I used to debate evolution too, but that was like training wheels for the real pointless internet arguments to come.

... Debating evolution is useless. You can't have a civil discussion with someone that thinks "The Flintstones" is based on actual events.

Miller's Crossing is the closest we'll get to a real film version of Red Harvest.  It was pretty good, but I still think it's one of their weaker movies, due to the casting of Marcia Gay Harden as the female lead.  She has zero chemistry with Gabriel Byrne.

I know a lot of people put Miller's Crossing really high on their Coen list, but I feel the same way. It had a lot of parts that were really good, but it just didn't click with me like some of the others did.

I thought Miller's Crossing was about a 4/5.  Good entertaining movie but not amazing.  I still have everything between Miller's Crossing to The Ladykillers to watch. :hyper

The Ladykillers is their worst movie, although it's not completely irredeemable.

Barton Fink is pretty good, I thought it was a bit better than Miller's Crossing. Can't go wrong with John Goodman either.

The Hudsucker Proxy is a very silly movie, and not one of the Coen's best, but it's great fun with Bruce Campbell providing a brief cameo.

Fargo and The Big Lebowski, while very different, are both great movies.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? is more silly fun and also features more John Goodman goodness.

The Man Who Wasn't There is a slow-moving pot-boiler with Billy Bob Thornton turning in a good performance.

Intolerable Cruelty is a minor Coen film with an average script, but one that's buoyed by George Clooney having a lot of fun in his role.

It's because you make big, declarative statements about stuff without thinking it through first.  Then if anyone ribs you for it, you interpret it as an attack on your intelligence and get super-defensive, and you wind up saying even more things that get you laughed at, and the cycle continues.

Look, it's obvious that you don't have a very strong, well-informed opinion of what is or isn't a melodrama when you have to look up the definition on Wikipedia.  Which is perfectly fine.  But if you do get caught talking about something you're not that familiar with, then the best thing to do is cop to it and move on in good humor, not fight an internet war of attrition over it.

I'm seriously trying to help you here.  At some point you've gotta look at your post history and see the pattern, right?

I've made my case for why Titanic isn't a melodrama, and no one has really offered a compelling argument against it. Aside from what I've already written, the fact remains that melodramas don't sweep awards ceremonies and have their screenplays nominated for WGA Awards. Melodrama is drama that cheats to get its emotional effect. It's clear that I've spent far longer thinking about this than Ichirou has, who is content to sit back and offer lolz that I would dare to compare the theme of a film he dislikes to the theme of an Edgar Allen Poe story without once thinking about why I would do so or examining his own "rock solid" opinions to see if there's room for disagreement.

No one has actually made an argument though. BT kinda did when he talked about the band playing music as the ship went down, but that was as far as it went.

I would concede that the film has melodramatic moments, but I really don't feel that the whole thing is melodrama. The characters are a little too three-dimensional, the romance is a little too restrained for most of the film, and the social and philosophical commentary in the film is much more important than the romantic subplot.

That's what I got out of it, anyway, and why I liked it. I'm not the kind of person to watch something like that and say "omg, the love they shared was so profound, five out of five stars!"

How can you have a discussion with a moron who grasps and flails for literary comparisons to give the feces he spews some type of legitimacy? "Hmmm...well, rich people die in Masque of the Red Death, and there's a party...IT REMINDS ME OF TITANIC!!!! OMG MY BRILLIANT INSIGHT I WILL SHARE FOR ALL THE WORLD TO SEE!"

Why the fuck should I have to post to prove that something so obviously wrong has absolutely no validity, when it should be obvious to anyone with even a modicum of intelligence (though apparently not to the 160-plus IQ crowd)?

Nice, you troll my comparison while showing that you don't have the slightest grasp of why I made it.

You're a bigger idiot than I thought, Ichirou. The fact that you've seen some obscure films in your undoubtedly ample free time doesn't change that fact.

If you think my Masque of the Red Death parallel is so ridiculous, you could, you know, explain why, instead of constantly starting from a position of presumed correctness and assuming that all of your opinions should be self-evident.

All you've done is demonstrate that you are unable to differentiate a thematic comparison from a comparison of quality. You've also shown that you're unable to provide real arguments for your critical opinions when someone calls you out on them.

Triangle

A decent thriller, though too much like 2007's Timecrimes for me to be blown away by some of the things that it does. Also, there are some unexplained events in the movie that stick out like a sore thumb. Nevertheless, once it gets going, it can be quite captivating. Unfortunately, it's pretty easy to see where the movie's going before the halfway mark, though the last few minutes did mix things up a bit. All in all, if you haven't seen Triangle or Timecrimes, see Timecrimes. It's the better of the two.

Halo Legends

I liked it for the most part.
Origins I & II - were basically digital comics of the history of the Halo universe.  Some good art, but nothing special.  Decent as an intro
The Duel - Kinda neat.  It's super cheap but the watercolor filter they use makes it look cool at parts.  Has some nice bits.
Homecoming - lololol, Beetrain.  Holy crap this was bad.
One Man Out - wtf, I did not expect TOEI of all studios to make a super awesome short.  Great animation, freaking hilarious.  Slapstick Halo is where it's at.  It's worth watching the compilation just for this short.
Prototype - Bones turns Halo into Gasaraki mecha porn.  Great art and some good animation, but the story execution is weak.
The Babysitter - Some bad art and by the books plot aside, it's alright.  Has some style and solid execution.
The Package - ^^; STAR WARS x MACROSS mecha plane action.  This is what Halo would be if it was a saturday morning CG cartoon.  Pretty bad but entertaining.

Overall I thought it was a much stronger comp than the Batmanime or the terrible Dante's Inferno anime.  Not quite as good as the Animatrix, but worth watching.  I watched it in :uguu language because the dub got on my nerves in Homecoming.  Worth noting the subs are just closed captions to the dub and not actually subs that match/translate the Japanese track.

I dunno.  It was it didn't have the charm of being something Halo or as its own product.

Prototype was like, here is this beefy mech suit tearing shit up you fought against in 4+ games now--this would be awesome to play!

As someone who wasn't the biggest fan of the animatrix to begin with, these other ones have been getting worse.  The Batman one was really awful and this Halo one topped it.

Planet B-Boy

Really fun documentary following breakdance teams from Korea, France, Japan, and the US as they prep and take part in the big international competition.  The filmmakers don't try to hog the spotlight from the subjects, get a ton of entertaining footage, and show how much the competition and lifestyle matter to the people involved without forcing some pompous message about what it symbolizes.

It's a great, light watch and you can stream it on Netflix.

There's one reviewer for the Washington Post who reviews every Mamet movie by writing in fake-Mamet patter.

It's something that would probably seem a lot more clever as a blog post.  Plus they'd be more likely to leave the swears in.
