Dunno. Illmatic isn't classic simply because it's a really great album, it's classic because of its impact on hip hop. It was and probably still is the golden standard for the genre on multiple levels, it's one of the first rap albums with multiple "super" producers, flow wise Nas turned the page on an entire era, etc.

GKMC is interesting because it's arguably the only undeniable classic of the new-ish generation (Drake, Cole, etc). In terms of influence you can easily point to the west coast's re-emergence on the mainstream level after that album's release/success.

TPAB is a better album to me but it's too early to call it classic, and I'm not sure it'll have the same impact. I could see it going down as a classic album, but perhaps not a "hip hop classic." My argument would be that TPAB has had an undeniable impact on jazz's popularity, and heralded the later success of Kamasi Washington's The Epic, which has been a stunning success for a jazz album and has rightfully received nearly every accolade imaginable. But in terms of hip hop I don't believe the genre is going to move an inch towards any direction Kendrick took with the album. TPAB isn't the first jazz rap album, and most of them haven't changed the trajectory of the genre.

Perhaps you could argue that the social message of the album might have more impact than the instrumentation focus. Beyonce's album seems like it was clearly influenced by TPAB for instance, and if we see hip hop take a more clear stance on Black Lives Matter/activism perhaps Kendrick will get credit.

🙏
Wish I could like this twice. Articulated what I've been feeling on the topic much better than I've been able to myself.

Also Chance 3 is great so far. Glad he dragged Francis and The Lights out of whatever stair closet Drake stuffed them in a decade ago

Yup, and I'd argue some artists have better mixtapes than albums.

XXX was sold as an album iirc. And as I said it's a classic to me, easily the best of that 2010s revival of weed/pill rap.

I'm conflicted. On one hand the difference between albums and mixtapes are minor now. Gone are the days when mixtape meant a collection of unreleased songs DJ Clue illegally acquired from someone at a label. Mixtapes are basically albums that couldn't get sample clearances now.

But I flip flop and scoff when I see something like...Cole celebrating the five year anniversary of a mixtape and claiming its classic. That shit annoys me. Still I think I'll settle for mixtapes being treated like albums as long as it consists of a majority of new material/songs.

I said ,"Yeah." Thus I listened to militant rap whilst playing games like FF7 and Resident Evil.

Got into a convo with DJ HouseShoes on twitter. Basically dude is upset about Gucci being called a "cultural icon" and "legend." But like seriously...Gucci is probably the most influential rapper of the last decade. You don't have to like his music, I certainly don't outside of a couple songs...but the influence cannot be denied. There are a lot of people who don't seem to get that the typical Hov/Nas/Biggie/Pac worldview doesn't exist for an entire generation of rap fans. Hell a lot of these kids don't really give a fuck about Kanye outside of 808s and Heartbreaks, maybe Graduation. You expect a 15 year old kid from Atlanta to give a fuck about Reasonable Doubt?

It is what it is. I'm not gonna be that old dude hating on kids

Gucci absolutely is a legend. He's a great rapper, he's insanely prolific, he's turned nobodies into genuine popstars, and he did so outside of the traditional label system. Cultural icon is a bit of a stretch outside of Atlanta maybe, I actually think he's kind of under recognized by the general public, but he had his moment in the sun too with People vs Radric Davis and Georgia's Most Wanted.

Whenever I think of KRS-One, the song Hush eventually comes to mind since it was in THPS3.  Aside from that I've barely listened to any of his solo work and even less of what he did with BDP.  I'll familiarize myself with their discographies once I get some money.  Sex and Violence seems like a good place to start now that I've seen the 13 and Good video a couple times.

I fuck with the song on a technical level.  I like the structure, production, and his delivery.  Content wise though  :holeup, this is one of the most scust-worthy tracks I’ve heard in a long time.

1) Sympathizes with a rapist
2) Friends seem more concerned with KRS catching a case than the safety of the child
3) Her dad is upset, not because his daughter was just violated, but that he didn’t get to participate

Track is demonic.

BTW, does everyone here know that KRS released and album earlier this year?

King of the Ol' Skool

Looks like trash.  No one even bothered to write a Wikipedia page.

As for the Bambaataa situation, I’m glad those he abused have been courageous enough to come forward.  It sucks that someone with such a big impact on the culture could be so harmful, but it’s good he didn’t get to take this stuff to his grave.  These are our pedophilic heroes.

I can't let the shit slide because it's such a lazy "exposure." Are people so reactionary they believe that KRS would write a song that condones sex with an underage girl, make it a single, shoot a video for it, and have television programming blocks place it on their video countdown? The only rapper vile enough to do anything like that is in jail where he belongs (Sicx...look this piece of shit up and be amazed). The song is doing nothing other than telling you it's a very real occurrence, whether it makes you comfortable or not.

What's killing me though is that this is coming from Star, a dude that got fired from Power 105 for telling DJ Envy "I'll R Kelly your seed fam". But who cares about doing any homework, right?

I'm long removed from being a big enough fan of KRS to fight his battles but I know bullshit when I see it. People are getting played like puppets while this nicca is sitting back like

:yeshrug

He put Africa Bambatty on blast, exposed the Zulu Nation, etc. I can't hate, he gets dap for that. And let's not forget KRS is the one who literally said he doesn't give a fuck who got molested, because hip hop is more important than the lives of children. Fuck him. And KRS is one of my favorite rappers of all time but I gotta throw him in the bushes.

Best thing about that beat is just how interesting it is. Greatest crime of this era is how rap "sound" became homogenized. This shit sounds like a mid 90s uk trip hop beat. It's great.

Side Note: I'm still made more ppl didn't hear the G-Side One album and just totally ape that sound and take it further

write two paragraphs reading too much into a subpar line in a wack verse and accuse someone else of taking the too serious brehs

and yes, using a meme that has already been forgotten as a punchline so that his verse is instantly dated is indeed 2016 jay z to a t
