Louie was great. I've never really thought about how a white parent - or actually any parent to be honest - would explain the language in Huckleberry Finn to their kid. I read it for (home)school when I was pretty young and hated having to say the n-word out loud, but by the end I fell in love with the book and had some basic understanding of it, even at a young age.

If I had kids that young I'd probably just read them Harry Potter or something. Then once they get around 9-10 bust out the Huck

In Texas you read Huck at a young age.  Young enough that you don't understand the issues and point of views that the book is trying to push.  So children just grow up racist.  True story.

Almost done with Sopranos S2. So far it's not as good as S1, and in some ways seems to be a repeat with gang infighting/trying to get rid of Tony. Definitely liking it though.

I started watching Lexx from the start. I watched a couple of episodes when it was on Sci Fi with Farscape in an awesome two hours of bizarre Sci Fi. The world of Lexx is some dark dystopia shit (the conveyer belts of body parts) but then again the first episode turns everything around by having all these characters with weird only-in-fantasy origins and you get lines like this.

Jem and the Holograms

I've only seen 2 episodes so far but in both episodes the commercial breaks and endings both had cliffhangers where it seemed like the villains kill Jem and all of her friends.  One of the villains blows up a foster home that Jem owns and everybody inside almost dies, including the kids.  It's kinda fucked up!  The Misfits and their record exec aren't just trying to stop Jem from being the #1 pop artist, they're always trying to murder her in messed up ways.

There's also a scene where one of the girls steals money from the home's money jar.  The other foster children tell the girl she has to pay it back.  The girl says "how am I gonna pay it back?" and they basically say "we don't know but you gotta get the money somehow."  It almost sounds like they're telling her to whore herself out.

so yeah, Jem, who knew?  I grew up watching He-Man instead (but I'm not sure which show would have been more gay, actually)

Still watching Lexx. Kai is god damned annoying. His character feels like some nerd's idea of himself in a scifi fantasy world. Has no personality whatsoever, has the world revolve around him and women for no reason fall in love with him. And that stupid hairdo.

Been watching Torchwood: Miracle Day.  It's interesting enough.  But I'm starting to think that they've changed the character of Jack Harkness a little.  When they first introduced him on DW, he was described as being a "sexual" character, meaning he would have sex with just about anything.  Now it just seems that he's gay, and that's all they want you to know about him.

Also, I DL'd the pilot of Wonder Woman.  I got through the first 15 minutes before I had to turn it off.  It was just fucking awful.

Also, I DL'd the pilot of Wonder Woman.  I got through the first 15 minutes before I had to turn it off.  It was just fucking awful.

I skipped around through it too, and yes, it is really bad

she is the owner of a company who fights crime in a colorful outfit to sell merchandise.  you have two identities at this point: wonder woman and Diana BusinessWoman.  But there is a third identity, her secret identity, as an ordinary girl, with glasses(!), named Diana.  So three identities.

later in the episode, she wants to prove that another company is making super steroids.  she dressed up, breaks in, and murders security guards.  not implied or seriously hurts, but literally murders them.  she tosses a metal tube through someone's neck Matrix style.  later a woman acknowledges that she murdered innocent workers and the justice system will ruin her.  but no, she's free to go because...so the last shot is her making a facebook page.

I felt like they started moving Jack in that direction during the second season of Torchwood. Nothing new, but still annoying since he's supposedly "omnisexual."

Whoever does Archer and Bob from Bob's Burgers is amazing.

I don't know if the shows have anything else in common, but both are probably the best animated shows I've seen in years.  Bob's Burgers is fucking ace.  When it comes out on dvd I'm getting it for sure.  Just like Archer, the cast compliments each other so well and the animation is so quirky and charming.

The gf and I finished up The Shield. Probably going to take a few days to really digest how everything played out, but right now I feel it was a fantastic way to end the series.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I can't recall why, but I had called Shane's ending early on in the episode, so it didn't give me the emotional sucker-punch that it seemed to be aiming for. But as far as Vic was concerned, my guesses as to how he would end up were all over the map, and always wrong. Some pretty amazing acting in the finale as well (not that it wasn't good throughout, just really seemed to be kicked up a notch).
[close]

Best thing I can say about the show is it left me wanting more, which for a 7-season TV show that we marathoned over a very short period of time, is no small feat.

About to finish the first season of Supernatural. Damn this show is bloodier than anything I've seen from the CW. Slicing throat, hands being turned into garbage disposal slushee etc. Also the interaction between Dean and Sam as brothers is perfect. I love when they rag on eachother and Dean has an endearing awkwardness about him that makes me want to split my cheeks in his presence.

xposted from wyl

Scooby-Doo: Mystery Inc. episode 26 (season finale) aired tonight. Nobody cares about the series except me, but I think it deserves e-nerds attention more than that amusing, but ultimately for toddlers My Little Pony cartoon. And anyone who gave Adventure Time a shot should give this one a chance. At least some of the people who worked on Venture Bros. works on this, too.

I'm sort of conflicted, if I say some of the awesome things that happened in this show it will make an initial viewing less awesome. On the other hand, if I don't say anything, nobody will be interested. But I'll spoil-hide it to try and cover both bases.

Off the top of my head, here's some of the cool things that happened this season:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
  • Cameos by Speed Buggy, Jabberjaw, Funky Phantom, and Captain Caveman in a dream sequence.
  • Cameo by the main cast of Johnny Quest.
  • Fred and Daphne remarking of Scrappy and Flim Flam statues "Never again."
  • Vincent Van Ghoul is an actual character, who in the Scooby universe makes cheesy horror movies.
  • HP Hatecraft is a (recurring) character, and in the Scooby universe is renowned for his novel "Char Gar Gothakon: The Beast Which Hath No Name". He had an entire episode dedicated to his battle with the female author of teen vampire romance novels.
[close]

They also confirmed that Blue Falcon and Dynomutt will appear next season, and the Johnny Quest cast will have some involvement too.

Anyways, as for the episode itself, it ended on a massive cliffhanger with the gang broken up, and sets up an overarching series villain and plot motivation.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
It also notably revealed that the Mayor was not Fred's dad, and that his mother and father are currently missing.
[close]

Basically makes me want the second season all the more.

It's basically a show for anyone who has ever liked Scooby at any point in their lives.

I'm going to back up Andrex on the new Scooby Doo.  It's really really quite good.  I checked it out on some other nerd's suggestion and it's episodic, but with an overall arc in the background and a nice modern take on the characters.  I like that they're stable and presented with home lives and we get new looks at familiar characters and situations.

Despite basically never having time to watch TV, I somehow managed to watch all 2 seasons of Community over the past couple of weeks. As usual with American comedy, the life lessons get old real fast (even when tongue in cheek, as here) but the show is still great. Fast, funny, inventive.
