I'm liking this GOOD Music signee, but I'm worried she's gonna flop.

wonder what this sounded like

Quote
When he began recording again last summer after spending time away, a lot of Q's frustrations bubbled up in the studio. He describes the results of his initial sessions as "depressed rap." "I switched the whole album up as I got into myself and I got comfortable again," he adds. "I told myself, stop crying like a little bitch and do what you love to do."

Fans won't get a taste of the "depressed rap." "None of that shit made the album," Q asserts. "It was like a confession thing. I didn't want people to hear me like that; that depression doesn't last. A few months, and then it was over. Y'all are never hearing them records."

Kinda split on blankface. Not a huge fan of Q doing anderson paak/drake/vince staples impressions on the first 3 tracks but i do like the album. If John Muir was the last track id like it a lot better

It's been nine years? Wow.

I still remember when this album came out. IIRC the first song I heard in advance was So(ul) Amazing, which gave me heavy Common vibes. When it dropped I illegally acquired the album and gave it a spin while working out. I had to cut my workout short because I had to put my full attention behind the album. It's no surprise to you guys that I really value introspective, evocative lyricism. The album is full of it, alongside just about any rap construct you could want at the time.

Blu was my favorite rapper for quite some time, alongside Phonte. His fall from grace is depressing as fuck to me. He clearly didn't want to go mainstream which I have no problem with, but drugs really destroyed him for a long period of time. Breh was really out here leaking unfinished albums onto bandcamp in order to feed his habit.

"I never smoked, I thought it might make me choke"
:tocry

When you listen to the album today you can hear influences that later led to Comeback Season, The Warm Up, The Kendrick Lamar EP etc. Obviously Kanye's influence loons high but people need to stop acting like Blu and Little Brother didn't birth a lot of shit.

That's the textbook type of delusion you'd see from NOI members and other groups that glorify a supreme leader. He's basically saying Bambatty isn't guilty, but even if he was who cares because he...created hip hop.

I'm of two minds about the Rocky stuff.   Black people are expected to be ready to carefully explain their suffering 24/7. It's unfair.  Not every artists needs to cover sociopolitical stuff.  A lot of them can't even do it well.  In a weird way I feel like some people find black pain entertaining.

On the other hand, Rocky comes across as a total bonehead.  He "can't relate" to Mike Brown, "All Lives Matter", and is on some "what about black on black crime" shit? WTF?  I've only read the article since I can't watch a 40 minute interview right now.  Maybe his responses are a bit more nuanced in the video, but based on some quotes from that 2015 interview and other comments he's made, he probably sounds just as bad on YouTube as he does in text.

No one is expecting him to be some super advocate of social issues. But when you say you don't give a fuck about one of the major issues facing black people today because you "live in Soho" there's a problem. I have zero respect for Rocky, Thugger, and all the other rappers who have divorced themselves from social issues. Fuck that.

You don't have to be Kendrick or Beyonce or whatever. But my god I'm giving you an L if you want to pretend like you aren't a black dude from Harlem who has indeed faced problems with police, so you can peddle this myth that you're above the fray. fuckouttahere.

I've thought for awhile that Nas fits perfectly with the Toronto/Drake production sound in terms of hard drums, 90s r&b samples, reverb, etc. 40 has the best beat on Life Is Good, Bye Baby. boi1da has a good track with Nas and I'd love to hear them work some more.

The Nas Album Done beat isn't that but is the type of trap beat Nas can operate on. Even still he does lose the beat after awhile, once he starts going on about racial economic inequality. Sometimes you just gotta keep it simple and flow over a beat you can ride to, nicca.
