's just those dumb awards and WORLD PREMIERE WORLD PREMIERE WORLD PREMIERE videos- no actual industry meetings and such going on?

Off the top of my head:

Toyama's new game looks awfully crude atm, but has a cool setting/art-style.
Star Wars from David Cage will probably be fun. (one way or another  :doge)
Alan Wake 2 being a survival horror is good news.
Forespoken looks like some sort of shitty tech demo, still.
FF7 PC 79€  :lol :lol :lol
Space Marine 2, didn't play much of the first one since it made me motion sick, but i'll try this one.
Suicide Squad looks forgettable.
Sonic Frontiers looks "Sonic in Unreal Engine" tier.
Matrix Awakening doesn't look that impressive to me (i've seen just a little of it on YT).
ARC Riders looks cool, kind of like EDF with fancy graphics.
Hellblade 2 didn't look as impressive as a couple of years back.
Plague Tale looked like more of the same but with a crossbow (which is fine).

Still no FFXVI, what was that about being realistic with production, this time around?  ::)

What else? A couple of pointless cgi trailers, like Elden Ring and Wonder Woman, bunch of random indies?
Could've been worse, though of course if you watched the unfiltered 3+ hours thing, you have my sympathy.

Not sure why, but ARC Raiders kinda struck a chord in me.  It has some weird super old school  Star War vibe to it that I liked.

Hellblade 2...  And here I thought Sony was the king of walking simulators...   :doge

Saints Row is still looking like Saints Row, so that was good.  It's been on a steady but slow incline up the hype hill for me.

A Plague Tail 2... Will want to play, but won't be in a hurry to Day 1 it.

Other than that, Horizon and Elden Ring are still hype.  Could have easily saved 2 and half hours of my life by waiting till this morning to watch trailers.

Will try the Matrix demo tonight.  Supposedly it's an open world city you can romp around in; stealing cars and little QTE's.

Made me think of the ending of Siren where the main character runs around with a katana beating the shit out of the shibito while this plays. I love the trashy look of it.

Yeah definitely has Siren vibes, even the characters have similar proportions, with the kind-of-big heads.
And that Kowloon-style town, it's sort of underused, considering how iconic and atmospheric it is.

Regarding the Matrix thing, why the fuck isn't it on PC? (perhaps on the Epic Store) :maf

Suicide Squad looks alright mechanically, but I hate the aesthetic. The environments they've shown look super gamey, and don't match or favor the versions of these characters I usually picture in my head. Has that loud quippy bright neon bubblegum shit going on like Gunn's Squad, when i'd much rather have a more grounded take ala Arkham or the Snyderverse era. When they teased a Squad game way back in Arkham Origins, you'd never imagine the end result would look like this.

Just looks like it'll be a better version of GoTG.

The Matrix thing is available on Series S, so at least i'm downloading it there, should be better than Youtube anyway.

Rewatching the various trailers, the one that left the most positive impression on me, is Arc Raiders.
Amazing graphics (very impressive lighting, i loved those puffs of smokes and explosions, also beautiful retro-future aesthetics) and the shooting looks like a lot of fun.
Plus i like that Robyn song.

The problem i have with Suicide Squad is that it looks like it's going to be another "arena coop" thing like Avengers, Anthem, etc... that formula seems really hard to pull off.

Also i hate superheroes "squads".
I don't mind superheroes on their own (a Batman game, a Superman game, a Spiderman game, etc) but whenever you start to have team of various supes, like Justice League, Avengers etc, it just comes off as stupid to me.
Batman stops being gothic, and starts to have the super tech shit (or, more than usual), Spiderman needs the mech suit, and in general, it looks like a kitchen sink (the alien, the demigod, the scientific monster, all in one package).

Unreal Engine 5 is very impressive, hopefully they turn that Matrix thing into a real game at some point.

Also, Max Payne with such an engine  :whew

It's finally starting to look like next gen, about 2 or 3 years behind schedule though.

That’s stupid.

It’s a range of colors, but no one owns multiple PS5 units. Taken on their own, the only desirable color is black.

The other colors will be discounted within 60 days.

No gunmetal, carbon fiber, matte black, silver…?

That was outsourced to some minor Ubi studio in India, IIRC, Ubisoft Toronto is a bigger studio.
Given how sudden this announcement was, i'm assuming it's just a move to get some good press back, after their NFT shit.
Also before they get another shit-storm, once they announce the Splinter Cell open world GAAS thing.

you get a free 10hrs of 2042 with gamepass. I've put hundreds of hrs into BF4 and 5 alone lately. do love it usually, but I only made it 4 hours. it's not even the bugs, though I came across a few. game just doesn't feel good, the loop is depressing, there's no soul to the presentation. the vehicles all feel like shit to drive, why does the quad bike feel like a boat? lmao, environments are sterile shooting galleries with no character, the scenario is about as generic future pmc warfare bollocks as you could possibly get, guns just feel like generic slightly future weapons - I honestly prefer the "boring" ww2 weapons in V. nothing makes me want to play it again. usually I find bf games to be greater than the sum of their parts but 2042 is a turd in its current state and I don't see that changing.

Nobody is going to want your shit NFT game back, because they have zero value.
Hypothetical value, doesn't equate to real value.

The problem with NFTs is that they have zero inherent value, and so they're entirely tied to how much of a sucker the eventual buyer is going to be.
You can smell the same desperation you smell on pyramid scheme people, in those trying to (re)sell you their NFTs.

All collecting is fundamentally dumb, but collecting physical things answers to a more primordial need to own and touch things, at least.
The problem with NFTs is that they're so immaterial and abstract, that the concept needs to be explained 50 times before you can even understand what it is you're buying.
That is not exactly the type of immediate power, needed to tap into that lizard brain.
That's why, even as a speculative tool, i find them pretty weak.
