For what its worth despite all the talk about how the Lakers are struggling, they are pretty much on roughly the same win loss pace as last year.

Last year they went 57-25 with a .695 win percentage.

Currently they are 37-16 with a .698 win percentage.

I think people are more concerned with the Lakers' record against top teams.  As we've learned from Lebron's last two years in Cleveland, it's something that can't be overlooked.

oh yeah, they don't suck. But they don't have a bye to the WCF like they basically did last year. They'll have to be tip-top to get past the Spurs IMHO.

Sloan is a great coach. Utah isn't particularly a free agent hot spot but he always did well with what he had, and of course the organization made some great draft picks. Seems like a good guy too. Didn't his wife die kinda recently?

Isn't he a notorious asshole?

Interesting that Deron Williams is now going to be The Guy Who Forced Out Jerry Sloan.  He's suddenly going to be considered a coach-killer by a lot of people, whatever the reality is.

who ya got, Stoney?

The Cs are just reeling from all these injuries, but I am sure they will be up for this one due to importance in the standings and their desire to erase the loss to the Lakers. I have a feeling Miami will take this one anyway. Mike Miller is starting to look like himself again, which gives them a lot of different looks.

The Celts seem pretty banged up and they do seem to have the Heats number. But I'll go with the heat just because I have feeling they will come into this one pumped up and trying to redeem/prove themselves where as I think Boston is just kinda coasting a bit to the All-Star break so they can rest and start the second half of the season.

Rondo is so awesome :lol

He just gets to places on the court he has no business being. It's amazing how often he just sneaks up behind people on inbound plays and grabs the ball and such. He is a highly disruptive force on the court, generally.

Kids In 'Scared-Straight' Program Visit Horrifying Cleveland Cavaliers Practice

Quote
Whitney said that early on, some critics questioned whether the shock tactics were truly effective. Visiting teens often cried when the reality of their situation struck them, sometimes from the moment they were instructed to put on their mandatory Cleveland Cavaliers T-shirts. Many were nearly struck by the endless barrage of mishandled basketballs, and there were questions as to whether attending the Cavaliers practices put the youths at even greater risk than they had been before. But the vast majority of participants displayed improved behavior after seeing the fundamentally unsound losing path their lives could take them down.

"And in those rare cases where seeing a practice doesn't work, we take them to an actual Cavaliers game," said Whitney, explaining that it is a last resort used only with teens who are hardest to reach. "By the end of the first quarter, even the toughest kids are begging to leave and promising they'll never get into trouble again.

Meanwhile, the Bobcats continue their inexplicable ownership of the Lakers. They've won 8 of the last 10 against the former-Hornet Kobe Bryant. Tonight, they won by 20.

Miami still frustrates me. I still think their offense against good team can devolve into basically one on 5. Halfway through the season and despite their good record they still have that problem.

They basically feast on poor teams and struggle against good teams.

28-2 vs below .500 competition. (best in the league)
12-13 vs above .500 competition.

that second number is the worst out of all the "elite" teams.

That's a fair point. The teams with good team D can put the brakes on them pretty good. I still like Boston to beat them in the playoffs but it'd be a hell of a series.

What's weird is that they have all bought into team D in a big way, but are still struggling with the team O.

I'm pretty sure Amaechi had an anecdote or two in his book which painted Sloan as pretty spiteful towards him.  My impression (and judging people I'll never meet is the essence of sports fandom) is that Sloan did a lot of stuff which gets excused in the context of being a coach but which would get you fired from ~98% of real world jobs, or at least recommended for counseling.

Hence PD saying "old school" as what I assume is a euphemism for "frequently enraged and verbally abusive".

Not to say Sloan's out of the ordinary in the context of his profession, but "he seemed nice" strikes me as a giant stretch.

Well yea, lots of the older coaches were like that. Larry Brown, Sloan, Pat Riley, etc. Tough love and hard practices. I tend to tune out when players today complain about coaches. They were babied through high school, college, and expect the same treatment in the NBA. When I played AAU it was hilarious seeing the best players literally get pampered out of fears they'd jump to another team.

Quote
BOSTON—Celtics shooting guard Ray Allen told reporters he made a terrifying discovery Wednesday, stumbling across a genetic research laboratory located deep beneath the TD Banknorth Garden and filled with thousands of test-tube "Big Baby" Glen Davises.

"At first I thought some of them were deformed or genetic mutations," Allen added. "But I seem to remember Glen was just weird-looking like that as a kid."

"I just can't understand why the Celtics would need or want so many Big Babies that act and play exactly the same way," Allen said. "He's okay, but you'd think that with all this advanced technology they would at least try to improve him a little—maybe make Big Babies that are taller, better shooters, and a little less annoying in the locker room."

how long till the dunk contest

The All-Star stuff starts at 5 pm est (right now actually) But the dunk contest is later so it's probably closer to an hour or an hour and a half away from that part.

Edit: whoops add three hours to all that stuff. I was looking at the wrong time zone. So it starts at 8:00 PM EST.

Dunk contests just don't work for me. Insane dunks during games, those are impressive.

If someone brings out Shawn Bradley and posterizes him, that would be worthy of a 10. Dunk over someone actively trying to stop you.

You know what would make this really fun? If the other contestants were trying to stop you dunking. Imagine Griffin trying to dunk over McGee without a charge, that would be fun city. I think DeRozan's 2nd dunk was probably the best, although it looked a lot better in slo-mo. Blake was disappointing.

so lame. I've seen high school kids jump over cars - over the ROOF of cars. Some of Blake's attempts were much better than his makes. The only one I really liked was the VC arm-through-the-basket dunk. Overall it was a great contest though - everybody put one a good-to-great show.
