2018 US Midterm Elections: yay, nay, or gay?
Seriously, this is in slightly under a year. Why make this thread?
This is a recursivelyenumerable thread, so there's probably some kind of meta-narrative

If you're registered: Show up to your polling place on the Tuesday in November that they decide to hold the election on. Vote after showing your voter ID.im not going anywhere, if i cant mail this shit in fuck that.

I've got to look into how to vote on mid-term elections from Japan. I've only been voting in the four-year elections. :-\
Not to mention there's Trump, who goes into beast mode during campaign season.

Where are you registered to vote back home? Can you help vote Nunes' stupid fucking punk ass out of office?
I read that cocaine Mitch wants to confirm the new SCOTUS right before the election as part of the 'owning the libs' ritual.
In any case the Chinese tradewar won't get very far. Trump will meet up with Xi, do some mumbo jumbo diplomacy, sign a few worthless papers and return home the victor.
From what I'm seeing the GOP has over 50 million in cash and the DNC is flat broke.
If the Dems are stupid enough to run on abolishing ICE like a reverse Rick Perry. Plus they keep foaming at the mouth and screaming Russia while at the same time having party dinosaurs write op-ed's against outsider candidates they have no chance against the well tuned conservative Super PAC machine.
Not to mention there's Trump, who goes into beast mode during campaign season. He will sucker up all the press and media attention for starters.
What the Dems need more than anything is a charismatic leader with a clear message that does not include the words Russia or Trump.
Oh and to tell Clinton to go take a long walk in the woods and avoid any and all cameras.
Looking forward to seeing democrats lose tbh.
Going back and forth between voting Cruz and leaving it blank. Leaning on a blank.
I didn't vote in the last election, but I'm definitely voting Trump's ass out in this election.
By not voting in the last election, you literally voted for Trump, you fuggin nazi frick

Well, hopefully they learned their lesson and won't schedule the elections around any important media property releases this time. :maf
When you're so emotionally invested in guns that issues around healthcare, civil rights, and erosions to our democratic-republic becomes irrelevant if the person/party has the audacity to signal a willingness to close the private sale loophole and take a few novelty guns out of public circulation.

To me guns are civil rights and also a human right though, which you don't seem to understand. And Beto wants to ban "assault rifles", so definitely not anything novelty. I find the Democratic answer for their reasons for assault rifle gun bans wanting, so I won't be voting for Beto, especially in a time of such social division.
I mean, you admit yourself here,"erosions to our democratic-republic" which is precisely why someone should not support any gun ban. It's like you can't put two and two together. I don't want any gun ban *because* of the erosion in our democracy.

What kind of guns do you recommend for reinstating the VRA? I'm new at this.
RCP Averages:
NV: Rosen +0.6
AZ: Sinema +7.0
TN: Bredesen +4.5
I also highly doubt Rosen is in as much danger as her RCP average suggests.

Ah yes, I need my guns more than ever because I am going to continue to stand aside while the party I confer that benefit to tears our democracy and civic rights down further and further. Interesting logic lol
Honestly though, I respect you as a person Cindi, but even my patience left me some time ago trying to reason with you on American gun politics and how you clearly let that drive you around in the rest of your politics. I don't know what it is about a large swath of gun enthusiasts, but it seems once they get hooked on that endorphin rush, facts, logic, and a rational balancing of political equities just exits the topic equation forever.
They are only talking about banning the only weapon to be used in every mass shooting this decade. Not all guns.
The heads of America's intelligence agencies made it clear today that these elections will be tampered with, so we can close the thread now and be glad there's no need to get out and vote :rejoice
I feel the disinterested observer schtick doesn't jibe that well with arming yourself for a fictional civil war.

It's the one that comes with the swing vote on the Supreme Court in the box. I think the Manufacturer is Article II or something like that, I'm not a gun enthusiast though so I dunno for sure.I don't want any gun ban *because* of the erosion in our democracy.

While we don’t have any good sources of data on how often zombies take over the world, we definitely have good sources of data on when the group of people on the piece of dirt we currently call the USA attempt to overthrow the ruling government. It’s happened twice since colonization. The first one, the American Revolution, succeeded. The second one, the Civil War, failed. But they are both qualifying events. No, they aren't. Neither the rebelling colonies nor the Confederacy tried to overthrow the ruling government. Locally even, they were the ruling governments and far more so than today, especially the first one where it took weeks for the higher level ruling government to cross the ocean and vice versa. So his 37% chance of a "revolution" is closer to 0% by his stated standards.
In 2010, 8.5 million tourists visited Syria, accounting for 14% of their entire GDP. Eight years later, they have almost half a million dead citizens, and ten million more displaced into Europe. They didn’t see this coming, because if they did, they would have fled sooner. Nobody notices the signs of impending doom unless they’re looking carefully.well shit, i just found out i have disproportionate faith in the state
...
Pretend you’re someone with your eyes on the horizon. What would you be looking for, exactly? Increasing partisanship. Civil disorder. Coup rhetoric. A widening wealth gap. A further entrenching oligarchy. Dysfunctional governance. The rise of violent extremist ideologies such as Nazism and Communism. Violent street protests. People marching with masks and dressing like the Italian Blackshirts. Attempts at large scale political assassination. Any one of those might not necessarily be the canary in the coal mine, but all of them in aggregate might be alarming to someone with their eyes on the horizon. Someone with disproportionate faith in the state is naturally inclined to disregard these sorts of events as a cognitive bias, while someone with little faith in the state might take these signs to mean they should buy a few more boxes of ammunition.

Food stockpiles
Access to clean (or cleanable) water
Shelter that exists away from the zombies (a.k.a. other citizens)
Subsistence agriculture
Medicinal supplies
A way to defend items 1–5. In modern terms, that means firearms. Rifles in particular.
Optional: Escape method. Sailboats rank highly on any objective list here.

Is the fear that they'll vote for something and then leave? You mean like what you're doing to the Democrats?
Are you responding to Cindi or Assimilate
It's not really unusual or unreasonable for citizens to have access to rights that others don't, like non-citizens, or citizens with felonies, or people who are married to citizens and have kids that are citizens, or citizens who live in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or... actually your honor, I'd like this post to be stricken from the record...
Not to mention the fact that fraudulent/illegal voting happens at such a low (as in super fucking low) level that the only reason to hand wring over it is to...you know, incite racists and dumb people.
Nah, don't see it. 60+ districts are more competitive than the PA and OH ones that garnered so much attention. I think dems take at least 30 seats but wouldn't be surprised if it's closer to 40. Just swamping the Cali GOP seats and winning the newly created (and favorable) PA seats gets democrats pretty damn close to the majority.
On the flip side, I don't think democrats can take the senate unless something drastic happens. They basically have to run the table perfectly to get it done. It's looking like democrats could win 3 seats and lose 2-3.
The GOP are essentially guaranteed to lose two (NV and AZ). The Dems aren't guaranteed to lose any. The incumbent is probably favored in each individual race.
I'm lucky enough to work in tech, and for a company that's done well. There's no better investment for my kids' future right now than to fight back against the corrupt and hateful GOP, intent on giving themselves more money. I'm not rich as some would define it--but I am in all the ways that matter, and let me tell you: We rich people don't need any more money. What we need is to be a part of a nation of justice, peace, and freedom.:comeon
So I liquidated a chunk of my stock and gave about $1,200 to nine Democratic candidates. And I'm not done volunteering or helping to organize. The Blue Wave is real, friends, and I want you to know that I'm with you 100%. Let's do this.

Let’s face it, I am the law
By Shiv Harsh
Everyone is the same under the law. Except for those who are not. Nobody is above the law. Except for those who are. Or should be. Like me.
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t have a God complex. But I am in an unusual position. Though not God, or even a saint, I am approaching territory where I should not be treated like other mortal human beings. Why? Because I have unique gifts.
I am talented in a way few people are. I can help you. I can help my neighbors, my community, our country. Hey, I can help the whole world. There have been very few human beings like me in the history of this world. You’re lucky to have someone of my ability at this critical point in our history.
Why? Look at me. I am a smart guy. I am smarter than most politicians. In fact, I am smarter than any politician who has ever existed. Just look at me. Don’t I look smart? I can diagnose heart disease. I can diagnose all kinds of other diseases, too. And have done so for decades. Diagnosing and treating the ills of this nation will be a snap.
But that would just be a start. It would be a waste of my enormous abilities to confine my excellence to just one nation. The whole world stands to benefit from my gifts. But I have to start somewhere. Once I fix the problems of this nation, the rest of the world will take notice. They may appoint me as a kind of free-standing global czar, spreading munificence left, right and center.
But first you have to elect me. No, elections are for losers. Someone of my caliber must be crowned. It would be in the interests of this nation to have a coronation. We have had elections for far too long. Excellence must be rewarded by coronation. No, I’m not talking about having a king. Although it would be nice, wouldn’t it, if you guys made me king? But I don’t like the idea of kings and queens, as currently in vogue. You are king, and your son or daughter succeeds you, even if they are morons. Not good. What would be better? Take people like me, talented beyond belief, nominate them, and then everybody bow and get out of the way. And, of course, every red-blooded citizen then votes for me. Very democratic.
But we have to cut a deal. I don’t like dissent. You wouldn’t either, if you were supremely gifted, and knew what was best for the country, even before the rest of the country had figured it out. I don’t have to be your leader. I have plenty of other things to do. I have made tons of money. But I want to make more. My kids are not nearly as talented as I am. They need to be taken care of.
So shall we move forward? You ready to deal? Because I am always ready to deal.
What can I do for you? More than any other leader in the history of mankind. The problems you guys have? Solving them is a piece of cake. But only for me. The other folks littering the landscape are no good. They are low-energy. You need energy to do this job. I am full of energy.
You want specifics? I will make all of you rich. Everybody I know is rich. They became rich by exploiting others. Sorry, just kidding. But I do know the secret to wealth. And I will bring enormous wealth to you. Now some people will lose out. But not that many. And you do need some losers in this world. Otherwise who will do the dirty work that we are too proud or lazy or snobbish to do ourselves?
But I need something in return. I will be the law. My word will be the law. No dissent. Just shut up and let me go about my business. I know what I am doing. I might bend the law a little, but who will know? Because I am the law. And you will reap huge rewards. At least those of you who don’t stand in my way.
The other day I got an unsolicited text message from a campaigner that said: [Democratic Party politician] is running to represent [my state senate district number] in the state senate, where he'll fight for [redacted], small businesses, and workers' rights.
All I could do was the Jim Halpert stare at the camera thing.
So what was in this building before historical materialism?'
'Before what?'
'You know, back then, under the old regime?'
'Oh. Under the old regime my master lived here.'
'A bourgeois?'
'You're a bourgeois yourself! He wasn't a bourgeois. He was a marshal of the nobility.'
'So he was a proletarian, then?'
'You're a proletarian yourself! I told you loud and clear, a marshal.'
The conversation with the clever dvornik with a vague understanding of the class structure of society would have lasted god knows how long if the young man hadn't made a decisive move.
IP1 advances a worthy goal by encouraging more eligible Nevadans to register to vote. However, such a result must partner with sound policy. IP1 fails this test because it extinguishes a fundamental, individual choice—the right of eligible voters to decide for themselves whether they desire to apply to register to vote—forfeiting this basic decision to state government. … the core freedom of deciding whether one wishes to initiate voter registration belongs to the individual, not the government.
Moreover, if IP1 became law, it would create an unnecessary risk that people who are not qualified voters may unintentionally apply to vote, subjecting them to possible criminal prosecution, fines, and other legal action.

we've known for some time that ad saturation doesn't even turn out your own voters, i wouldn't be surprised if its main effect was to turn off the leaners/independents from even bothering to pay attention closely, even late or at once considered "key" moments in campaigns (debates, conventions, etc.) but i don't really keep up to date on that wing of the field
i also wouldn't be surprised if incessant polling reporting also has negative "unanticipated" effects, especially among potentially key cleavages
plus campaigns do all their own polling anyway

Beto is going to lose. I shouldn’t be mad because I knew this would happen but it does because he had a complete open shot and ran like a moron. What terrible campaign strategy.
They almost didn't let me vote because I have no Nevada ID. But I had my voter registration card and my California ID. After a 3 minute back and forth the guy said "fuck it, it's government issued". Demonrat lieberals really are fraudsters!
I want Beto to win to make Willie Nelson happy.
I cast one lone vote against Mike Dewine today. That's all my ballot said, "Not Mike Dewine".

It’s the day after Election Day, and Democrats just handed Republicans the GOP’s collective asses. Though the sheer magnitude of the Republican loss remains uncertain — ballots are still being counted, and blue California may take weeks to complete its count — early projections suggest that Democratic House candidates may have won the national popular vote by 7 points.
That’s a bigger margin of victory than the Republican wave in 2010 (6.8 points) or the GOP wave in 2014 (5.7 points).
And yet, it wasn’t enough. Republicans will hold the Senate and, with it, the power to fill the federal courts with Republican stalwarts.
The numbers are still coming in as I write this just after the witching hour of Election Night, but Democrats seem poised for one of the biggest midterm landslide victories in modern history.
...
In a sane electoral system, such a resoundingly clear result would mean sweeping new powers for the winning party.
...
But the victory for Democrats feels underwhelming. That’s partly due to stinging defeats in high-profile races in Florida, Georgia, and Ohio that Democrats had hoped to win, as well as tough Senate losses in states like Missouri and Indiana that Democrats knew were uphill battles but had still hoped to eke out.
But it’s mostly due to the fact that the American electoral system is functionally broken in a way that gives Republicans enormous unearned advantages.
...
And then, of course, there’s the Senate. Our own Martin Longman and many others have already covered this in depth, but the U.S. Senate no longer has any reason to exist
As Europeans woke up to the results of the 2018 midterm elections on Wednesday, their primary question — what next for a president who is so deeply unpopular here? — remained largely unanswered.
But European news networks still dedicated hours-long specials to the key vote. And while viewers here tried to make sense of the results, they repeatedly stumbled over two numbers: the total votes for Democratic and Republican Senate candidates. More than 45 million Americans voted for Democratic Senate candidates vs. about 33 million for Republican contenders, according to figures updated around 11 a.m. Eastern time Wednesday.
As the animated TV graphics clearly showed, though, it was Republicans who ended the night in control of the Senate — not the Democrats. “An extraordinary electoral system,” tweeted an incredulous state secretary in the German state of Hesse.
So how could Democrats outpace Republicans by more than 10 million votes and still fall further behind in the Senate?
Although Republicans retained control of the Senate during this year's midterm elections, Democrats actually earned about 11 million more votes.
Reported vote counts show that Democratic Senate candidates this year thus far have won roughly 44 million votes, whereas Republican Senate candidates have earned 33 million, per The Washington Post. That means about 57 percent of the total votes cast went for Senate Democrats. Despite those stats, Republicans managed to flip three seats, bolstering their majority.
Anybody have a link to comprehensive state-level results? From what little I've seen [mostly governors racers], Dems did pretty well there, too.Apologies again for not actually answering this post, but go to the NYTimes page: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/11/06/us/elections/results-governor-elections.html

Dennis Hof bested Democratic opponent Lesia Romanov with 62 percent of the vote.:american A real victory for America! :american
Hof campaign manager Chuck Muth, who was watching the results at the Bunny Ranch bar in Mound House, said the win is bittersweet, as he wished Hof could be around to celebrate with him.
“I have never been in a campaign like this with the stuff they threw at Dennis — it was everything and the kitchen sink,” Muth said. “Unsubstantiated accusations of sexual assault came out … then all the Republicans that came out that weren’t going to support him. It was a brutal campaign, and we wish he was here to enjoy it, but we’re going to do shots and try to enjoy it for him.”
Hof was found dead Oct. 16 at his Love Ranch South brothel just outside of Pahrump two days after celebrating his 72nd birthday. But, by law, his name remained on the ballot.

Republican-ish dude I know lost every single race on his ballot including the proposals, except for County District Commissioner which the years old incumbent guy won by like 184 votes. The D's also swept that commission aside from the same seat for the first time in eons.
First time since 2006 this would have happened to him, but he wasn't old enough to vote then.

Yep, AIA is back. Everyone that disagrees is a liar or a moron, but please don't be mean.

My line has always been crooked, who's shook? Hope all is well.Working less hours for more money so all is well here. I may bitch but it's good that faces I recognize are posting again. If nothing else it'll raise the collective blood pressure here but better slow down while people are sore over the election.

How's the weather up there? This is about the time of year I remember why I left Cleveland and smile.
I think everyone just sorta forgot that AiA can be a worse reader than Assi.
Now I know youre lying or you don't know how it works or won't say you've heard. How's the snow up there?
Ive invested more money in foodstuff then you'll make in your life. Not insulting, just saying...know who youre talking too before you obfuscate.

I can gladly have the moderators here validate my employment if that's what you require. You're rambling about shit no one cares about and about things that make no sense.
guys I'm catching up on the thread and aia says if we keep making fun of farmers with sarcasm that they will stop growing food
this got wild
Funny enough I probably voted for more Reps this election than any since 2004
Stop making assumptions and you'll get better conversation.
You can look through my post history and see what I've posted previously. If it's a lie, then I've been consistent.
I voted straight D not because of Trump, only because I'm tired of the corruption in my state. I'm sick of the local GOP and was hoping this election would give them a jolt. Unfortunately I am a minority within the majority.

I tend to do this. You'll get use to it. I'm argumentative and wrong, witty and stupid, etc. Just roll with it.

"Please give us your address, so we can use that data to put you on mailing lists for life"I'm not convinced this isn't the main underlying goal of modern politics. Similar to the NSA's whole "collect all the data in the world, store it forever, then figure out how to parse it later, maybe" plan.

It's not shown on the chart, but the last time that turnout was this high in a midterm election was 1914.
2020 could be the next 2008: Dems ride the momentum of a big midterm win against an unpopular GOP president, add the presidential cycle youth turnout for a second consecutive wave election, taking the White House just as the economy craters, completely bogging down the new administration and leading to a wipeout in 2022 as people start freaking out about the "deficit" again. Only this time there aren't enough Senate seats to pass anything and whatever you get through there is knocked down by the Supreme Court 6-3 cause RBG croaked.

. That being said the direct effect of most politicians on ones life is very small. I'm also saying that as a no-homo white dude so experience may vary.
I mean it can happen, and it has actually happened to me - where the liberals have invested a ton of money into retaining people in tech to stay in Canada and promoting the Canadian tech industry. So when I started grad school it was nearly a guarantee that I would have to work in the US and now I don't have to. That being said the direct effect of most politicians on ones life is very small.
