Why the hell is Anno 2070 so expensive. Isnt it old as shit?
Should be a daily deal/flash deal. It was this summer I believe.

Has anyone else tried to activate a Steam gift card recently? I got one today and I've been trying since this morning to get it to work, but no dice. Gives me some kind of generic error message.

Baldurs Gate EE is up.

Is it worth it?

20 euro.

As good as BG is, €20 is still a ripoff for such an old game, even with the new content. Wait for a sale or pick up the original version and mod it a bit.

Have you played the Baldur's Gate games before? If not, the first game is good, but it's successor is better in every way and a very big game on it's own. I would get just part 2 if you want to experience a Baldur's Gate game. Also 20 € is really overpriced, I got Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 + the expansions with a pc game magazine dvd for 7 € a couple years ago.

No, it really isn't worth it at the price. The new content is a nice addition, but you can pick up both the Baldur's Gate games pretty cheaply and a lot of what the EE changes [in the way of bugfixes, HD resolutions, and the like] have already been implemented through fan patches over the years. I wouldn't mind having BG on Steam and not having to mess with patches, but not for that price.

But you need to pick up the golden pantaloons from the first game! There also a lot of background stuff that will fly over your head if you haven't played BG 1. Nothing vital but it'll make you appreciate the second game more.

Playing the orginal first would be the perfect way, but I feel a first time player in this age could easily burn out on the series when playing it, that's why I'd advise to go straight for the great stuff. If you like the universe enough to beat the second title, you can always go back to the first one, even if they gameplay may feel more rough after playing the second game.

offline messaging and stuff:
Quote
There's a new Steam Client Beta available. The changes are listed below, please note that due to some changes you may need to opt in to the beta twice.

On Windows, this Beta introduces a change to the way that Steam downloads Steam Client updates. This work is done by Steam.exe, which will update when you join this Beta. You’ll see a new download progress dialog, which means that Steam is using a new HTTP-based method to get the updates. This method is already used by the OSX and linux versions of the Steam Client. In the long run, this method should be faster and more efficient for everybody.

However, there is one quirk due to the fact that the thing which manages the Steam Client Betas is, itself, updating. This only affects users running Windows - the OSX and linux versions of Steam should join the Beta in one step. What you will see when you join the Beta is:
Steam will restart, and update Steam.exe then download a Steam Client package. This will actually be essentially the same files as the non-Beta Steam Client, but in the new format (on disk as individual files, instead of in a gcf file)
If you go to Settings, you’ll see that Steam no longer thinks you are in the Beta. Click “Change. . .” to re-join the Client Beta.
Steam will restart again, this time downloading the full Beta version of the Steam Client.
We apologize for the extra step and downloads – from this point on, your Steam client should update itself like before to keep your Beta version up to date.

With this Steam Client Beta, we've also made some changes to how we organize and announce beta updates:
Added a new Community group for following and discussing Client betas: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta
When a beta update is available, the update dialog will now show Steam Client Beta changes instead of showing only the released client changes.

 Client changes:
Offline messaging: You can now send messages to users who are offline. They will receive the message when they next log in.
Opening a chat dialog with a friend will show some recent chat history
A web chat interface is available, you can find it by navigating to the Steam Community Friend Activity page in your web browser. NOTE: during the beta, web chat users will show as "Online on Mobile Device".
fixed several issues with scroll bars in the store and community views
Added a caps lock warning indicator to the login dialog password textbox
Removed "/me" chat command, which allowed some users to modify the color of their chat text
Fixed forum links opening in external browser windows
Reduced retail install time when reading from optical disc on Windows XP/Vista
Added support for better content sharing between games
Mac: greatly reduced CPU usage and power consumption
Mac: fixed command-W and other keyboard shortcuts
Mac: fixed bugs with window management and the Window menu

Anniversary and Underworld

1-3 have unbearably bad controls (which is a shame, since the games themselves are still pretty good)
Never played 4-6, but they're usually panned
Legend is basically on rails
Anniversary is the best game in the franchise.  It's a remake of 1 with fancy graphics and good controls.
Underworld is almost as good as Anniversary.

And don't forget about Guardian of Light.  It's not a classic Tomb Raider game, but it's still very well made.

Double Fine just bought the rights back to it, like they did with Psychonauts. Although Psychonauts was already on PC/Steam before they bought it, they did release a few patches for it once they got it back.
