The Apollo Brown version>>>>

But yea, Ghost will actually be rapping over some funky shit with bass and not soulless soul imitations. I have hope. That Gunshowers track is hot.

It's pretty amazing. Quik is possibly the only rapper who's been making albums for two and a half decades without sounding like a parody of himself, rapwise. His production keeps getting more and more left field, and his stream of consciousness lyrics are as batshit as ever, but somehow he manages to keep it in check enough to not be corny. The first track is a probably the most knowing reference to how offbeat he is, but Trapped On The Tracks might be the best example of it in his career.

Good interview with him here, and much more thorough than certain awful hot 97 hosts recent shows: https://soundcloud.com/bullseye-with-jesse-thorn/dj-quik-1

Finally got around to listening to the Vince Staples EP. Very good but man....on one hand I want to say Def Jam fucked up, on the other hand it's understandable given the climate of the industry. If Vince had just released this as an album including the better tracks on Shyne Coldchain Vol 2 (Nate, Turn, Progressive3, Trunk Rattle) it would be an easy AOTY candidate. The EP is already getting praise, add those songs and it would be a wrap.

I assume Def Jam made him release the EP to make up for the LP being delayed. But I don't see how he can come back with something harder than this.

BTW I called this months ago: No I.D. is the equivalent of a good college coach. He has Vince focused and releasing some amazing music right now. I remember Nas saying that No I.D. would spend hours in the studio just talking about shit - be it life, concepts for songs, whatever. You can definitely tell he is in Vince's ear.

Easily her best project IMO. It's not another project of her rapping over same-y 9th Wonder soul beats, the production is lush and she's weaving in and out like a pro.

I can't think of many rappers or producers who have improved more than him since 2006. Even Shut It Down is pretty awkward rap wise. That beat is undeniably hot but he's rather ehh on the mic. Each project has shown growth and now he's riding his beats like a pro. And production wise he has moved away from soul samples. Still a master chopper though.

Anything from him before No Poison No Paradise that I should listen to?

Nah. To be fair KRIT's flow has improved/diversified. That Cadillacica track is pretty impressive flow wise.

I'd say he hasn't improved as a songwriter and struggles to produce without samples. Should have stayed independent...

yeah but my expectations for an alc verse arent that high, so it usually works.

his second verse on Swimteam Rastas is great.  When he delivers a good verse it's just a bonus.  As long as you're on beat, that to me is paramount, but the beats gotta be good first and foremost.

Ppl stay criticizing Krits rapping but we all know the real problem is how boring of a personality he is

I always thought his mixtapes had some smooth beats, but nothing about him actually stood out to me.

Yea he's like the southern Groundhog's Day. Wake up, eat breakfast with grandma, reveal the Cadillac, ride on 22s, call up your side chick, eat some chicken, sub sub sub, candy paint, introspective moment at a stop sign, call your main chick, smash her, ride home.

I'll admit he branched out with his debut album but it felt stale. I don't think he should stop riding cars and candy painting, just throw in some more vunerable stuff like The Vent, that doesn't feel like he's just checking off a "conscious issue" list like J Cole.

Apollo Brown and Ras Kass leaked about 2 days ago

Apollo continues to impress me with his production but Ras' flow is a bit too subdued for me on this and lyrically he can do much better. I'm noticing this happening to more than a few 90s rappers still making music today and I'm not sure if I can blame it on age considering a dude like Ghostface has to be in his mid-40s at this point and he's as potent as ever.

True but the project has some very strong tracks. When Kass is on he's really fucking on. When he's off it's subdued and average as you said. Overall I think this is a dope album though. Couple bad tracks (Giraffe Pussy).

I bought this tape for a quarter a few months ago at a yard sale and never listened to it until now.  The whole album is some crazy preachy shit but the above track wherein Michael Stipe and KRS rap about the ozone layer is probably the best sing track summation of the project.  Essential WTF listening.
