Bill Gates appears to have been dethroned as the world's richest man. But based on his past comments, he probably isn't disappointed. The Microsoft Corp. chairman and co-founder has been overtaken on the world's richest list by Mexican telecommunications tycoon Carlos Slim, according to a Mexican financial news service quoted by Reuters.

When I lived in Los Angeles, we had a friend of our social circle (he was a film school grad, as were most my friends) whose father is rich and resides in Mexico. He paid for his film school and gave him an allowance that was infinite. The dude had like ten iPods and PowerBooks and everything. One of my good friends went to Mexico to stay with him and his family, and said while it's cool (he has a mansion and a helicopter and stuff), they live pretty much in constant fear of being kidnapped for ransom.
