About halfway through the first Arrow season the producers start to figure out what the show should be. Over time, the CW soapy stuff gets toned down, more DC characters show up, and some of the secondary characters improve.

I'm like 6 episodes into S1 of Arrow and I'm enjoying it. It's not GOOD but it's fun in a spot-the-DC-reference sort of trashy way.

TVC, we need to talk about the utter bullshit that was last week's Ru Paul's Drag Race elimination.
Last weeks, or this week's? Because if it was this week, when

The Tortelli's is the worst spin off all time, which is funny cause it was spun off a show that gave us one of the best spin offs of all time.
Lol..    I've never seen it. Was surprised when it popped up. It was the only vid of him stutterin'

Naw, he can just go re-watch Fletch.

while i cant hate on mai waifu, that was a weak ass finale. instead of doing anything crazy they just set everything back to the way it was earlier in the season. if s4 continues the same old plotlines instead of doing something crazy and new im gonna have to bail fast.

Finished Brooklyn Nine Nine last night. I've gone from "meh" on the show to laughing out loud several times an episode. Can't wait for season 2. Apparently the series won Golden Globes for both "best comedy" and for Samberg as "best actor," but is not doing well in ratings.  :-\

I watched about the first 9 or 10 episodes of it. It's okay. I mean I like that its a throwback to sort of a dumb simple ensemble comedy. And while I love Andre Braugher, I just couldn't tolerate Samberg. He's playing a role where you need a lot of charm and charisma. Like a Bill Murray type or Bruce Willis when he originally appeared on Moonlighting. Samberg instead just comes off as annoying. But that's strictly an opinion thing. I like the rest of the cast. But its hard to like the show a lot for me when Samberg is so much the focus of it.

it's a pure nighttime soap like Revenge at this point. In fact, their problems are basically mirrors of one another.

Brooklyn Nine Nine reminds me a bit of Scrubs, in that I probably should hate the lead male character, in fact maybe I do hate him, but still love the show.

JD is tolerable due to Turk. I re-watch random episodes and it's amazing how much of a dick JD is. Especially when he ruins Elliot's relationships because he kinda sorta maybe thinks they should get together.

I haven't watched enough of scrubs to comment on that one but for me its not necessarily a character being unlikable which is my problem. In fact I would argue television has the opposite problem. Too few unlikable characters and too many wanna be good guy characters that don't actually resemble real life.

It's more when the character doesn't acknowledge that a character has dickish traits and wants you to treat them like a lovable rogue or something. Some times its how they portray the character. And sometimes its the actor not being able to pull it off. It varies from situation to situation.

For example to pull a random show out of nowhere I think Modern Family is a fairly vanilla show that is overly saccharine. I think it is able to get away with it though because all the actors are cast appropriately. They elevate the very average/below average material

The new Boondocks episode had some laughs but didn't feel like The Boondocks at all. Aaron McGruder leaving really did take away a lot.

I kind of felt the same, but it is just one episode, done after a very long hiatus. I'm hoping it's just a case of the people left making the episodes taking a bit to get back into the groove.

It's always going to take something away from a show when the guy who has the vision is replaced. I'll check it out eventually but the whole McGruder thing put a sour taste in my mouth for what was essentially one of my favorite programs.

Yep. McGruder has a very specific worldview that I can't see anyone duplicating.

Exactly.

Which is not to say I won't watch the show and maybe even enjoy it. But yeah it won't be the same. Community had the same issue. That show is very up and down show even in the best of times but when you removed Dan Harmon the show felt completely different (worse). You can have the same characters doing what appears to be the same stuff but the core changes when you change the person who gives it a vision and an outlook.

McGruder is very cynical, very prickly, and very smart. That comes across in the product in ways you can't immediately diagnose but you feel it.

Like I said before. You are entitled to that opinion. I just don't agree with you at all. (Which as always is fine. I prefer honest difference of opinion to fake agreement)

I've liked all the seasons of the show. It's been one of my favorite comedies/satires its entire run. There is no one period for me that was signficantly worse than any other like it appears to be for you.

The seasons are different in ways. But all enjoyable for me.

Haven't seen the new episodes so I can't comment on their quality overall. Just saying I'm pretty sure this season will feel more different relative to the others.

I'm not sure I know what modern parody is or what you are specfically definng it as. For me the other seasons have the same stuff which I don't have a problem with. The very first episode of season 2 is satirizing soul plane in specific and modern bad black movies in the general.

The second episode of season 2 features an extended Usher parody video sequence.
