If I'm not mistaken, doesn't the "no commercials" tier actually mean "fewer commercials"? Pretty sure there is nothing on hulu that airs totally ad-free, even if it's a short ad before the show.

I think that was only for a few shows on grandfathered deals when the ad-free tier released.
I haven't seen an ad on Hulu in a couple of years.
Pretty sure no commercials means exactly that now.

Another beloved comedy series is coming back for a new installment on its original network. CBS has given a 13-episode series order to Murphy Brown, a revival of the 1988 sitcom with its creator Diane English and star Candice Bergen both set to return.

...

Bergen will reprise her role as the famous investigative journalist and TV anchor at the FYI network, as Murphy Brown returns to a world of cable news, social media, fake news and a very different political and cultural climate. I hear talks are underway with other original cast members to return.

I really liked murphy brown but that's like the weirdest show ever to be considered for a revival. It was so of its time, that it might as well have come out with the mary tyler moore show. Can newhart revival be far beyond this lol.

Good on them though for trying it.

seems like the kind of thing that they might do as a semi-reboot, with a new generation main cast that does all the typical storylines while Murphy oversees and mentors them while also trying to deal with the new media world

Ted Danson's character on Bored to Death had some plotlines dealing with the changing environment of print media but i'm trying to think of other comedies that covered this kind of thing

i guess this idea is kinda what Scrubs attempted

Need Moonlighting reboot.

On a serious note, I actually think a new moonlighting with younger people in the leads would actually do pretty well.

Anyone give the Black Lightning show a try?

Looked at the imdb page and the top user review was some guy crying about Social Studies Warrior content. Even if it's crap, the way it handles social commentary might make it a decent watch. (If it's as shit as the review guy makes it sound like.)

Edit: Starts out with black folks namedropping a bunch of famous black activists. They then almost get arrested by crazy white folks. So far, so good. :)

And got around to finishing up the second season of expanse. Just really good stuff.

It's now my favorite show on TV. Not saying its the best show on TV (although it is pretty damn great). Just saying for my own personal interests which always lean towards sci-fi material, its the best thing going.

The last season of the sopranos has to be one of the most schizo and unfocused seasons for a show. It switches directions every other episode. Some of it is really entertaining but it culminated in such an empty ending.

The entire season is filled with good scenes but the season as a whole adds up to a lot of meh. It seems like they had a lot of good ideas and decided to throw them in with really light connections.

I'm all caught up with The Magicians and I'm not sure why. I suppose I like the world of the story and the characters can be amusing, but mostly the characters suck. And the amusing characters are also the worst ones at times.

It's basically CS Lewis as told by Millennials. Whatever they forget to account for they replace with giant spoonfulls of sexual tension.

Like The Knick, Deadwood, Gangs of New York, and other down-in-the-muck period pieces, this is a series that doesn’t offer much in the way of historical sugarcoating. Certain storytellers build worlds so all-enveloping that you find yourself being led by the nose for hours at a time, even as you make a mental list of all the elements that could’ve been done better. The New York of The Alienist is a hellhole painted in broad strokes, with some fine brushwork happening in the margins.

The first episode of Counterpart was pretty good, though I'm sure they'll Starz it up after a couple seasons.

I dug that Waco show too, though seriously is there some kind of closet that casting directors just pull character actors previously employed by HBO out of? I kind of wish I didn't know Waco was real so I could just pretend the whole thing was some kind of mash-up of characters from the HBO Extended Universe

Assassination of Gianni Versace is great so far, but it bugs me knowing how much material the writers had to fabricate. I wish there were a little indicator in the corner of the screen that specified the truth ones of any given scene.

Only two eps in and im not familar with the book it's based on but it feels like every decent selling scifi novel I've ever read so far. Joe Cool Dude is cool outside and regularly does dope shit while stopping between fucking and violence to contemplate what it means to be alive, or human, or you get the idea.

Watched the first episode yesterday, I approve.  Production values are insane for a tv show.

I dont remember anything from the book expect that I liked it and that it was pretty bad ass. So far the show delivers.

Finished Altered Carbon

Really liked it overall. They got many things right. Apparently Poe was a change from the book, but he was a great part of the story.

My two criticisms would be that the plot gets really convoluted over the stretch of the series and that the final two episodes drag a bit. The noir tropes did not bother me at all because I felt the acting was good. Also, the requirement of the acting for the sci-fi was unique and pulled off well. The one actor who had to play three personas made each character feel like they were speaking from his body. And the male actor for Ava made me believe he really was a mom.

Production values were very impressive. The world felt real and thought out. Loved the Golden Gate bridge turning into a flea market skid row.

Also, the show could be retitled: Everything but Joel's Dong

Watched the first episode of Altered Carbon and it's pretty, but they made some weird changes from the book. Nothing that ruins the show for me, but I'd love to see an interview with the show runners to see why they did this.

If you want to know what they are, I'll put them in spoilers below. They don't ruin the plot.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kovacs isn't a rebel freedom fighter in the book. He was a UN Envoy super soldier who burns out and ends up becoming a mercenary. He doesn't have a sister and Quell is just a legendary warrior philosopher that dies long before him. He never knew her personally.

Also, the hotel was called The Hendrix, and later on in the book the AI looks like Jimi. I'm guessing they ran into issues with his family who are pretty lawsuit happy.

Just started Altered Carbon. It's pretty alright so far but the language switching is starting to grate on me and I'm only halfway through the first episode.

I like the language switching. As an American, I'm unfortunately accustomed to hispanic families sitting at home and discussing their business en Inglés, with massive Spanish accents. It felt more authentic having two detectives use the language they're most comfortable in, but still understanding each other.

Also, I am love-love-loving this show. There are a few shabby bits; the impoverished black marine isn't selling the role for me, and I was unsure about Mrs. Bancroft until she also portrayed a different character and sold that for me. Martha Higareda, the spitfire playing Detective Ortega, is pretty amazing, and I thought Joel Kinnaman was the best part of both Robocop and Suicide Squad. The sets are well integrated into the greenscreen stuff. The world feels well-established, just four episodes in. It's very respectful of the books.
