I'm guessing my Braves will once again be good enough to win the division and lose in the first round. Oh well.
-
First winning season since 2012 for the White Sox, let's go 8)
-
NL east is gonna be brutal this year, Mets, Braves, Nats will be the top 3 teams and any of them could take the division, Phillies will hang around all year and the Marlins will suck as usual.

:girlaff
Seriously though, I honestly don't see it, they have the Cano albatross contract, No real 3B and their outfield outside of Conforto is suspect at best. And Edwin Diaz looks like he is broken.
I have the Mets around 75 wins.
-
Mariner's got this.
One of two teams PECOTA gives a 0% chance to win it all!
The basic hopes for the Mariners this year are:
Marco Gonzales stays good
One of JP Crawford/Mallex Smith/Dan Vogelbach finally improves into a 3ish win player
At least one of Shed Long/Kyle Lewis shows the ability to be a 2+ win player in the near future
Evan White shows he can hit at the major league level
Someone out of the Justus Sheffield/Justin Dunn/Erik Swanson trio sticks in the rotation
Logan Gilbert graduates
Jared Kelenic, Julio Rodriguez, George Kirby and Cal Raleigh all stay on track
Noelvi Marte continues to show promise
In other words, get used to checking Arkansas and Everett box scores

Streamer and PECOTA have the Mets as the fifth best team in baseball. Diaz will be fine, he still had swing and miss stuff he was just very unlucky and the Mets defense certainly didn’t do him any favors. Defense should be about the same but I expect Diaz is more likely to look like his usual self than what we saw last year. As for third base that’s McNeil’s position this year. Cano is an albatross sure, but he started to put it together in the 2nd half last year.
Biggest issue last year was the bullpen, Mets relievers blew 27 saves and they still managed 86 wins. This year they added Betances and if Familia and Diaz pitch even close to their career average the bullpen should be a strength as well.
Cespedes is the major wild card imo, if he comes back hungry and looking to earn a new contract next season he could make the lineup extremely formidable.
All that said they are still the Mets and knowing how cheap the Wilpons are they’ll probably get their hands on a Boeing 737 max to fly the team around on and it’ll crash on the way back from spring training :doge

my nats :rejoice

The Mets will struggle to a .500ish record. They won't truly suck or excel, in classic Mets fashion. They'll just sort of be there, like that vaguely disappointing middle child that always seems like they're about to get their life together and inevitably fucks it up. In another 3-4 years, they'll have 1-2 seasons where they're pretty good, making everyone think they're a relevant franchise again, before once again reverting to form.
That's it. That's the Mets way.
-
I will say that while the Nats have obviously been way more relevant and a bigger genuine threat recently, beating the Mets still gives me greater pleasure, because old habits die hard and their fans are truly delusional. Watching Mets fans go through the Sisyphean task of a 162 game season every year where they gradually come to realize that once again their team is still the same old Mets is one of the few remaining joys I have in sports or life.

Nah that’s not the Mets way at all. If they’re gonna end up around .500 it’ll be with a 12-15 game winning streak followed by a month where they only win 4 games like June or July. Perhaps they can challenge their recent record for fastest team to go from 10 games over .500 to 10 games under .500 :lol

Losing the coach that built the team up from a 100 loss team is not a slap on the wrist.
I never said anything about defending the Astros in that post.
My post is all about SHITTING on the people that have gone on a goddamn witch hunt towards the team. Going to baseball sites and talking baseball with ANYONE not an Astros or Red Sox fan is MISERABLE. Go to r/baseball and it is a goddamn circlejerk and ANYONE with an Astros is downvoted into the negatives. Non-Astros fans have treated the team, its fans (who are fans and HAVEN'T cheated), like complete dirt drilling down conspiracy theory after conspiracy theory. Got Yankees bitching about how the Astros ruined their careers. Now pitchers on other teams threaten to BEAN Astros players and deliberately throw 100 mph balls at the players. No. Fuck YOU.
I repeat: I want your teams RAPED.

Have the others that harass the Astros and Astros fans moved on? What about this thread title? They certainly haven't moved on.
Get fucked.

People still referencing perhaps the biggest scandal in the history of baseball that was uncovered in the off-season before the upcoming season is "harassing the Astros"? lol
No, not at all. I've detailed what harassment entails in this thread. Sorry you choose to ignore it.

Nah. 2020 you're getting FUCKED.
This must be so hard for you. If only you had an easier situation, like being a fan of the team who lost to the Astros in the World Series, or owning the jersey of the ace pitcher who got shelled and mentally broken when the Astros knew what pitches were coming.
Fuck your ace pitcher and stop pretending the Astros cheated every game. I hope he's even more mentally broken when the Astros fuck tear him up even more in 2020.
-
MLB should have vacated the 2017 WS win and suspended the players implicated for 50 games which would have put a stop to the ongoing speculations.
Manfred could not have handled it any worse.
Justin Turner's comments were straight fire.
-
It's so sad that off-season baseball discussion has become almost unreadable (as opposed to merely nonexistent).
-
If only you'd gotten to spend the last couple months of 2017 completely numb and unable to feel joy in any capacity, Cindi. That would have been much easier than having to read some shitty posts in comments sections.
If this really is about losing the WS 2017 you would also raise a stink about losing in 2018 to the Red Sox who is also under investigation for cheating.
But fucking crickets.
Nah, you say jack SHIT about the Sox because YOU'RE FUCKING BUTT HURT and you can't ever take it back.
Two years in a row. Your team are LOSERS.
You talk about being fair but keep talking smack. We both know your team has the bigger market and it would impact MLB far more if it found out Dodgers were implicated of cheating.
Oh wait, they were. It was a league wide thing and yet you still only focus on the Stros. You lost to the Sox in 2018 - also cheaters, under the same staff person who brought the bullshit to the stros - and yet you still shit completely on the Stros and Stros fans with zero impartiality while claiming to be fair.
Fuck the Dodgers.
Your team are LOSERS.

You literally brought up harassment and then said "What about the thread title?" in the next sentence, same paragraph..
You really gonna blame me for assuming that's the type of harassment you meant?
why don't you just fucking ask?
I wasn't saying that harassment. He said to get over it. Are the others in the thread over it? clearly not because the thread title even mentions the Astros.
But I'm supposed to get over it and just take it.
Nah.
-
If this ire we were aimed at multiple teams involved we wouldn't be having this problem.
Instead we have Dodgers and Yankees fans thinking their teams are above cheating. :sabu
You can say,"we don't have official ruling on the red sox cheating" but that didn't stop you from calling REVOKE THE ASTROS WORLD SERIES WIN for MONTHS before the official case ruling in January.
If this were really about cheating you'd also shit on the Sox. But you don't.
You don't because you know that the Astros will still be contenders. You're butt hurt and you can't admit that your teams are fucking LOSERS and you're drowning in your cum flavored tears. Drown in that shit.

lol, several players came out and accused the Astros of cheating, putting their name on it, something that has never been seen before in baseball. As far as we know it was the most elaborate cheating scheme in the history of the sport.

Does not make harassment of the Astros and Astros fans okay.
Also, multiple people have also implicated that this problem goes beyond the Astros.

Kind of funny that you're talking about harassment while telling me to drown in my cum-flavored tears.

"I know from first hand accounts that the Yankees, Dodgers, Astros, and Red Sox all have used film to pick signs," he wrote, per NJ Advance Media's Brendan Kuty. "Just want you guys to know the truth. I personally think it's a tool in a tool belt to pick signs, but if we are going to be punishing people for it. Don't half ass it."
"As far back as 2015, the Yankees used the video replay room to learn other teams' sign sequences, multiple sources told The Athletic. Other teams likely were doing the same. Sources said the Red Sox began doing it no later than 2016.

I never said anything like that, and I'm sure the guy wasn't serious anyway. I certainly don't condone statements like that.
I'm not sure you're understanding what it feels like to have watched your team give up two 4 run leads in the same game, a game which if your team had won they'd have ended up the champions, to have watched your star pitcher, who already (and up to that point somewhat unfairly) had a reputation for postseason choking in spite of dominating the regular season like no other pitcher in a decade, give up a tying grand slam and then load the bases for another tying grand slam a couple innings later, and then two years later you find out that the team that did that to you was sign-stealing on those very pitches.
Forget about us fans. Imagine how Kershaw and Darvish feel.
And I'm not sure you know what it feels like watch your team go from 100 loss seasons, have a record 1 in a million or something stat flood that destroyed homes of people you grew up with, fucked your neighborhood, destroyed your city. Then you win your only world series that year and what it means to you. And then you got some butt hurt jackal shitting your team, your fellow fans, going into conspiracy theories, harassing players social media, harassing REPORTERS social media, brigading fans private spaces while they get over their disappointment while turning away a blind eye to ANY alternative viewpoint while casting every single Astros player as a villain. Talking about buzzers without one substantiated claim, and saying the Astros deserve their world series trophy vacated.
Meanwhile other fans have ZERO empathy towards your situation and just clown you.
Nah. Fuck you and fuck every team not the Astros. I hope the Astros gang fuck all of your teams and every Stros fan feels similar.

shut up ho
The Braves got caught running an international talent pool signing scam and got TANGIBLY HARSHER PENALTIES including a lifetime ban for our GM and actual forfeiture of signees, then I'm sure everyone and their mother talked shit about us and I didn't care. We won the division next year.
The main difference is OUR PLAYERS DIDN'T ACTIVELY CHEAT TO FUCK UP GAMES. At the end of the day, you can't change that fact, and your players didn't get any fucking penalties for it.
I didn't run my fucking mouth when the Braves got popped. Shut yours, take your L.

I do think the players involved should have penalties even if they're off the Astros roster.

The only reason this is an issue is that Manfred botched the punishment.
Anger is an emotion fueled by unfairness. Could not punish the players? Strip the title.
But no players were punished. They got immunity. And now are getting protected from frontier justice. It's a joke. That's why all these opposing players are angry.
Manfred really sucks. He's a classic out of touch suit. His mealy mouthed interviewed was the weakest shit I've seen from any Commish, including that loser Selig and perennial clown Godell.

I know the Astros are cheaters. I'm very much disappointed in them. They ruined the one championship we have. And if any other teams cheated they should face the same consequences. Fuck them all. Even if my beloved Mariners did it, which would be sad cause we're bad at everything and it didn't help. :lol

Someone needs to make a skit where they show the Astros playing baseball in August and every player is coming to the plate in full body armor. There's a plastic bin next to the first base coach where they remove it and place it into if they get on base.

Yeah, this is gonna be a rough season. Your team got caught (and I still hope that any other team that did the same gets punished as well), better hunker down cause it's gonna be a bumpy ride.
edit: I read through some of the comments on the article you posted and there is some serious cognitive dissonance going on in there, it's not very different from some of the stuff you'd see on r/TheDonald.

Red Sox made a great trade. Corona Virus may end the season and the Dodgers won't get to even use Mookie Betts. :doge

What are the odds that this season gets cancelled before it even starts?

Don’t think they will cancel, I think they will shorten the season and start in May.

Maybe they'll just play in empty stadiums. It was already done last year by the Blue Jays.

Manfred is a little bitch, no way these owners would allow the season to be suspended. Empty stadiums would be as far as it goes I bet

I donated all of my Astros stuff to charity.
I can't cheer for them anymore and have barely paid attention to their moves despite the season coming up. I love baseball too much and I can't watch the team anymore. I see the players entirely differently and I can't stand the front office.
I followed the Astros seriously starting in college, when they were absolute dog shit and had the nickname of the Lastros. I still loved and followed the team despite that, so the 2017 win after literally a decade of cheering the team was one of my most cherished moments in my life, especially after the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. I went to my first Astros game when I was a wee, little kid. Baseball was the first sport I played and the sport my dad taught me. I cherish the sport too much to continue to the root for this team and I treat our WS win with a giant asterisk. Its come to a point where I have to choose: the Astros or baseball. I've chosen baseball. It is no longer my team for the foreseeable future.
This may seem drastic but it's what I have to do to continue loving the game.
I'm moving to NY and the Mets were already my second team and I followed them casually since they're the Astros' sister team and are in another league. Since their stadium will be 20 minutes away from me I've decided to change teams.
I know this is sacrilege but in this case it's what I have to do to continue enjoying baseball.
Sorry for outbursts earlier in the thread, it was me coming to terms with massive heart break.
-
It's fine. You picked a team in your immediate area and of the opposite league, that's pretty standard in terms of shifting teams allegiance. I had a friend who grew up in San Diego and rooted for the Chargers, who switched to the Rams when the Chargers moved to L.A. a couple of years ago. The somewhat ironic thing is that he lived within 15 minutes of driving to the Stubhub center/Dignity Health stadium that they played in for a couple of seasons. Being a fan means making personal rules to get you though something at times.

Mets fans are passionate and know their baseball. NY is an incredible baseball market. I'm not cheering for no damn Yankees or the fucking Rangers. Old blood dies hard. If not for our rivalry I'd go with the Dodgers because although I sold all of my Astros hats to charity I still have Brooklyn Dodgers hats. I love that teams history and :bow to the legacy of Jackie Robinson. Dodgers were going to be close, but I don't want to be a dick rider fan either. Those dudes have been in so many World series matchups lately that a championship is inevitable. It'd be as bad as picking the Yanks. I could also go with the Giants, my dads team.

Last Mets game I went to, Alonso’s mlb rookie record tying home run game, Keith walked through the restaurant where my friend and I were eating, flanked by bodyguards and gave us a quick head nod even though it was apparent he didn’t want to be there :uguu
-
the restaurant food is that bad?
-
It was actually really really good, we went to the Porsche bar and grill, cost $40 to get in but they had a decent buffet out including charcuterie which I ate a ton of. We both got a really good burger with some kind of bacon jam and it was amazing. Other random things I just remembered about that game, Josh Donaldson spent a ton of time talking to the 3rd base umpire and Albies and Acuña kept throwing gum at Ahmed Rosario from the dugout and he’d just pocket it each time. Oh and for some reason the Mets did a weird ass shift where they left the short stop on the left side of the infield and had the 3rd baseman playing the 2nd base position and the 2nd basemen in short right field. Rosario had to cover 3rd on a play and looked super lost.
-
Honestly Mets fans don't even have it that bad. You've won it all twice, and didn't have to chest to do it. You've appeared in the world series a total of six times and you're almost in the playoffs in recent years, although they haven't made it in a while. You have it pretty good despite the tragedies. Imagine a team as bad as 2012 Astros.
-
I was born in 86 so the only teams I’ve seen go to the World Series were the 2000 and 2015 teams and we lost both in the same fashion blowing what should have been a game 1 win and having it all crumble from there. The Mets were pretty god damn bad in the early to mid 90’s but I don’t remember much about those teams at all. The Mets heartbreak is always about what could have been rather than just being plain ole bad, Beltran watching the curve from Wainwright in 06 to the collapses of the 07 and 08 Mets. I wouldn’t trade it for the world though, when the Mets are good and get into the post season it’s crazy. I was at game 1 of the 2015 NLCS against the cubs and I’d never experienced anything like that energy in person at a game before. It was nearly freezing and windy as hell but the stands were packed and Matt Harvey pitched 7.2 innings and barely made any mistakes. Still one of my favorite Mets memories.
As much as I don’t think baseball should be played this year I can’t say that I’m not excited for it to return.

I still don't see either sport making it into next month.

Dude athletes are by and large the dumbest motherfuckers in the world.
That's not really fair; they're hyper specialized geniuses in their fields, but in practical real world matters they basically know nothing, because in order to get as good as they've gotten at sports ball, THAT'S ALL THEY'VE EVER FUCKING DONE SINCE ADOLESCENCE. It's why you see so many buying into dumb shit like flat eartherism and other crap, they don't know anything and if someone they trust like an uncle or business manager tells them something crazy they'll just accept it.

Major League Baseball on Tuesday after at least 17 Miami Marlins players tested positive for COVID-19 between Opening Day and Tuesday.
The root of the Marlins' sudden outbreak hasn't been confirmed, but according to USA Today baseball insider Bob Nightengale, it started in Atlanta.
During an appearance in the 5:00-5:15 block on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh, Nightengale reported that "at least" one Marlins player, possibly more, left the team hotel and went out while in Atlanta, days before the season began.
Here's the report, verbatim, from Nightengale:
I think it's a wake-up call for all the other teams, saying, 'You'd better not go out at night.' Because if you bring it in, you've got a chance to knock off the season by yourself.
[...]
Well, I think a couple guys went out in Atlanta. That's what happened. I don't think it was any kind of fluke, from the bus driver or a pilot, any of that. I believe some guys got careless, at least one guy did for sure, he went out, and came back positive and spread it around.
Major League Baseball and the Marlins have yet to publicly discuss the cause of the team's outbreak.
The Marlins and Braves played an exhibition in Atlanta on July 22, which the Marlins won, 6-2. The Phillies opened their season against the Marlins, in Philadelphia, two days later.
The Marlins reportedly decided via group text to finish their season against the Phillies on Sunday, even after the team's expected starting pitcher tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Inquirer.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp issued an executive order in late June easing restrictions on restaurant capacities and employee face mask requirements.
Interestingly, Clippers guard and former Philadelphia 76er Lou Williams also recently decided to go out in Atlanta amid his respective sport's comeback attempt. Williams was spending time away from the NBA's Orlando bubble last week when he visited a strip club, and was subsequently placed in a 10-day quarantine by the league.

I normally wouldn’t be worried about a 1-4 start, but since that means almost 10% of the games have already been played, I am prepared to jump off a tall building next week.

re: extra innings rule change
It depends on how much the players hate it, at the end of next season there's a new CBA to be negotiated between the union and owners.
Honestly I don't mind it. It's not as fair as the NBA but more fair than the NFL or using penalty kicks/shots in soccer or hockey. Probably about on par with college football.

Hockey shootouts are way fairer than soccer ones.

Pardon my failure to take seriously the opinion of someone claiming to be a baseball purist that also only became a serious fan in the last 5 years ::)
-
I became a serious fan in college over ten years ago but like trolling you. :-* I went to Astros spring training games and suffered through the Lastros years
while it's true I haven't been a lifelong baseball fan there is no need to be upset
Mets had a good game! They almost turned it around after completely fucking it up! Well earned win for the Red Sox.

The extra inning rule exposed just how terrible today‘s teams are at executing small ball. :kermit
-
Three true outcomes, thanks Brad Pitt :goty

I also hoped that MLB would abolish the juiced ball, but seeing some of the homers hit the past week, it‘s here to stay :goty

You can only hit homer or not but homer, right? Right? Bassball = home run, yes? Si?
Precisely why DH in NL also fucking blows.
Small ball the god.

Post steroid era baseball was incredibly fun to watch, kinda like a throwback to the 80‘s, but baseball statniks ruined the game :nerds
Still love the game, but three outcome baseball is incredibly boring in comparison. I think 2008-2015 was my favorite recent era of baseball, even though the White Sox pretty much stunk.

Truly my friend.
What we need is a small ball team to decimate the rest of the league and embarrass the stat fgts
-
Ozzie Guillen needs a managerial job.
Him returning after his ardent defense of Chavismo and pissing off the Cuban Republicans in Florida by praising Castro would signal a shift of the MLB overton window and a return to small ball. :maduro
-
Too many hitters today can't actually hit. It's infuriating and compounds to make the TTO ball even worse.
-
The crux of the debate (to me at least) is whether or not baseball is an entertainment product or a scientific one.
As such I don't hold out much hope for a true grit team beating all the true outcome ones on the field over several seasons.
-
Ozzie da gawd is also responsible for the greatest baseball quote.
On Aj Pierzynski( :polandcry ) : If you play against him, you hate him. If you play with him, you hate him a little less. :rejoice

Yeah, a small ball oriented team would have to have pitching and defense on a historical level to overcome the undeniable statistical disadvantage when it comes to scoring runs. The Giants and Royals were the last teams to win the World Series with that approach utilizing stolen bases and striking out less than every other team in the league. But MLB discourages that style of play with the juiced ball that allows pretty much anyone to hit 20+ homers.
-
The return of Ozzie would would make American political discourse more entertaining, that's for sure. One day he'd say something wildly homophobic and earn many sympathetic defenses from right-wing pundits, then he'd talk about how great Maduro is 3 weeks later and make them all turn on him.
-
I was thinking of the Royals being the last team I can remember running that type of style.
What were your favorite teams to watch in that post steroid era, Biz?
-
I couldn‘t appreciate the Royals winning back to back AL pennants since they were division rivals and I was kinda jealous how they were able to win with that rag tag bunch :lol
But in hindsight their run was pretty great and fun to watch.
Always had a soft spot for the Scioscia Angels with Figgins, Izturis, Kendrick and Erick Aybar. Always going to first to third, testing the outfielders and the catchers by swiping bases. And they had Vladdy even though he was past his prime. Always hated Torii though :lol
The early Joe Maddon Rays were also pretty fun with a prime Carl Crawford.
I could have said the Twins as well, but fuck them and the Metrodome.
Never liked watching the A‘s. More like Jack Scust :scust , amirite?

I am also incredibly happy to have made a low effort Jack Cust pun almost a decade after his career ended.

Anything weird about the White Sox can be explained by just mentioning that they were owned by Bill Veeck.

If you are feeling nostalgic about baseball pre juiced ball era. MLB has uploaded every game in full length from 2009 on to youtube.
Just search for the channel mlbglobal09, mlbglobal10, and so on.
People made playlists listing every game chronologically, like this one for example.

Acuna is a very, veeeeeeerrry streaky hitter. He'll have stretches of mediocrity and then stretches like his RoY campaign where he homered in something stupid like 8 straight games.
He'll probably heat up right around the time we need him to carry us for a week or two, assuming we get to have more baseball in this, the darkest timeline.

Our real strength is our bullpen (well that and the top of our rotation but tbh I'd rather have Degrom than Soroka and I'm horny for Soroka)
Mets bullpen and back half of the rotation is trash (tbf our back half is not great either)
-
It doesn't help that Ramos isn't a good catcher. He frames some catches that should be strikes as balls. Then Syndergaard and Stroman are out.
This is a very frustrating game but I'm sticking to my guns!
Your batters are very consistent and your defense is on the ball. Pretty much everyone in the top half of the batter line up from leadoff Acuna all the way down to six hole are scary AB. Mets are lucky Acuna has been having a dry spell and even seems to be waking up.
Still have my Mets hat on and I'm cheering! I'd like at least one run even if they lose.
Looking forward to the deGrom and Soroka matchup on Monday!

It's also a benefit. Guy can't hit, run, or field and is DH. He flat out sucks. Dom has been put on the field and JD has had better success as DH than Ces, even getting a double. Ces shouldn't be in the batting lineup much less as DH.

I’d say it’s too soon to tell on the bat, he was too good a hitter for too long to have lost it all. Agree with the rest, especially about getting dom into the lineup.

Why are baseball players so fucking stupid?
I mean, I replied to this earlier but here goes again:
Elite level athletes spend the majority of their life from adolescence (if not early childhood) onward honing basically one set of skills in order to maximize their earning potential. Along with that, in order to succeed at a high level, they have to have unnaturally high confidence. So 1) they're invincible in their own minds, otherwise why would they have been able to earn all this money and fame, which our society values over almost anything else and 2) ignorant.
Some dudes that aren't ELITE elite athletes can make it and carry with them social and scholastic experiences outside of this paradigm and be mostly normal people; some are raised by parents that won't let the system fully warp their kids; and some for whatever reason can make it through as a semi-normal human being. Most of them are liable to believe their idiot uncles or business managers when they overhear dumb shit like flat earther-ism or anti-vax nonsense or dumb AF hotep level shit or anti Semitic horseshit.
The theory fits the reality of the situation. We really oughta quit deifying athletes, but I doubt it ever happens.
:yeshrug
-
I agreed with you before but given the NBA and NHL's use of the bubble it's clear not all elite athletes are equal. The NHL and NBA players are all concerned for their safety while the MLB players seem straight up mongoloids.
I'm going to assume that most baseball players swing more conservative than most other athletes as it's a conservative game steeped in tradition. NHL is mostly Canadian so of course they take it seriously. NBA is full of black people who mostly swing liberal and they're definitely taking it seriously. Whereas MLB is mostly white and Latino and doesn't give a fuck. It's also interesting to note how different teams respond differently to the pandemic. Liberal city clubs like the Yankees, Cubs, and Dodgers take masks and social distancing VERY seriously just watching their games. Whereas teams in more conservative areas (Marlins, Cards) don't. It's interesting how politics and demographics come into play here.
-
In general of humanity, people are as loyal and smart as their options. I think it's the lack of a bubble that is allowing more stupidity with MLB players.
-
MLB players turned down a bubble and Manfred didn't fight for its effectiveness far enough.
-
I don’t see how a bubble could have worked from a facility standpoint, Florida and Arizona were the only areas with adequate facilities but no domes in those areas this time of year and both being covid hotspots really hurts it’s feasibility. They probably should have just shut it down for good.
-
MLB players turned down a bubble and Manfred didn't fight for its effectiveness far enough.
Manfred fucked this all up, please stop trying to put all of this on the MLBPA. The majority of the players are dumb. The majority of the owners are dumb. Manfred is dumb and he needs to be replaced. No one is innocent in this situation and you're falling for the owners ploy by focusing all your frustrations toward the players.
I highly recommended listening to The Daily's episode on this situation that was released on opening day. Lots of interviews with Manfred over time as well as Selig.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/24/podcasts/the-daily/mlb-baseball-season-coronavirus.html
There should not have been a season. But we have one so I will root for my Mariners until it gets shut down and hope that no one gets sick.
The bubble would have been a great idea, but I have serious problems with rewarding Arizona and Florida for their shitty behavior by having all the games there.

I not once put all of this on the players. But look at the above tweets. Players went to a casino. Fuck them. They deserve being called out. But don't get it twisted, the rest of the league is just as much to blame for allowing such lax security on the players and what they can do to begin with. The owners are greedy bastards, the players are dumb bastards, and Manfred is an incompetent bastard that needs replacing.

Mets were playing really well today and then Soroka twisted his ankle (?) and got taken out of the game. Hope it wasn't too bad and he'll just have to sit out a couple of starts. Want Mets to beat the Braves at their best. :(

Soroka is one of the rising stars in baseball and this shit happens. Then there's Ohtani being diagnosed. Fuck fuck fuck fuck this meme season.
The only positive so far has been being able to see Kershaw do his business like someone owes him money and Mookie Betts Willie Mays-ing it. But even that won't make it worth it.

How do you explain Lou Williams going out to a strip club then?
If the NBA and NHL weren't in bubbles the same shit would be happening in those leagues.
-
I can think MLB's "suggestions" are bullshit while also feeling players that do this are idiots and irresponsible. At the end of the day, it was their decision to go to a strip club and while it's true that MLB's lax security helped contribute they still did it with their own decision-making. This idea that players should be absolved from responsibility because Manfred and MLB are also dipshits is complete bullshit. The Cards players going to the casino after those Marlins players caught the Rona are even more complicit.
More evidence Manfred should be fired and is a limp wristed leader who is incapable of making actual decisions. Astros skirting punishment which enabled revenge from ball players is yet another example of his inability to lead. Then, like now, no one is being punished. A real Commish would threaten anyone that breaks his rules of confinement with lifetime bans from baseball. After all, you're putting your team, coaches, and staff at risk and could contribute to killing someone.

Really like what I’m seeing from Andres Giminez, reminds me of Jose Reyes when he first came up. He helped the Mets manufacture two runs, first with a stolen base and later by getting on with a drag bunt, going first to third, and then coming home on a really shallow fly out. The Mets have really lacked speed since Reyes signed with Miami and it’ll be nice to see if Giminez can put together that kind of offense the Mets have sorely missed.

Meet the Mess! :heartbeat
-
Not sure if he’s stretched out enough at the moment, but I’d like to see Kilome get a start.
-
Kilome is a great prospect. I also like Peterson and some of the other new pitchers. I honestly don't think Stroman is too much of a loss. Syndergaard is a bigger loss.

Were there really pre-season predictions of greatness for the Mets with Syndergaard and Stroman out, Van Wagenen as GM selling Mets' prospects and Rojas being kinda unproven in terms of record sans Minor Leagues?

Stroman himself no, but trading SWR for 11 stroman starts really pisses me off. I’m usually 100% for the players here but Stroman waiting until he got his service time and opting out a day before he comes off the IL is not a good look. I have no problem with his opting out, I get that, but he made sure it wouldn’t affect him negatively before he did it.

The Bore baseball community is held together by misery. Human Snorenado will join us once the Braves get bounced in the NLDS agian.
-
They could get bounced in the wild card series :heh
-
Oh I have no illusions, we'll be lucky to get out of the WC round. I'd say we probably would have been favored before Soroka went down but it is what it is.
:yeshrug
-
Oh hey, the Braves started playing at 6 today, wonder who's pitching-
*it's Newcomb*
*it's 9-1 Philly up on us in the 2nd and Newcomb lasted 1 1/3*
welp

THIS FUCKIN TEAM. The scrub ass 2nd stringers are still fighting in the bottom of the 9th starting the inning off down 13. Love these fuckers.

16-2 Nationals against the Mets!
Good news: The SNY broadcast is hilarious. They're playing some classical music while Keith reads about the 69 Miracle Mets. More good news: Guillermo might be a viable closer!
And the Mets get a home run!
They're gonna win!

McNeil will be fine, although I don’t think Mike Baxter ever played again after a similar play to save Santana’s no hitter.

Mets! :) Very proud of those boys and their against Manfred and for justice!

Mets sweep a double header from the Yankees for the first time in team history and do it in walk off fashion on the road and Cohen reportedly won the bidding for the team. Best day for the Mets in the last 4 years easy.

WHAT
COHEN WON?!
-
Yea, it seems that way, the arod/jlo group sent out a message saying they were upset and they thought the bid was solid and that they wish the Wilpons and the organization well. Supposedly cohens bid was the highest and he’s entered into an exclusive arrangement to determine final price and it should be over in a few days.
Oh wasn’t all good news today though, Gsellman starts tomorrow :-\
-
Wonder what Cohen's first move will be
-
Replacing Brodie hopefully
-
Replacing Brodie hopefully
I don't know how you turn a franchise around, but it probably starts with hiring a real GM.
Brodie might have been a good GM with some oversight. But the guy just wrecked the New York Mess with bad trades and sweetheart deals for his ex-clients.
-
The Mets can probably be competitive with minor tweaks and good luck with health of their current roster
No clue what their farm system looks like so can't say how long they can sustain being competitive
Still would also fire Brodie just cause he seems like a douche
-
Also, Braves traded for Tommy Millone, an ok middle to end of the rotation starter, for two ptb (not on the 40 man roster so likely nobodies) which was necessary given the absurd crap we've gone through this year(Soroka out, Felix opting out, Folty and Newk sent down due to ineffectiveness, Kyle Wright and Touki being too inconsistent to be relied upon, etc etc ad infinitum)
If Ian Anderson keeps up what he did in his first start, Fried stays healthy, Millone stays dependable, and Cole Hamels making progress back (he threw his 2nd bullpen of his rehab today), we might be able to cobble together a rotation for a potential postseason series
-
Tommy Milone has played for both the Mets and nats, he’s something of a known quantity to the NL east. I think it’s much more likely that he flounders than succeeds, but I get why the Braves made the move, he’s been solid this year and the Braves rotation has very much not been.
I just checked out his stats, he’s 2-1 against the nats, 2-0 against the Mets, 1-0 against the marlins but a 5.91 era, 0-0 against the phils with 0.00 era in 3 games. The AL east feasts on him though. Not sure how many inter league games the Braves have remaining but hopefully he won’t be starting any of those.

This Mets offense has been at or near the top in most offensive categories this year, they just can’t score runs for some reason. All positions are in the NL;
AVG: 2nd
OBP: 1st
SLG: 6th
OPS: 4th
BB: 5th
SO: 11th
But runs scored, 10th.
It just makes no sense.
-
.641 OPS (https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/splits-leaderboards?splitArr=59&strgroup=season&statgroup=2&startDate=2020-3-1&endDate=2020-11-1&filter=&position=B&statType=team&autoPt=false&players=&sort=9,1&pg=0&splitArrPitch=&splitTeams=false&groupBy=season) with runners in scoring position will do that.
-
29th out of 30 teams :killme
It makes no sense with the rest of the Mets offensive numbers. Put a runner at 2nd and the Mets forget how to hit.
-
This Luis Robert kid is going to be a pretty decent player.
Sloppy series against KC, but I’ll take two out of three against anyone.
First place baybee!
-
The best thing I can say about Brodie is he only traded away one prospect.
Got a lot of detritus in exchange. But at least Todd Frazier is a third baseman who's going to play third base.
-
I’m guessing jd davis is hurt if they felt the need to acquire a corner infielder. Really not looking forward to watching Frazier strike out and hit .230 again. Chirinos makes some sense as the Mets have not gotten any production out of the catchers this year. Hopefully realmuto is a Met next season.

holy shit! :fbm

Honestly there's no way Cohen would be able to have an impact this season with all the intricacies of such a huge business transaction. November sounds right and will let him start to reshape the team over the offseason.

He had dementia for a few years already, a very sad end.
-
Seaver was one of those guys still pitching well into his 40s when I was a kid. Just a marvel to see someone still excel at the age when most others flame out in their early 30s. He looked like an old gym coach out there hurling the ball. I think his last season was with that famous 86 Red Sox team where Bill Buckner booted the ball in the WS.

Angel Hernandez still affecting meaningful games in 2020. The guy should've been out of the league 15 years ago. How is it possible someone can be bad for so long and have a job?
Anyways, here's the Indians walk-off homer run call from last night. They are back in the playoffs.

Home plate umpires across the league have sucked this year, inconsistent and just plain bad calls across the board. Bring on the robots

Braves clinch 3rd straight division title

Fuck the Braves

Only 8 more and maybe they’ll make it out of the division series :teehee

I am all for Sandy Alderson returning to the New York Mess as team president.
Brodie Van Wagenen deserves a chance to redeem himself. But there needs to be oversight. He's proven adept at giving sweetheart deals to ex-clients and trading away prospects for garbage.

It tastes racist!!!

I was rooting for the Braves over the dodgers cause I have a friend on Xbox who’s a dodger fan and he’s fucking insufferable. Was a nice change of pace that my heart didn’t drop when freeman turned on that inside pitch that betts robbed. Sucked that it was caught though.
-
I knew we were fucked on Friday when we couldn't hold on in game 5. I didn't bother listening to either game 6 or 7 on the radio.
Honestly tho considering everything we did great. Over the first 9 games of the post season we were on one hell of a run. Be fun to watch next year if Soroka/Fried/Anderson can all stay healthy and effective and we either re-sign or replace Ozuna somehow.
-
Final play of game 4 was spectacular in so many ways. The error in the outfield. The base running stumble on the way to home thinking they would have to run back to third only for the catcher to misplay the catch at home and then the baserunner slides into home and slaps the plate.
Beautiful. Borderline romantic.

This series is crazy

Dodgers losing in heart-breaking fashion :aah

All Robinson Cano had to do to collect $24 million was not do the illegal drug.
The Mets will be fine without him, especially if they don't rush out to overpay another aging middle infielder to take his place. The team has plenty of young players capable of playing second base.
Use Cano's salary to invest in a real third baseman and a center fielder. Oh, and a pitcher not picked from the morgue registry.
-
It’s like Christmas in November. Cohen takes over and good things start happening :rejoice
-
Bis, or anyone who might know, is it possible to bypass blackout restrictions on mlb.tv with a VPN?
-
Don't want to sound down on the new New York Mets because it's still early, but if you believe the rumors the team is all in on every relief pitcher out there.
Sandy Alderson, if I recall, was big on stocking up on crappy relievers during his first run with the Mets.
The Mets need a third baseman who plays third base and they need a centerfielder who can play center field. They need another pitcher, too, one who isn't plucked from the ICU. After you fill the holes, then you can sign or trade for relief pitchers.
-
Seems like the Mets are getting Lindor and Carrasco for gimenez, rosario, and prospects Isaiah Greene and Josh wolf. I’d have rather gotten Suarez and Castillo from the reds if a similar package minus one of our shortstops could have gotten it done. Hope this means a lindor extension happens as well.

I wouldn't have traded Gimenez. I'm not a big fan of mortgaging the future.
Everyone is saying Cleveland got fleeced. I don't think that's true. Maybe it's just because this is the Mets, but I think the trade favors Cleveland.

Gimenez looks like he could be a stud, his bat played a lot more than I expected for his age last year. Trading him hurts but it’s hard to say anything about the prospects since they didn’t even play last year. Rosario doesn’t look like he’ll ever put it all together so his inclusion in the trade is fine.
Cleveland also gained like 35-40m off the books this year and next which is why the return was fairly light. If lindor is extended I’ll be satisfied with the trade, if not then the trade may slightly favor the Indians.
-
Indians have lost so many all-star quality players it doesn't even phase me anymore. You just expect it and hope the you get a diamond out of the basket of players you acquire. So far, they've been pretty lucky into flipping these players.
Carrasco in particular was acquired via the Cliff Lee trade all those years ago. While Carlos never was an ace, he was a very solid 3 for many years. It was a good trade.
-
Funny thinking the Mets would change.
I'm polishing my résumé.

LolMets is never going away is it?

How the fuck is this lolmets if they fired the guy with competence mere hours after the report?
He was hired last month and is easily replaceable.
Lolmets must have a pretty liberal definition, especially days after acquiring Lindor and the amount of flex the team currently has but ok.

The lolmets part is losing a GM 37 days after hiring him. I get this was mainly a cubs problem, it should have been dealt with back then clearly someone in the organization knew. But this is the second year in a row that the Mets lost a prominent employee without them making it through a single game. That seems pretty lolmets to me.
All that said, yes the Mets were quick in firing him as they should have been, there’s no place for that kind of behavior in baseball or elsewhere.
-
Only the Mess would be able to field three separate accusations of sexual harassment by current/former employees in the span of two(?) months.
-
Superbump.
Mets had a good season, but the disintegration was monumental. And I can't imagine having a worse trade deadline even if you set out to acquire bad players.
Overspending can only get you so much. If owner Steve Cohen is smart, he'll be patient and rebuild.
