I believe it's one of the games in the bundle that activates with the larger variety of Half-Life/CS keys. (Especially any old retail ones.)

HL, Opposing Force, Blue Shift, CS, DoD, TF:C, DM Classic, Ricochet is what you get IIRC

Well, first there's the original Counter-Strike. Then in 2004, they released Condition Zero, an update/map pack. People didn't like it that much. So later in 2004, they ported CS to the source engine [Counter-Strike: Source] with lots of updates. In 2012, they released Global Offensive, a true sequel to the original.

Steam is just a small part of the PC industry.  You also have the F2P juggernauts and Blizzard games.
