So is Blade Runner: The TV Series [aka Almost Human] actually going to be any good? Because I really want a show about a surly Karl Urban teaming up with a hip black robot to fight crime in a future time to be totally awesome.
Thanks for the heads-up! That looks really cool!
I'm worried that there's no promotional stuff flooding the interwebs for a show exec-produced by JJ Abrams. I'm all about Karl Urban getting more work. He's awesome!
So I watched the pilot; it is pretty darned good. I like the way the partner is written. He seems very self-aware; not only of the delicate nature of his continued existence, but of his need to humanize himself, even when his abilities exceed human levels -- perhaps even more so then.
It's possible they've left me enough wiggle room to read way too much into the social portion of their world, but I'm optimistic that it's intentional, and will be explored as the series continues. I mean, it says something about the world that the DRN series synthetic androids were discontinued in favor of new models which do not feel emotions, and are purely logical.
I also enjoy how openly the show riffs from other respected SF movies, and then switches it up. Karl's gesture-UI PC in his panorama-window apartment is straight out of
Minority Report, and the kiosk-style noodle café shot in the rainy, neon-lit night was aping
Blade Runner so hard, when the cop pulled up next to Karl's car, I thought the cop would announce. "This sector is closed to ground traffic. What are you doing here?"
