I Am would be borderline classic if the OG version had come out, before it leaked. Just subtracting a few of the horrible tracks (Big Things especially) and adding something like Black Zombie, Purple, Poppa Was A Player, etc would have worked wonders.

Honestly if he just didn't release Nastradamus Jay-Z would have had no argument against him in 2001. Sometimes I lie awake late at night clenching my fist, wondering how things might have been different if only the god didn't release that album.

I Am...it starts great. NY State of Mind II, Hate Me Now, Small World, Favor For a Favor, We Will Survive...all solid to dope. Ghetto Prisoners is aite. You Won't See Me Tonight, fine whatever. Not a bad single, I'd keep it.

And then I Want To Talk To You arrives...that shit is like the beginning of the corny shit. Dr Knockbot is next, one of the worst tracks ever. Life Is What You Make It is a classic collab, way better than Jay's track with DMX. Big Things is one of the worst rap songs of the 90s. Nas Is Like, classic obviously. Kissing...smh, Money Is My Bitch is aite. Undying Love is classic.

basically if the tracklist looked like this:

Intro
NY State Of Mind Part II
Hate Me Now
Small World
Favor For A Favor
We Will Survive
Ghetto Prisoners
You Won't See Me Tonight
I Want To Talk To You
(Come Get Me)
Life Is What You Make It
(Project Window)
Nas Is Like
(Purple)
Money Is My Bitch
Undying Love

it becomes a solid to great album. Instead it's a frustrating 3/5 at best.

Sorry,  Life is What You Make it isn't better than Money Cash Hoes. Not in quality, relevance,  nothing.

Edit: its not better than Blackout either :umad
:lol

MCH is a bad song, bad beat, etc. Life Is What You Make It is great.

Getting video and movie cross promotion has nothing to do with being "good enough." 90s hip hop was full of horrible cross movie promotions to get black asses into the theater.

Nor do the follow ups have anything to do with the quality of the first one; MCH isn't even the first time Jay and X were on the same track. They were two of the three biggest NY rappers in the world, of course it was a big collab. BTW it was the third single off the album and largely a street single, let's not pretend like it was a huge song. Didn't chart on the Hot 100, peaked at #36 on the hip hop/r&b chart, and #19 on the rap tracks chart.

and let's not forget DMX did a movie with Nas a year before MCH/Life Is What You Make It

Quote
The soundtrack was a success, peaking at #5 on the Billboard 200 and #2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and spawned the single "Grand Finale" by rappers DMX, Method Man, Nas and Ja Rule. "Grand Finale" made it to #63 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks and #18 on the Hot Rap Singles.

And yet you haven't prove that Jay's collab was more successful in any meaningful way. With respect to the cover, we gonna pretend like Jay and Irv Gotti weren't best friends? Irv gets credit for bringing them together, but obviously shit didn't come to fruition. Just as Gotti's plan to sign Nas to Murder Inc didn't come to fruition.

Belly was a multi million dollar grossing film breh, and the soundtrack went plat. :whew

Freddie Gibbs is one of the best MCs ever to take his ski mask off long enough to spit a 16, and Madlib makes better beats than Jesus would if Jesus made beats. On this record, like Spade and Farley before them, they bring out the best in each other: Freddie becomes a psychedelic drug-thug cowboy, ready to save the day by completely trashing it, and Madlib sounds like he’s been sharpening his rare 45s so he could throw one and cut your head off. Please note that this review is biased because the last time I hung out with Freddie he got me so faded off lean and haze I was huffing laps around the editorial office trying not to have a panic attack. - Drew Millwad of Vice

Vince Staples made me a believer with the Stolen Youth album. And then I felt dumb when I later learned Larry Fisherman=Mac Miller. I had no idea.

His music seems like it would be kind of ehh live. Seems almost out of place on the Schoolboy Q/Isiah Rashad tour considering both are energetic performers whereas he doesn't seem to be.

Why would anyone think he'd be a good live performer, also doesn't diminish from the quality of his album output whatsoever...So no Vince Staples is still the shit, and if you're expecting Q to be a great performer you're in for a grave dissappointment.

I had no thoughts about him beforehand. I've never heard anything from Vince Staples before seeing him live. And now I don't want to.

Q is a good performer. I've seen him 4 times now and he always riles up the crowd. Only place where he disappointed was at Made In America music festival which was really just Kendrick and friends.

GZA really hasn't put out a lot in comparison to other primary Wu members, and as such I'd put Ghostface's output on an entirely different level of consistency. I mean Raekwon has as many hot albums as GZA, though obvioiusly nothing quite as masterful as Liquid Swords.

The sad thing is that so many rappers have dope crews these days, yet Gibbs is surrounded by some of the absolute worst. Bronson has Meyhem Lauren, AG The Coroner, J-Love, etc. Kendrick has Jay Rock, Soul, Q. Curren$y has Fiend and Young Roddy. This dude has some straight out the gutter dudes who can barely put one sentence together, much less 16 bars. SMH.

2Pac always picked the worse rappers to be featured on his songs with very few exceptions of good or not bad enough to almost ruin the song. So many tracks where it should have been just him.
