The market the Vita targets has tablets smartphones now.  The market the PS4 will target is still there.

The Wii U looks like it’s going to have more Gamecube-like appeal: long-time Nintendo fans will like it, but it won’t do well in the rest of the market.

The solution most people suggest is for Nintendo to exit the cut-throat, usually-low-margin hardware business and just make their well-known games for other platforms. But Nintendo’s hardware business isn’t low-margin at all. Suggesting Nintendo leave it would be like suggesting that Apple leave the hardware business.

Unlike Apple, Nintendo’s just not selling a lot of hardware anymore. That’s a big problem. But becoming a software-only business would almost certainly bring in far less revenue, especially if they wanted to sell their games on iOS, where nobody can sell games for $50.
Quote
Nintendo needs the profits of the high end, but they can’t compete there anymore. All of the growth is happening at the low end, which is mostly games that they can’t or won’t make. And even if they succeeded in casual gaming, it probably wouldn’t bring the kind of profit that they need.

I don’t think Nintendo has a bright future. I see them staying in the shrinking hardware business until the bitter end, and then becoming roughly like Sega today: a shell of the former company, probably acquired for relatively little by someone big, endlessly whoring out their old franchises in mostly mediocre games that will leave their old fans longing for the good old days.

Smart guy,but on the other hand who knows what the future brings.

What is amazing is that there are STILL delusional nintards in the NPD thread spinning this into an "exception" other than a rule. Their subconsciousness cannot deal with Wii U being dead and buried and on the short way to being discontinued in the US and Europe.

Wii U is dead, ninfags. DEAD. D E A D.

This isn't even fun anymore.  Lets focus our attention on Microsoft now.

If I were Mama Robotnik, I'd make a gif about the WiiU from the Simpsons scene where Mr. Burns spits out the 3-Eyed Fish, the reporters take photos of it mid-air, and leave declaring him a loser in the elections before it hits the ground :lol

I always like to be rationale and non-extreme but those numbers have to be terrifying to Nintendo. They are in a bad spot.

And all that gaf talk about releasing a new zelda, and mario kart, etc. If they think that is the answer to get them to the promised land, then they are deluding themselves. That works when you have a trojan system like the Wii, where everybody and his brother has one. When they are in the situation they are in now, all that is gonna do is create another gamecube.

Their system costs too much relative to what it offers. They are smack dab in the middle of a console contraction/correction. The core market is far more interested in PS4/720. And the PS3 and 360 still exist and are cheaper than you. It's like a perfect storm of getting fucked.

It only keeps getting better. If this hadn't been a 5 week NPD January the number would be

Quote
The Wii U sold just 46,000 hardware units in January at brick and mortar locations — a shockingly low number for a console that was just released in late November. To put it in perspective, the Wii sold 348,000 units during that system's comparable period in 2007.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/100463756

Not sure how they arrived at that number though unless they asked for the 4 week numbers and just didn't do a little simple math division.

edit: Ah I see.

Quote
Officially, according to NPD data, Nintendo has sold 57,000 Wii U units this year. The adjusted figure of 46,000 is a more accurate comparison to the 2007 figures, though, due to reporting calendar irregularities. (January's NPD results are a skewed due to the addition of a "leap week" the group has to add every five or six years to balance its reporting periods. NPD measures the year into 12 reporting periods of four or five weeks. That results in some date discrepancies, which require the leap week to be added occasionally.)

No big deal really. Its terrible either way. Next month should also be fun as its a real 4 week NPD.
