What happened to comics? ( i never read a comic)

Speculator comics flooding the market, for the most part. Expensive gimmick covers, multipart storylines which went on forever and you HAD to buy everything to understand what was going on, multiple shitty spinoff titles, that kind of thing. Comic shop owners overordering and getting stuck with piles of comics like the return of Superman storyline, Image comics titles going for like a year between issues and people losing interest. Tons of startup companies popping up overnight to cash in on the boom and producing absolute shit that they expected people to pay upwards of $5 for (and this was the 90s, remember) just because they slapped a hologram cover on it.

the parallels to me are:

Gimmick covers = "limited" editions and preorder bonuses
Neverending crossovers = DLC and microtransactions
Delayed issues and titles = Delayed games
Retailers over ordering = same
Upstarts flooding the market with crap that has no hope of selling anywhere other than a bargain bin
Both thinking every game/comic has to command top dollar

While you have a lot of points, the gaming industry has what the comic industry didn't have, or had but wasn't as sucessfull: an indie scene. Minecraft is huge on 360 and pc and phones and it's indie. Angry Birds? Indie. Indie games are ACTUALLY SELLING thanks to dd services. Did american comics have that? I find Toxic Adam's comparison surprisingly more apt though you raise A LOT of on point parallels, namely the point of reaching for top dollar.

Assassin's Creed 3 did like triple what Assassin's Creed games normally do; nearly 3 million.  I guess the change in setting or something really paid off.

It's the setting.

How did it do in Europe though?

So comics aren't apt, because there wasn't a big indie scene, but broadcast television is? :wtf

I think games we like will always be there with things like this.

There actually was big indie scene in comics back in the 90s, but most of the "indie" companies that cropped up  (Valiant, Malibu, Topps Comics, etc) focused on overhyped mainstream superhero knockoffs. There was always Fantagraphics, Dark Horse, etc. for an indie fix - those had already been around for years, but the price points were the same. There wasn't a cheaper indie alternative, true.

I think the parallel is more towards broadcast television. The major players will all be there and still very valuable entities, but the measuring stick of what is considered a 'success' will be greatly diminished.

Consumer dilution across the board. But there will still be a select few titles that breakout and sell millions and millions.

I think as long as there are 14-20 year old males, there will always be a market for a dedicated console. It's the perfect tool for escape and filling up hours of your time.

This is also roughly how I feel. At least for the upcoming generation. After that we will see how the internet and cloud stuff is progressing.

Uk Charts, this time we got Halo 4 number

Quote
‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II’ takes the crown for a 4th week at No1 (-15%).

It becomes the 4th title to hold four consecutive weeks at the top of our All Formats Chart in 2012 along with both FIFA 12, FIFA 13 and Lego Batman 2 (which has 5 weeks). ‘Far Cry 3’ (-8%) holds the No2 ahead of EA’s ‘FIFA 13’ (+18%) which stays at No3 despite a strong increase in sales. Retailer promotions continue to propel ‘Just Dance 4’ (+54%) up the chart from No6 to No4 ahead of another Ubisoft title ‘Assassin’s Creed III’ (+10%) at No5. ‘Hitman Absolution’ (-3%) slips to No6 while ‘Halo 4’ (52,340 / +36%) climbs a spot to No7.

A strong sales push sees ‘WWE ’13’ (+124%) back into the Top 10 at No10. Further down the chart the release of Sega’s ‘Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed’ (+39%) on PS Vita sees the title continue its week on week climb to No16. There’s also a debut for ‘Paper Mario Sticker Star’ new for Nintendo 3DS at No40.

You can't expect software to sell if no one is buying the hardware.

I have forgotten. Do the UK charts include bundled games in the chart? With Nintendo Land ranking higher than Mario, I suppose that is about the total amount of Wii Us sold. The vast majority prefer the Premium bundle.

It's kind of a shame, tbh.  I wanted the Vita or Wii U to be successful just to move Japan out of the PS2-age.  Now the 3DS is yet another outlet to just keep making (admittedly cheaper) PS2 games  :'(

Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest aren't out yet, right? even so, NSMB games are as popular in Japan as in the states, no?

Man, i seem to have upset a whole slew of sensitive flowers for daring to suggest that the WiiU might not sell above the Vita's launch.

I wasn't even trolling, it's just a prediction based on what i see happening here (no marketing, no demo units, limited adverts, no buzz, preorders still available after 3 months sitting on shelves etc). I didn't even mention the Vita, it was THOSE arseholes who said "SO it's GOING TO SELL LESS THAN THE VITA?! YOU TROLL HOW DARE YOU !!!!"

but nooooooooooo - it has to be some hidden agenda. I love how , even though Frenchy's 300k figure is below the Vita launch 3 days, that there's "0.0001% chance" the WiiU won't outsell the Vita over the same relative periods. Loool.

Some people are going to need therapy come Jan 2013.

NSMBU is sorta a lazy effort, but I didn't want it to bomb that hard. Granted, it's a 2D Mario game so it may have legs.

Still, if the game doesn't do as well as Nintendo expected, maybe they'll finally ditch that shitty style with the next 2D title.

I can't believe this is coming as such a surprise to anyone.  But I've gone up and down this several times now.

Double my pleasure, though.  It's been joyous watching the Vitards twisting in the wind this year, I'll gladly take a second helping of that next year with Nintard Tear dressing.

Funny thing is that both the Vita and Wii U are like "throw mud at wall, see what sticks" approaches.  And nothing stuck!

Now to see if Sony and Microsoft will learn from the mistakes of 2012's failures with their next consoles.

NSMBU is sorta a lazy effort, but I didn't want it to bomb that hard. Granted, it's a 2D Mario game so it may have legs.

Still, if the game doesn't do as well as Nintendo expected, maybe they'll finally ditch that shitty style with the next 2D title.

NSMBU is so lazy, aesthetically, and also so great, game-wise.  I almost want to say it wasn't laziness, but Nintendo was just playing it incredibly safe to cash in on the past successes of the NSMB series.  I can't tell if there are even new songs in NSMBU.

Nintendo didn't want to change the recipe, is what I'm saying.

I'm guessing it will take years for Nintendo to update their art assets to look on par with something like Rayman. It took Ubisoft three years and a 100+ team to complete it.

I think Vita has clearly shown that it's not enough to just have games, you need must have system seller games, games that sell millions. And you also need new business models,$60 fire&forget model is going the way of the Dodo.

As for WiiU,if UK market is any indication, people are not biting

Zero.  We might see a very pretty 3d Mario game though.

I'd pay full price for SMG1+2 HD collection while EAD Tokyo works their magic on a true sequel. Even though they've had problems with Dolphin, they still look fantastic in HD.
