Yeah they could have gone super serious procedural smart guy solves crimes but instead make weird ferris beuller homages out of an episode dealing with cia black ops happening on US soil.

I like how they've started to tone down the "Brian is useless and a complete idiot without NZT" aspect and make it more along the lines that he simply wasn't ever applying himself.

Now, Blindspot, there's a show that until the last episode was killing itself by almost never allowing any sense of humor or light hearted moments at all.

Decided to try and finish up Defiance now that the show is not-renewed for another season. Suddenly the wrap-up of the Votanis Collective siege on Defiance seemed utterly awesome. I loved it. I thought "Why was I not enjoying this? This is great!" and then the very next episode is a monster-of-the-week episode without reliable character reactions. I thought:

Almost done watching Transparent S1 and while the show is extremely well directed with probably the best cinematography on TV, it's kind of frustrating to watch because the kids are all awful rich narcissistic shitty people who you can't relate to and it's really tough to care about them and their problems.  While Tambor's character is great, 3 of the 4 main characters are just tough to watch because it's watching a great show about people with hardly anything redeeming about them.  It's like every ep makes me hate them more.  It's one thing to make story arcs with terrible dysfunctional people in 90-120 min movies where they grow and become better by the end, but over a 5 hour show it feels more grating.  Only got a couple of eps left now, will be interesting to see how they can do a S2 as assuming it's like indie family drama films, there should be some resolution for everyone in the end, so it's like what's there to do for S2.  But yeah, looking forward to seeing how the show resolves the fact that all these kids are terrible.  Maybe they all die and Maura goes and has a nice vacation.

I watched S1 of The Knick back when that free preview was up on HBO. I totally agree with mormapope. The cinematography is fucking absurd, the anachronistic score by Cliff Martinez is (unsurprisingly) amazing, the characters are multidimensional as fuck, and Clive Owen does a great impression of Hitler falling apart in his bunker (https://twitter.com/CajoleJuiceEsq/status/658466325245894656).

It has spoiled me for other television. I mean, I've been watching Orphan Black since then, and while Tatiana Maslany is incredible, it's just like "Yeah, this is a TV show." The Knick is Soderbergh making almost every other thing on TV look like trash. I say "look" because it's the direction and cinematography that most separate it (the same goes for True Detective S1).

The Knick, Transparent and True Detective are the only TV shows I've seen that really feel like "film" and not TV.  They all have incredible cinematography.  I hope this becomes of a trend for TV shows.  Definitely makes them much more visually pleasant to watch.  I've heard Hannibal has really good cinematography, but I haven't watched it yet.

Finished Transparent S1.  I guess that's how you do a S1 by not resolving things much and adding new directions for every plotline.  :|  Great show, I'll knock it a point because I prefer TV seasons that have closure and would be fine if the series was not renewed/cancelled any season.  But it was just so well made, as a cinema fan couldn't help but really enjoy almost every ep.  The flashback ep was super super good.  Great performances all around, and nice music selection.  It's a tough choice for me picking between Soderbergh and Soloway for best director this year.  So much effortless style in both The Knick and Transparent.  Good times for TV.

I'd argue multiple TV shows have caught up with film quality over the last decade - and surpassed it in some ways, given the prominence of pedestrian sequels and adaption films. I'd rather watch a great show that a great movie right now.

It's early but The Knick really separates itself from a lot of great shows by having consistent side plots and secondary characters. I've been rewatching The Sopranos and there are more than a few subplots that simply aren't that interesting.

I'm a massive hannibal fan and it's easily my favorite of this era but I'll admit it dips a couple times over it's three year. Still love it though.

But yes when amazon prime pilots exude filmic qualities you know we're definitely in a new era of television (check out Patriot)

Surprisingly, it reminded me a lot of Oz, a prison drama that aired on HBO. Having a large cast of characters and digging everything happening with them is a rarity for TV shows. The Sopranos has weak characters that will get airtime, this is very true.

Watched the first ep of Jessica Jones.  Normally don't wanna go the whole "book is better than the movie" routine, but this really sucks that what is imo the funniest comic book run in the Marvel Universe (the closest movie/tv show to Alias is the first Clerks movie) is being tossed out the window to do a generic DARK EDGY FUCKED UP THRILLER.  I get the latter stuff all the time in movies and TV, otoh good humor, good superhero universe humor is incredibly rare and it looks like they're gonna miss their chance with the show.

Done though episode 4.  Purple man is excellent.  Miniseries are way better at building up comic book villains just because they get more time to actually make the character.

Marathoned through Master of None on netflix.

What started as a quirky, fast paced comedy turned into an honest portrayal of relationships. A lot of people compare it to Louie, I prefer Master of None. It doesn't feel nearly as abstract or forced. While character personalities are often consistent and bombastic, the world in Master of None is still our own.

Aziz Ansari really proved himself with this show. Eric Wareheim has directed stuff in the past, and he does a great job here.

Eh, I feel like both sides are fairly well covered. DD and JJ on one side, Flash and SHIELD on the other.

"Too dark" or "too campy/light" are never really legit criticisms IMO. Is it well written? If yes, then the tone doesn't matter.

Regardless of quality and consistency, you may not appreciate the tone. It's maybe no flaw in the artistic work themselves, but most "criticism" as done here is not aimed at the artists, but to other members of the audience...

Torture Porn Smurfs movie series might be theorically possible to pull off well, and you could always argue that the extreme counterpoint and subversion has value in itself. Do we really need it tho ?

I need to watch more eps of course, but from the first couple I don't think it's particularly well written and I don't think Ritter pulls off the part 100%.  The comic is A++ top-tier Bendis era writing, so it's basically non-stop Quentin Tarantino quality dialogue exchanges.  The TV writing feels extremely sparse and dumbed down in comparison imo.  Is it well written for a TV show about superheros?  Maybe?  But I'd be surprised if anyone who watched the TV show said the dialogue reminded them of Tarantino or Mamet or something.

I'm sure it's a good show and people will really like it.  I'm just being cranky because it doesn't seem like a particularly faithful/good adaptation and that bugs me because I'm a really big fan of the source material.  I mean I have the same issues with Game of Thrones but I'd say GoT is closer to the source material than what I've seen of JJ.

For some reason I waited until now to watch The Newsroom and I'm happy to add this to the stable of HBO shows I absolutely adore. Sure, the forced romance subplots get pretty cringeworthy from time to time, but mostly I just get treated to a behind-the-scenes-of-producing-a-television-show drama, which is apparently like catnip for me. Almost done with season 2.

Yeah it loses a lot of it's steam around episode 8 or 9. Biggest thing that hurt imo, is it needed more subplots. Weird to say but the problem was Kilgrave was too much of an IMMEDIATE threat way too early in show and it's not fun to have your bad guy basically slip through your fingers a COUPLE times in a 13 episode series. It feels cheap.

And the red dragon could probably been developed a little more and/or better. I really appreciated how wild gay the ending was tho.

Fargo continues to be very engaging but to rebound on the discussion we briefly had about the previous season, I have to say that the writing in S2 do rely a lot on stretching disbelief quite a bit.

The butcher guy apparently getting to his home on foot before the police in a car... and I forgot the details but apparently Peggy was still in the cave of her house all along. That means the Danson character woke up and just bolted out without inspecting the house ? I'm a bit fuzzy with the details here but that whole ping pong between their home and the police station feels contrived.

I wasn't bothered as much by that in S1, and I think that it did a better job of having that borderline supernatural tone to make it work anyway. I guess the whole UFO motif will serve as that here but it's been pretty minor so far.

Also that fake old movie was terrible. I know the intro played with that, but it was just on set. I'm baffled that a series with such obvious care to aesthetics would shit the bed that bad. It looked nothing like the real thing.

EDIT : Actors are killing it tho. Dunst is phenomenal in this and I'm not a big fan generally.
