Re: Vita - they can plug the gap to some extent with some interesting demos and the rash of budget re-release of titles, but what would really help is throwing out a few -significant- announcements.

I was about to type "but , you know, Sony..." but recently they've been making all the right noises. I guess Kaz's diamond studed +60xD20 Damage to stupidity with Productivity bonus effect is getting some much needed cracking.

Iwata and Nintendo - i mean, lets come back in 12-18 months time when the Wii U is 19,800 yen and has Mario Kart, Mario Party and whatever else first parties all starting to drop. Price and first party are Nintendo's long term weaponry, so they're still going to hit 25m+ units worst case. That's way down on the Wii , but i'm sure that they've got more than enough wiggle on that price.

The dream of Wii style sales figures and massive 3rd party support and "base build for cross platform" is well and truly over though.

it is maybe a little less choppy than the Wii version but it's all over the place. It looks a lot cleaner but , yeah, this game is NOT a looker.

Also - a general arms in the air wave at the sky in anger.... this game is fully playable on the gamepad but you have to boot up and switch on the TV - it puts up a slime saying "oh, you can't do anything yet, look at the tv" style warning. So you have to login, get to the game, go to a menu, go to a submenu, then switch to Gamepad.

I thought the whole point was we'd be able to free up a TV? Having to have the TV on in the first place to boot up and start games seems somewhat daft when the game is clearly able to run 100% from the pad.

According to the bombcast the developers at GDC and PAX seem pretty happy with the PS4. I'd rather hear about them being happy over the typical forum goer.

Of course its hard to tell if they are genuinely happy with sony's direction or just pissed at Microsoft, Greenlight or whatever else

So that'd translate to about $450 US. That's kind of high but not terrible. I know better than to ever get any machine at launch at this point.

Just reading the general media response and stuff.  Enthusiast press and non-enthusiast press.  Sony's usually pretty good at whipping up hype, but the PS4 seems to have passed with all the power of a puff human interest piece.

They didn't show it. I know they don't have a finalized design, and they had to save something for E3, but even if it were just a concept render they probably ought to have released some sort of press pic. All they had was the controller.

Quote
PS4 will release in October and cost £300, according to a newspaper interview with Sony gaming CEO Andrew House.

The CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment spoke to British tabloid newspaper The Sun, in a business section article that states Sony's upcoming next-gen PlayStation 4 console will launch in October for £300.

House said that the console will attempt to appeal to female gamers more and that 'it's not all about shooting games'.

He told the paper: "We’re not going down the route of making the console pink of course…

“I think the key is to have people – and increasingly women – with different sensibilities creating different games. It is not all about shoot em up games.”

This may turn out to be untrue, but given that the information comes from an article which is an interview with SCE's head honcho via a national newspaper, it does lend the source some credibility.

But it is interesting to note that House is never directly quoted on the price/release date information, so this may be The Sun's own interpretation.

"Please be excited" sums up the PS4 so far, I think.

People are more excited than the last three hardware launches, but you get that nervous uncertainty vibe.  People feel like they should be excited, because it's a new gen finally, but nothing about it stands out as particularity exciting or different.  Lotta 1) catching up with other technologies and 2) improvements for content producers.  As an observer the improvements weren't contextualized well.  Like, 360, PS3, and Wii were immediately exciting and showed a discernible difference in several area.

Best part of the unveiling was when Sony slipped in the name and it took a minute for people to notice there was a 4 there.  Same font.  Same logo.  No 'box' to see.  No fanfare at the event. People wanted the lights to go down, Kaz Hirai lowered on to the stage holding a massive black box that says "THE PLAYSTATION." That, and the games shown were dull.

Expect a big announcement from Sony about its next-gen PlayStation 4 console this month or possibly in early May, a source familiar with the company's marketing strategy told PCMag this week.
...
GDC was probably the last big stage for the company to talk up the successor to the PlayStation 3 before the E3 gaming conference in June, unless Sony manufactures its own event. That's precisely what Sony plans to do, according to the source, who said late April/early May will be the likeliest timeframe for a full-blown launch of the PS4.

yeah, joking aside - the was no visible shortage of non-fruity coloured Vitas in aki and shinjuku a few days ago but all units sold out in the 3 local stores near mine.

If you want a vita and you are prepared to look then they are out there.

the Vita version is so spectacularly good that it hurts that it's nowhere near these two in sames. That said ... PSP version at 3980 and vita version at 6980 yen is likely destroying it even if it does shit all over the PSP version.

Darkstalkers Resurrection isn’t doing as well as he’d hoped, Capcom USA’s senior VP, Christian Svensson, shares on the company forums.

In a forum thread on Capcom Unity, one of the site’s users points out that Darkstalkers Resurrection was among the top-selling games on PlayStation Network games during the month of March (the game ranked #7 on the PSN charts). Unfortunately, Svensson says, it’s not as high on the chart as it needs to be in order to be considered successful.

“Sadly, it’s not as high on that list as it really needs to be to be successful,” Svensson wrote in his candid response.

“We’re working on promotions and the like to improve the situation. We’ve not given up. But I’m disappointed in the opening sales response relative to any other fighting title we’ve put out on the same platforms given the frequency and urgency of requests we’ve had here over the last several years and the quality of the execution. It is the most fully featured and probably best project of this type we’ve done.”

Svensson adds: “And before people jump to the wrong conclusions, I’m not blaming fans who did buy it and supported the brand. I’m very thankful for those guys (thank you, to all of you). I’m more disappointed by my misread of the information in this particular case.”

Last week, Svensson also hinted that Capcom would probably slow down on re-releasing their older fighting games for current platforms in light of waning sales. At the time, he explained: “It seems the novelty of such projects is wearing off even within just the fighting game community based upon the sales data of our last two launches.”

Yannis Mallat on next-gen trends, rising development costs, and managing a team of more than 2,700 people

If you're expecting the next generation of consoles to change everything, you may be a bit disappointed. Speaking with GamesIndustry International at the Game Developers Conference last month, Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat said he expects a continuation of market trends that have emerged in recent years.

"On one end of the spectrum you will have all the big, AAA blockbuster games that [offer] more and more production values, more value for the players, but there will be fewer of them taking a bigger chunk of the market," Mallat said.

On the other end of the spectrum, the developer said mobile initiatives, tablets, and Facebook will continue to bring in new customers to the gaming industry. The problem is with what falls in the middle of the spectrum.

"The in-between, the belly of the market, is the one that just collapsed in a way and disappeared," Mallat said. "Meaning there is no room for B-games, if I should say so, which proves the point of quality. I think that companies that put quality and consumer value as a primary focus, as we've been doing at Ubisoft, will enjoy great success."

That's not to say the new consoles will have no impact; Mallat said the arrival of a new generation of consoles will bring with it new perspectives and innovations, giving the recently struggling packaged goods market some much-needed traction. It also means rising development costs, but Mallat said he's actually found those "very manageable" of late.

"It's a question of bringing quality content to the gamers and enjoying great success thanks to that," Mallat explained. "So it's OK to invest more when you get more in return."

Quote
He noted Ubisoft's strong performance last year, saying the company is investing a lot in new technology, but still managing costs the right way. He added that the way the publisher uses larger development teams and cross-studio collaboration has also resulted in productivity jumps.

As the head of both Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Toronto, Mallat understands a bit about the logistics of managing those larger teams. The Montreal studio has roughly 2,400 developers, with another 300 or so in Toronto. When asked how he manages that many people, Mallat chalked it up to lean management and a bottom-up approach that empowers the creative talent.

"That's my recipe for AAA games," Mallat said. "You gather as much talent as possible, and you give them three things: Trust, means, and insane challenges. Usually they come back with pretty good stuff."

As for how big the studio can conceivably get before the current structure starts to break down, Mallat brushed the questions aside, saying, "I was asking myself the same question years ago when we were 1,400. Then I stopped asking myself that question, and we're still here and we're fine. I think it's working."

They really thought Darkstalkers was a ticket to the gravy train? LOL,why?

Because there were so many people that personally requested it from capcom on their message boards, whom are representative of the U.S. according to the Svennson School of Economics.

So apparently Dark Souls sold 300 000 units on pc. Nice sales for something that seems to have been an afterthought at best.

Not bad at all.

They weren't even going to do a PC port at first, but enough people showed interest [maybe there was a petition?] that they decided to go ahead and do it despite having no knowledge of how to handle a PC port.

Yeah, just checked wikipedia and there was a petition that was signed by 92 000 people. Nice too see that a huge turnout at a petition actually converted into good sales, hopefully some other japanese publishers are paying attention.

Also for the lulz I just looked up VGChartz pc numbers for Dark Souls and they had it at 10 000 as of march this year  :lol

And the patch that fixes most of the first game's problems takes literally five minutes to download and set up.

I didn't play Demons Souls, played through some of Dark Souls. And this has what to do with the PC version being a sub-par port? I'm sorry, is there a problem that I don't like how Dark Souls plays? ::)

How many of those 300,000K were at $30 or more though?  It was already selling for $15 about two months after release.

Not at all, I just found it humorous that you might be complaining about a port you didn't play. The PC version was practically identical to the console versions and I never had an issue during the 100 hours I logged without DSfix. I don't expect everyone to feel that way, but it was definitely "decent".

I was just really hoping they let you change the resolution, up the framerate to 60, and have real mouse camera controls in DS2. I like the DS atmosphere, it's got some very cool environments. I'll give DS2's combat a fair shake.

I'll grant that the m+kb controls probably suck ass, but the game was designed around a controller input. I don't play PC ports of console games any other way these days.

Proper m+kb and dual analog controls would be nice in Dark Souls.  About the only "major" change I'd want to the combat.  Lock-on is too finicky, even if there's a logic to the range and such.

Holy shit, that sounds rad. And seriously, the guys at From must've been praising the sun when they got that sales info in.
