Heat-Hawks looks like more of a game!

Might be fun to see what Lin can do if he gets the ball occasionally. He's been seriously marginalized this season. Then again he can't shoot or finish the way he did last season, presumably due to the injury.

I was just going to make a post last night about how basically the Knicks have gotten the better of the deal so far. Felton has been playing a lot better than lin so far in the season.

The comparison is badly skewed by 1) Lin coming off injury and suddenly having to give the ball to Harden and play a weird role; and 2) Felton recovering from being a fatass and being given the keys to the NYC offense (Melo still uses a lot of possessions but he's no longer a black hole). Reality is both teams are happy with who they have.

Mark Jackson is coaching GS right? Seems like one of the few tv analysts/forme players who is having some success as a coach, although admittedly I don't follow NBA basketball much

Everyone looks lackluster when he's taking his 25 shots

Lakers just baffle me. I logically understand the issues of that team. Lack of depth, outside shooting, etc. But they still shouldn't be this bad. This seems far worse than the way the Heat started off that first year.

Maybe the one the press hasn't really focused on yet is terrible, terrible defense on the perimeter despite Mr Perennial All NBA Defensive Team there. Kobe hasn't guarded anyone in a good 5 years, Morris hasn't a clue, Nash won't help, and Dwight, while he can protect the rim, isn't agile or fast enough to get out to the perimeter then recover.

But I agree. It seems like there is some negative synergy that is making them even worse than you'd expect a team with just Kobe and half a good center to be.

If you put LeBron on that team they'd be the best team in the west. Seems like more evidence that Kobe doesn't make his team mates better. It also tells me Dwight Howard is a joke who needs to go to a big man camp.

i get the feeling its the laker fans that make certain people hate nba-gaf

Anyways, I didn't really understand the D'Antoni system with a roster that old and that lacking in a bench. Even wtih Nash, I'm not sure how they keep the pace up.

Also, Alvin Gentry has already gotten a vote of confidence from Suns ownership. That's normally a death kiss for a coach. I think he's a damned good coach though. Probably better for the Lakers than D'Antoni is. I would love him on the Kings.

All a moot point anyway of course. Pau is coming back, Nash is coming back, they still got the best of the deal by far with Dwight vs Bynum this season...all they need to do is focus hard on building some kind of bench before the trade deadline and they'll be at worst a terrifying 8th seed.

apropos of nothing - Did anyone else actually hear Jeff Van Gundy say during the loss to the Knicks that the Nets 'really missed Brook Lopez's interior defense and shot-blocking'?

I seriously did a spit-take, although Lopez has improved somewhat in those areas this year.

I respect Kobe as a great b-ball player at times but he's certainly not one of the superstars I root for in the league. Way too arrogant for my tastes.  But hey, I like Lebron and the Heat so glass houses and all that.

I was a Kobe fan back when he came off the bench, but he kinda lost me after the Shaq flap (not that Shaq was innocent of course). He has never been able to convince me subsequently that he cared about winning half as much as about looking good and bathing in individual glory. He also throws people under the bus way too often to be any kind of good teammate or leader IMHO. He has been fun as hell to watch for a long time though, love to root against him.

If I have to say something nice about LeBron, it's that he's resisted the temptation to throw guys like Drew Gooden and Daniel Gibson under the bus, even though he easily could.

because everyone loves it so much when you respond to Kobe hate with LeBron hate

Back when I had cable I loved the chemistry Charles and the gang had, and I always assumed someone like Shaq could be added and fit perfectly. But I haven't seen any TNT basketball since he joined. I said wow. Amazing how far the stat heads have come in basketball.

Grizzlies hire John Hollinger
Updated: December 13, 2012, 7:30 PM ET

John Hollinger, a fixture of ESPN.com's coverage of the NBA for the past eight seasons and one of the leaders in basketball's rising statistical analysis movement in the past decade, is leaving his role as a columnist to become the vice president of basketball operations for the Memphis Grizzlies.

Best known for hatching the formula behind every player's Player Efficiency Rating (PER) -- which attempts to quantify player performance through the use of an all-in-one rating -- Hollinger will begin work as a senior executive in the Grizzlies' basketball department next week.

"It's incredibly difficult to leave ESPN, but the chance to work for an NBA team and the Grizzlies' new ownership was an irresistible opportunity," Hollinger said Thursday.

Hollinger was recruited to the Grizzlies by new controlling owner Robert Pera and CEO/managing partner Jason Levien, who have made upgrading Memphis' analytics department one of their front-office priorities. The Grizzlies also hired Stu Lash on Thursday as their director of player personnel and basketball development.

"We are thrilled to have John and Stu join the Grizzlies," Levien said in a release. "Both of these individuals will provide innovative and unique perspectives that bolster the organization's future."

Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that the move won't change the status of Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace but added that Hollinger will be a "prominent voice in the team's front office beyond providing statistical analysis."

Hollinger, 41, founded the website "Alleyoop" in 1996 to launch his online career as a basketball sabermetrician and authored a series of books originally known as the "Pro Basketball Prospectus" and later titled "Pro Basketball Forecast."

He went on to work for The Oregonian newspaper's online site (OregonLive.com) and served as the NBA editor of Sports Illustrated's online site (SI.com) before joining ESPN.com in February 2005.
