I find it amusing that there are people laughing at "Xbox*", considering how long Sony used "PlayStation family" for their PR to sound decent.

As Oscar sez, how important is being first in a rapidly declining industry?

Bone under 150k, PS4 under 300k.  They're the top two platforms for the month.  PS4 barely edged out the PS3's first January.  Bone sold less than the GBA did in January 2007.

Nobody's doing much winning here.

Eh, Oscar don't forget PS4 is still pretty supply restrained.  With ample supply it'd be much higher than 300k.  PS4 has fairly good momentum going right now.  They just need to do some stuff to maintain it until fall.

They never have signs for Xbone because it was never out of stock.

This implies that some of the sales aren't as a result of people rushing to buy it because they hear it is supply constrained. Nothing like artificial scarcity to increase demand.

I dunno, I don't look because it's not worth the time, but I see people posting availability searches from big areas all the time and it's still usually out of stock at most stores and the ones that do have them still are making a big deal when they have supply in.

Definitely not as low stock as Nov/Dec, but still a lot of people can't just walk into a store and impulse buy one yet.  Maybe Feb?

something like that. the sales of all the others have to be more than the ps4 for sony to boast that it's the ps4 and ps3 outperforming everything else combined (unless by console they meant console and not handheld).

Who cares that the industry is changing, get over it already. There will always be games anyway and judging by the 5 games you guys finish a year there is a lifetime supply already.

EA must be crying themselves to sleep by now together with MS

I've said it before, but this isn't a battle over dollars. It's a battle over time.

There is only so much free time in a day for people and the space once reserved for playing console games is now being crowded out by other forms of entertainment.

Not all is lost, console gaming is like rap music. As long as there are 18-24 yr old dudes, it's going to be around in some form. The gaming console company that hyperfocuses on that idea and quits trying to be 'all things to all people' will survive.

the thing i don't get about the supply constrained argument is that both manufacturers managed to push a million(ish) out in december to resupply the initial launch sell-outs.

did they look at these sales and think "woah, better cut down those factory orders. can't have those kids working overtime" and somehow manage to only push a quarter of those numbers out the next month?

They could ship the initial stockpile of units in such a way that they arrive in several large waves [in order to avoid overloading retailers while maintaining a somewhat steady supply] over the course of the first two months or so, but in subsequent months they'd be constrained solely to what they could produce and deliver in that month. I have no idea if that's the case, though, but I still haven't seen a single PS4 at the local Best Buy [but they've still got a huge stack of Xbones that hasn't budged].

I believe the Sony 'supply constrained' argument though. I look on Ebay/Craigslist and you can find new consoles going for 10-20 percent above retail. Whereas the Xbox One listings are more in line with what you find with a typical new console (slightly less than retail).

Not all is lost, console gaming is like rap music. As long as there are 18-24 yr old dudes, it's going to be around in some form. The gaming console company that hyperfocuses on that idea and quits trying to be 'all things to all people' will survive.

Right, but the segment will be unable to support its 'everything AAA' lifestyle and it's ever-increasing need for more sales and more gamers. That model simply does not work without robust year-over-year market expansion. I don't know how consoles get from the diseased state to the post-AAA reality that the PC has already adopted without completely wrecking the major players in the process.

Probably it won't, just like back in 1983.

Oscar you know about sales, but its so tiring to have everyone saying consoles are dead every 10 seconds. This decline has been going om for years. Its boring.

Frag, im sure they will adapt somehow just like the pc did, think lots of games  be made by smaller teams and devs again. Smaller budgets maybe, but more nimble and flexible teams that will bring great games to us.

Technically we are at a point where making a decent looking game is not too hard with the tools available. Its that triple aaa look that will be reserved for a few games a year max. Just like im movies you only have a few blockbusters a year.

I've said it before, but this isn't a battle over dollars. It's a battle over time.

There is only so much free time in a day for people and the space once reserved for playing console games is now being crowded out by other forms of entertainment.

Pretty much. We're basically getting shat on with various forms of entertainment on the go or at home. Too much shit to watch on your streaming subscription, too many playlists on spotify, too many games in your steam list, too much blogs and websites to follow, too many new apps poping up everyday.

Seems like you either have to hit it out of the park a la GTA,CoD, Minecraft or cater to a specific niche with the according budget if you want to survive.

Shitting on MS is more relevant then your doom and gloom thats years old, maybe you shouldnt click on sales if you dont want to see it. We all heard your prediction about consoles years ago already bro. Xbone vs PS4 sales is the new topic.

Only thing that is petering out is the bone, ps4 is still sold out here. It sold like what, 3 million in the us in 3 months?

Im sure PS4 will still manage 70/100 million in its lifetime. Thats a great install base for games.

Have you entertained the option that this just might be a lopsided gen where Sony grabs 75% of the market?
