How do you suggest they fix it then? Clearly the combat is a bigger problem than dungeon layout.

The combat is a bit problem, yes, but it would also be less of a problem if the act of dungeoneering itself were a bit more interesting. And it wouldn't be THAT hard to spice things up in the randomized dungeons:

-More variety of rooms [larger, more complex, varying elevations, ect.]
-Traps
-Unique aspects [items, monsters, types of rooms]
-In-dungeon sidequests [pretty much everything in Dark Cloud was just "find key, find exit"]
-Random encounters with NPCs in dungeons

There's a lot of stuff they could do other than just plopping down a few square rooms and adding in some monsters.

Or just throw in some sweet loot and call it a day.

Yes, but from your language you made it seem like the problem was that they were random. :smug Of course they could do a lot to expand upon the dungeons, but the idea of them being random wasn't why they were bad.

cloud-based H :-\ ME

or this is their DRM trick.  Each "retail disc" is actually a unique code that unlocks the ability to play PS4 games, which are safely stored on the other side of the cloud, so nobody can sell or pirate them.

and every time you want to access it, you have to boot up H :-\ ME and wait in line for the game.

Well, your post could be read in two ways:

1. Those are random dungeons which are nasty and are not nasty BECAUSE they're random, but because they're shit

or

2. they're nasty BECAUSE they're random.

A lot of people have issues with random dungeons. So which am I more likely to think?

Either way, Dark Cloud has dungeons that aren't much fun and there's no awesome combat to offset that. Well, they probably won't make another anyway, since the head guy is off making adult fantasy RPGs [White Knight Chronicles] and puzzle games for kids [Layton series].

I think you two lameos should stop around now.

Dark Souls isn't a game where you collect loot to build towns and synthesize items either. That's a really weird comparison.

It's a side talk about how Sony is less willing to spend on projects like Dark Cloud series unlike the past, so in a way it is tied to sales.

Dark Cloud 2 seems to have sold a decent amount and Level-5 certainly isn't above continuing to make more kid-friendly titles, so it's a bit weird that they haven't come back to the franchise again. Is it actually owned by Sony?

i would hope nobody was under the mistaken impression that vita (or 3ds outside japan) software is selling anywhere near acceptable numbers.

the only remarkable thing is that wiiU stuff is selling even worse.

Wait. Outside of Nintendo titles, I remember titles like Sonic, Skylanders, Tales of and Lego titles doing decent / well. At least in US. creamsugar posted both Vita and 3DS US top 20 up to June and 3DS showed generally not so bad software sales, with just Resident Evil: Revelations shining as the biggest flop by far.

And in the Vita list, Marvel v.s. Capcom shined as a game that didn't do as bad as everyone expected ( over 100k)

Here's both the list

Iwata interview

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/07/us-nintendo-console-sales-idUSBRE90605420130107

Quote
The company, which grew from making playing cards in the late 19th century into the blockbuster Super Mario video game series, is pinning its hopes on the Wii U after posting a first operating loss last year, as gamers ditch console games to play on smartphones and tablets.

"At the end of the Christmas season, it wasn't as though stores in the U.S. had no Wii U left in stock, as it was when Wii was first sold in that popular boom. But sales are not bad, and I feel it's selling steadily," Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said in an interview.

Iwata gave no details on sales or forecasts, but said Nintendo needed to focus on developing attractive software for its 3DS handheld device to draw new users, and increase Wii U sales as it battles competition from popular mobile devices. The Wii U carries video content from Netflix Inc and Hulu, and has a dedicated social gaming network called Miiverse, which allows users to interact and share games tips.

Quote
Iwata acknowledged the challenge of producing two Wii U models at the same time, as most customers wanted the premium package, which sold out quickly in many places, while there was a glut of the slightly cheaper Wii U model on store shelves.

Goddamn 3DS is never coming down. Basically the JP numbers are offsetting all the low to modest numbers it's generating everywhere else. Which works out great since it saves them the trouble of worrying about exchange rates.

RE6 sold 821k there?  crazy.  I'm surprised Japan has stuck with the series instead of getting turned off by its change in focus.

If I'm not mistaken it enjoyed a great debut but then dropped like a rock, even Capcom said something about it.

YoY is down but that's better than I was bracing for, guess Japan isn't doing so bad. And yeah, at least part of Nintendo's financial department is probably thrilled they're not getting gangraped by exchange rates for the time being.

One Piece game being on there is pretty surprising me, I've only recently realized how big that series has become in Japan but I wasn't expecting a licensed game to make top 10. But a rising franchise tide lifts all media boats, as they say.

In a week or two PS3 might overtake WiiU again in Japan it seems. Well played Nintendo.
