honest question - how do games companies factor in the complete random nature of mobile and the absolute off the chart failure rates?

I appreciate "dev costs are less" but the trend is going to push up where mobile is and what users expect.... or possibly not? In which case - the fart-button equivalent of most games is going to be the pre-dominant gaming norm

That's a decent enough number.  Launch weeks aren't terribly useful for predicting much, though.  Could go either way from here.

Got beat by the PS2 and Wii in their respective console launch period of 2 days but that sounds like good company.

It's not really an honest question, but I'll answer anyway.  First of all, the mobile market isn't any more random than the traditional market.  The problem comes when companies roll in expecting the market to behave in exactly the same way as the console market. 

so - it's not any more random, just behaviour is different. So ... what is the X factor? It just seems that that is nigh on impossible to nail down. Outside of a few series, everything else looks like a total crap shoot.

Or am i missing some pattern?

.  For what it's worth, the folks at EA's mobile division, King.com, Gameloft, Supercell, and others seem to have a pretty good bead on the market.  Again, is there a specific high profile disaster you can point to?

I think the point is more that there are no slam dunks - game quality/budgets etc don't necessarily translate into success.

I was wondering why some guys I know weren't picking up the PS4 because it had no games. WOW they weren't kidding.

Would anyone happen to know what the digital release schedule is like for the PS4 in Japan?

Zynga basically expanded too quickly and didn't have a lot of success with their own products on the App Store.  Their tactic of buying out whatever indie stuff became hot was something that worked for them on Facebook, but didn't work out too well on mobiles.  Still, I think they're the best example of high-profile flopping.  Everyone else in the big-boy-pants club seems to be cruising along fine.

Hey Oscar are you a big mobile fan, btw? Your keen insight and opinions are educated. I'm just curious since I find it typical that anyone who's a "core gamer" is not clued into what goes on in mobile space outside of game developers or working in a related industry.

In Sony news Gio Corsi's division is out there trying to make sure the PS4 is filled to the brim with ports. Doesn't mean much now but at least it sounds like Sony is concentrating their efforts to make sure there's a steady stream of games and exclusives down the road. Gio Corsi isn't really a well known name but he been at Nexon, Lucasfilm Singapore, Mainframe, and Propaganda for example.

The list I posted includes PSN-only games. By the nature of the delivery method, I'm sure there will be some more things announced in the near future, but it's no less barren than the retail lineup.
