Definitely. I was also surprised at the feeling of being starved of Tony's internal thoughts when he and his therapist had a falling out. I love those scenes between the two.

Then, in the second season, they give you a glimpse of how these american gangsters are perceived in their own motherland.

And you thought the Germans were classless pieces of shit.

I tried to get into it, but I just don't get the appeal.

Am I the only one who noticed the dialogue was significantly more...flowery and heavy handed than usual? Some really odd lines throughout

Illythria omg :bow

I doubt she's 100% in support of Glaber. She realizes he is her meal ticket basically, and while they both share common enemies eventually old wounds will fester again

That's not an inconsistency. They're both monsters. They've had romans killed and swept it under the rug before (Licinia, for one; Illythia's dad for another).

She's playing him, because they're playing each other. They've found common ground in their madness. Not inconsistent at all. It's also not as big of a deal as the first season as there are different players involved -- Glaber has higher position than Batiatus ever had, and thus more influence. He can easily hide murders, whereas Batiatus had to pull more strings to make sure things were kept hidden.

I thought the dialogue in this episode was amongst the best in the whole series.

And I have absolutely no idea how you could say that.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
You do remember Illythia cut off the escape route of a ton of Romans in season 1 right? She's been a monster for a long time.

On top of that, Lucretia planned it all so it would happen this way -- she essentially forced both Seppia's and Illythia's hand, and turned them into different people entirely, as fluid as the water that reflected on Seppia towards the beginning of the episode.

I agree that they both are murderers and capable, thats not my issue. My issue is with what little regard for law and planning they did this. Nor do I expect this ever to be mentioned or anyone questioning what happened to the pair of siblings. Every murder previously was a point of peril now it's just whatevs.

I don't understand the criticism. How hard would it be for Glaber to blame the murder on escaped slaves? It's not like anyone from Rome is going to come to the city to investigate

It makes Batiatus' and Lucrecia scheming when they did similar acts look ridiculous in hindsight. It's classic DragonBallZ level stuff where Trunks just destroys Freeza to show he is so much better than everyone who just struggled to defeat him an episode ago. (kinda)

They established previously such acts are not to be taken lightly,
spoiler (click to show/hide)
surely there is a new magistrate also how lazy is it to murder your problems away?(Without repercussion) Before there would be some actual scheming to get rid of someone, not taking anything away from Illyhia's plotting up till there, that was great. The end result was weak as hell, combined with last weeks heavily predictable episode I feel the writing is going down the toilet. I love the show, but these last two have been asking me to swallow shit im not willing to

It really doesn't. Someone already explained that Batiatus held a lower position. Glaber is from Rome and commands his own army. Batiatus trained gladiators for a living. Huge difference in what they can do and get away with.

I mean following this logic why didnt Glaber just kill Verenius? Why didnt Illythia not just kill Glaber? If murder is going to be made a valid resolution to a problem it looks god damn ridiculous if others do not use it when it's so simple, easy and available

In fairness, I love the show but the last two episodes has made me want to rain dance on the writers heads. I still think it's good entertainment and I'm sure the finale will be spectacular and I'll love it.

"Being from Rome" isnt a valid excuse. Even Ceasar (in the show Rome) couldn't outright murder his enemies. He has to outmaneuver and out-strategise them. The resolution to that plot thread does not sit well at all with me

Who could possibly learn the truth? If Glaber was pulling this shit in Rome I would agree with you. But he is literally the highest and only government official in Capua. Every time someone important visits him, they come from Rome.

The Caesar comparison makes little sense because he spent most of his political career in Rome with eyes everywhere. Also Caesar was already a heavily watched figure, his enemies were always on his heels; he couldn't get away with much of anything without someone seeing. Glaber is basically ruling a small city, living in a home isolated from the rest of the city with no high born neighbors

Capua was actually the second most important city in the Roman empire, not far behind Rome at all. Just because they choose to focus on the ludis doesnt mean shit isnt going down outside its gates. I'm pretty sure there would be quite a few big wigs in town at any given time. Everytime a visitor from the senate visits they mention Glaber is not in high standing with the rest of his fellow praetors, knowing that one can deduce there is eyes on him as there's always someone jockeying to usurp those above their standing.

I'm going to let this debate die here, I'm probably reading too much behind the curtains, something the writers I'm sure did not intend nor wants it's audience to think about.

Additionally please understand that a lot of my sentiments comes from a place of extreme butthurt at my favorite new character being thrown to the lions.

I guess my final point is the same as the first: given the chaos in the city, it would not be hard to fake her death as murder at the hands of revolting slaves. Maybe she was ambushed on  the road, or at her brother's house, or anywhere. Unless you transport the cast of The Wire into Spartacus, there's no way anyone could prove Glaber's story wrong.

Hell, Verenius came to Glaber after hearing about Illythria's disappearance. Yet when she actually showed up his entire plan was destroyed. He couldn't prove she was abducted despite multiple people presumably seeing Illythria stagger into town.

Season 3 of Lost is pretty weak so far.  The opening felt cheap compared the awesome opening of season 2.   Seasons 1 and 2 were mostly great.

It's dumb how they keep trying to play up this "good guys" thing when the first encounter was Ethan trying to kill Charlie.  And Ethan seemed strong, like he was juicing, but now it's like "nope regular guy."

On the upside there's more Desmond and some of the bad characters are gone.

Yea the first 1/2 of season 3 is a slog.  But then you enter the most consistent run of the entire series starting with the last 5 or so episodes of season 3 and the entirety of season 4.

Then you can stop watching.  But tragically you will not.
