I'm sure the new consoles will do ok over a 5/8 year course again, but I can't help to shake the feeling the world has moved on from console gaming. Maybe not our old ass generation of hardcore gamers, but a large portion of the kids... I dunno.

iPads are great for casuals which are the majority of the market.  Even for niche gamers they are becoming quite good (strategy, rpg etc.)

The only thing they can't do atm is competitive games like FPS, Sports, Moba, and games with precise controls etc. All the games that are still selling shitloads on consoles/pc basically.

Just coming out is not enough, it takes a few years before these devices sell enough to impact sales of other devices. Don't forget most of the world uses Android and that came out a few years later still.

I'd say it's right about now that these devices are reaching critical mass worldwide.

My anecdotal evidence (aka the best evidence) shows that nobody I know plays games on a console anymore.  They play games on smartphones and tablets.  Some are heavy users, others can just play 15 minutes of Bejeweled and get their gaming fix that way.

The death knell will be when Logitech releases that iPhone controller.  There's still a subset of gamers who hate playing touchscreen games (myself) and with that barrier removed, even more people are going to start moving over.  Also as Google Play continues to get better, that is going to continue the erosion of console gamers.

Not that the Wii U would be any less fucked had none of this been going on.  Nintendo shit the bed on this one, regardless of how many iDevices and heat waves strike it.  If I was Iwata, I'd be fucking embarrassed at those results.

And that is why Nintendo is so fucked.  It seems like their core model was bringing in little kids to replace the outflow of older gamers who went to Sony or Microsoft.  Now that kids are going to iOS and Android, that well is rapidly drying up.  All they have are nostalgic Nintards reliving their childhoods and people who just buy every console or handheld because they have that kind of spare income.

I admire Iwata for not committing seppuku at this point.

It's not in steady decline, it's in free fall.  And the three pieces of new hardware introduced so far have completely floundered.  And software is also in the toilet.  We have literally never seen percent declines this steep year over year over year since the mid-80s.

But sure, nothing's wrong that more new hardware won't fix.  I'm sure people will give up their smartphones and tablets with their embarrassment of free/cheap games for new consoles from Sony and MS with $60-70 games again.
