Haha, the market for consoles is absolutely not growing.  Yes, this generation sold more consoles than the last, but divide the total by years and it looks a lot less pretty.  That's not even talking about software.

Can you say anything about US software PS2 vs 360,PS3,Wii ?

You make a mistake in thinking that next-gen consoles is my platform of choice.

If this truly is the last console generation (I don't believe that either) then it's going to run longer than the previous generations. With the market focusing on tablets, smart TVs and smartphones you're not going to see the same rapid evolution of processing power and computationally intensive games. The 720/PS4 could very well last for a decade and that will give them enough time to outsell the current iterations of hardware.

Going for long generations is probably necessary when you're selling heavily subsidized hardware. Neither Sony or Microsoft are going to push for the 9th generation unless they absolutely have to. I'm anticipating Apple TV, Google, Samsung, Ouya and a few other companies to try to get in on the console market this and next year which will hopefully halt the graphics arms race.

Where are EA, Activision, and Ubisoft going to go if the home console market fails? Nintendo aren't going to provide powerful enough hardware, and the PC market is more crowded and ripe with piracy. If the PS4 launches at a more acceptable price than last time then I believe it's going to do quite well. Same with Xbox 8.

Nintendo's stuff was crazy balls this gen but I think we can all agree that train has sailed.  CoD did somewhat better than GTA, most everything else did worse than equally-ranked PS2 games. The US market is up a bit, but not enough to make up for the vanished JP console market and the shrunken Euro market.

Thx.

Not sure how Europe will do next gen(probably contract even more) but Japan moving away from consoles will certainly not help consoles in the West.

I could definitely see Wii U being their last console.  Nintendo clearly doesn't feel like competing against Sony and Microsoft yet probably can't think of a good enough gimmick to try to overcome the power gap.  Instead I could see that the 4DS can plug into the TV instead.  Then Nintendo can treat that as both the next handheld and next console for them.  However, I don't see any real benefit for Nintendo to make Durango and PS4 games.

Porting some of their NES games to iOS and Android would probably be a pretty good source of revenue for them as well.  I'm sure Super Mario Bros. would sell millions of copies if not tens of millions.

What I want out of Nintendo is a powerful (~WiiU level) handheld that comes in 2 sizes - either a tablet (WiiU controller) or handheld (DS) size... all the hardware is localized to the handheld, but you can also buy for ~$50 a "base" that plugs into the TV via HDMI that you can stream the handheld to. Basically, the reverse of the WiiU concept. (and this way, you don't have to worry about a wired connection to the TV via one long HDMI cable the way you do with the later PSP revisions).

You don't think the next generation is going to last as long as this one? The new systems might sell at a slower pace, but I wouldn't be surprised if the LTD ends up higher than the current gen.

It's going to go on indefinitely, because it's going to be the last generation.

in other words, an ipad for kids. which is what nintendo SHOULD have done this gen.

i think theres at least some sort of balance between a games budget and its pricing that can be found that will work better than what we have nowadays. spending tens of millions of dollars and 2-3 years dev time on a crapshoot isnt sustainable, and neither is churning out ios titles and f2p games. making products that wont make you kroke are something something i cant concentrate on finishing this thought

Nobody knows what the hell will be going on 5-10 years from now.  Going to a cloud based service might end up hastening the decline.  Like I said, I'm pretty sure it will wipe out the Xbox brand but at that point, maybe Microsoft isn't going to give a shit.

Yeah the market and the technical circumstances have changed so much over the last years that extrapolating from the past seems pretty useless. Casuals and more importantly people that are somewhere between casual and core gamer moving to cheap games on mobile devices is probably the trend that spells the most doom and gloom for the coming generation.

Consumers do want video games.  Luckily, video games are provided on their browsers, phones, and tablets at a fraction of the cost of console games.
Tablet gaming is adequate for a lot of people, but it's still far from providing the same experiences that enthusiasts get from their consoles. When was the last time you heard of someone ditching Call of Duty for Modern Combat just because it was cheaper? If you for instance look at the the Top 40 Entertainment UK list that was released yesterday you'll see that most of the popular games on it would be very difficult to adapt to phones/tablets. Advanced browser games could easily work from a technical perspective, but projects like Quake Live never really caught on in popularity.

Yeah many games are difficult to adapt but a lot of the semi casual gamers that buy one or two games will make decision if they want a console that plays advanced games or a tablet that might not be perfect for games but provides a lot of other additional entertainment. Not everybody that might theoretically be interested in a proper game once in a while will make the investment towards it, because even more other forms of entertainment than before battle for his attention.

That might be the part where I don't agree with most analysts. I think smartphones and tablets are going to replace desktops, laptops, and portable consoles. Home consoles will survive since there is 1) a demand for games that not be found on other platforms and 2) a lot of companies have a large stake in the market. It's not only Microsoft and Sony that have an interest in their platforms. Publishers and developers also need home consoles in the future if they want to continue with their current line of work.

Your calculation is assuming that there is a perfect overlap between the popular console franchises. The Call of Duty audience is largely separate from the FIFA audience and the Gran Turismo audience. If you add these together you'll have enough customers to continue to sustain a home console market. I don't doubt that a lot of developers will continue to disappear when there isn't enough money for ten different Call of Duty clones, but the popular franchises will live on for another generation without much trouble.

That's sustainable to justify the existence of the consoles, but it's not inherently enough to provide a mass base of users to justify every title and genre on those platforms.

Even though they're still on consoles, look at the shift to handhelds as primary platform for lots of the "Japanophile" set over the last generation. And then there's the genres fleeing back to the PC or heading to phones after taking another shot at consoles this gen. If some of them sustain on consoles it'll be XBLA/PSN type stuff.

Let's switch focus for a bit. What's your take on the smartphone/tablet market? Are you expecting the F2P with IAP bubble to burst? Will offering $0.99 games prevent people from wanting to spend more money on more expensive games? Even though the most popular titles rake in an ungodly amount of money, I get the impression that it's much more difficult to predict what games will become popular. Will large companies like Zynga, PopCap, and Rovio, be forced to buy up indie successes when their internal products fail to meet the same success as their predecessors?

I think they're already sorta doing that.

The thing about the smartphone/tablet market is just that it finally provides yet another outlet for games. And it has the advantage of selling to a device people already own in most cases.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I don't see any of this everything smartphone/everything motion control/one-console future lots of people like to envision but more of a market no longer constrained to a couple platforms by near fiat. Hardcore gamers hate it because they want everything but many people seem fine with the games available on their platform as long as there are enough. And most of the hardcore buy everything anyway.

I can easily envision someone having a Call of Duty/Madden box but spending more time and dollars over the same period on some other platform like a smartphone. Maybe because I know these people already.

I knew Vita still had some fight left in it (in Japan at least).

But yeah there's no denying that the market for dedicated gaming machines is shrinking. I see the future of handheld gaming turning to android smartphones w/ controller attachments. Aren't Sony's smartphones being trounced by Samsung and Apple?

but hopefully devs see this little blip as a call for some games on the damn thing.

Taken from the Wii U deadpool thread

Quote from: CNET
In a research note to investors today, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said that he believes Nintendo sold just 80,000 Wii U units in February -- the same number of original Wii units that sold. What's worse, the Wii U's sales were about half of the 165,000 PlayStation 3 units sold last month and far behind the Xbox 360's 225,000 unit sales, according to Pachter.

IIRC Pachter's guess numbers are usually higher than the real number NPD gives so this is gonna be interesting.

*shrugs*

I have a hard time feeling bad for someone who asked not to be treated like a stereotype but acted like a stereotype.  Granted yeah he's not as bad as your average gaffer, but still...
Remember when Crushed was an awful stereotype and then turned awesome when it wasn't working for him?  I miss Crushed  :'(

Same.  Crushed seemed to really get the bore, shame he's gone.

It'll be nice when there's more games worth talking about than numbers (and how they keep getting smaller.) Roll on next-gen, which I won't join for a year or three, haha.

In the context of Vita's userbase and current sale, what would be a pretty respectable LTD number for SS, a resultant of showing *some* legs?

I mean with 104k as a start, even if it surprises everyone with softer drops, it can't go that far... let alone inspire confidence in any skeptic pub/dev.

I don't think so, but that won't stop him for swooping in to take some unearned credit.

I don't blame him, I try to take unearned credit all the time about anything

Who's in the top 5 bad posters anyway? Lager has never bothered me, then again not even Methodis has. I see past his shenanigans  as shenanigans and just reply with humour.

Eh, I guess any list would be pretty subjective anyway. So about that Patcher WiiU NPD number, has the actual NPD come out yet?

We've got so few active posters that the lists overlap-- third best poster is probably fifth worst. :lol

Remember that 3D glasses free lawsuit against Nintendo?

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/13/us-nintendo-patent-infringement-idUSBRE92C1DA20130313

Quote
(Reuters) - A federal jury in New York on Wednesday found that video game company Nintendo Co infringed an inventor's 3-D display technology patent with its handheld 3DS videogame system.

The jury awarded the inventor, Seijiro Tomita, $30.2 million in compensatory damages.

Some interesting numbers

But I thought 360 owners just stare at ads.Wii is a streaming box naturally.

The figure would be far more interesting if it showed hours instead of a percentage. We know that the PS3 is the most popular system for Netflix, but I haven't seen any stats showing how much people use their systems for gaming.
