I re watched an old favorite tonight: 101 Dalmations. It was like seeing an old friend. I was obsessed with it when I was young and it has aged delightfully. The art and animation are so on point. The xerography allows a sketchiness to the original outlines in the animation to burst through and make the imagery raw and alive.

I love it.

I screen capped some of my favorite scenes and backgrounds. Such pure art.

My favorite part is still the Cruella da Ville song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXTQWVqBDWY

When Roger comes downstairs and hums the song and the way he stares at the ceiling. So human. "You like my new sooooong?" "Tee tum tee tuh tummmm." That's the Disney magic that captured my heart. So human and real.

The watercolor bgs. FUCK. I fan gasmed all over it.

And the opening. Where each staff type gets their own stuff. Music gets music notes, layout shows beautiful backgrounds. Effects shows off their pinache for bringing the world alive, and animation department shows their new xerography technique in action.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34e-ADjBwG4

ART.

And the narration with Pongo judging other dogs/humans as he finds a mate for Roger:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulsjuiFO2J0

CHARM OUT THE ASS.

THOSE BACKGROUNDS AND THE STORIES THEY TELL in such beautiful water color and (I believe) gauche. That mood and atmosphere. That cinematography!

And the character design. So on point. Realistically proportioned but given their own animated flair. Far away from the dreadful character design in modern American animation.

Of the classic era, this was always my favorite and I was so psyched to revisit after a life time away. It - unknowingly at the time - influenced a lot of the film direction I like with George and Anita being so relatable and human.

Disney!!

I don’t like Bakshi.

Yeah, I can relate. I think Bakshi was appropriate for the era, and innovative enough on his take on rotoscoping. But there's rarely the kind of marriage between the roto'd and hand-drawn work doesn't work in the same way when Disney uses the same technique.
Title: Re: Western animation thread
Post by: Himu on February 20, 2019, 02:01:02 PM
My problem stems not only from the animation but also content. When I think of western animation that tries too hard to be adult, and ends up being more shock than relating truly anything to an actual adult experience, I think of Bakshi. The guy says animation is primarily made for shock as well. We just have completely different visions of the medium. His films are often vulgar and wanting.
Title: Re: Western animation thread
Post by: HardcoreRetro on February 20, 2019, 02:31:02 PM
The dude's a provocateur. The question is not: "how mature is my work."  The question is: "How far can I push the medium."

Adult, kids, mature, whatever are all dumb labels anyways. What's the measure for actual mature content?
Title: Re: Western animation thread
Post by: Himu on February 20, 2019, 03:01:06 PM
For me adult says something about life. When I say adult I don't mean something specifically meant for adults. For example, I find a lot of Tezuka's work to be adult despite being made for kids. His work tells me something about life that I can relate to in terms of theme. I posted The Big Snit earlier. To me, that's adult in the messages it conveys that I can relate to as a person. Bakshi always felt more interested in shock to the point of juvenality. But that's just my own subjective opinion and taste. For me, adult isn't a matter of "how mature is my work?" and more "how does this relate to the human experience?"

I quite like Don herzfeldts indie stuff. Specifically World of Tomorrow 1 and 2.

I saw this German oddity Felidae far too young. I still find it pretty interesting, if extremely twisted now. Possibly too edgy for its own good. Well made neo-noir thriller that takes liberty with exploring the graphic.

Jan Svankmajer is a stop motion genius. Little Otik is well worth a check, and his short films can be really entertaining.

Heh, when I saw this thread I thought about posting Ulysses 31, but wasn't sure I should since it was a French-Japanese coproduction. I wish there was an HD version available. I wonder if the original negatives even still exist...
Awesome score, too. The soundtrack actually was released on CD a few years ago: http://www.parallax.fr/9.ulysse31str/ulysse31str.htm

I love this reimagined design:

I would pay a pretty penny for a remake looking like this.

Been on something of an animation docu kick.

Persistence of Vision was fricking great, and I've heard good things about this "banned" docu made by Sting's wife on how they changed Kingdom of the Sun into "the more commercial" Emperor's New Groove. Apparently it makes a few specific Disney execs look like fucking morons. :lol Watching shortly.
