Title: So my next system will probably be a Wii
Post by: Candyflip on July 04, 2007, 08:36:49 AM
Yeah. Been playing Excite Truck, Mario Party, and all the sports games and I have to say this system is a lot less shitty than I thought it would be. It also helps that it's got such an attractive price. My arms are sore from playing the boxing game. What other games don't blow complete ass? Mortal Kombat was pretty bad. I want to try Twilight Princess.

It won't die on you a year later either. I plan on getting it when some major game like No More Heroes or Mario Galaxy comes out.

none of its games are any good, you're only deluding yourself because you're desperate to look trendy

the Wii isn't next-gen either... man up and get a PS3 or a 360

I never thought I'd see the day when liking a Nintendo system/games equals trying to be trendy. :lol

Btw, according to futami, the 360 isn't "true next gen" either.

duh, the only reason why this shit sells is because the system and the controller look like an Ipod

compactness and sleekness are features that are way more in demand than when the PS2 was being released in 2000...

:rofl

A PS3 has a whole bunch of compelling exclusives, plus a very exciting year 2007 and loads of multiplatform gaming goodness. And it plays Blu-Ray discs, is extremely reliable, and extremely quiet, unlike an Xbox 360 which sounds like an hair dryer.

I used to make fun of the Wii, but not anymore.   My 360 red lighted 2 days ago after only 2 months....at least you can trust that your Wii will last an eternity.  Please, buy Guilty Gear XX when it comes out, ok?

Definitely buy Kororinpa and get some of the VC games if you are into retro. I enjoyed Elebits but YMMV.

After 6 months now, I havent had any problems with my Wii. I really like the system, but the problem is the usual one for Nintendo consoles since the N64 - there arent any games. I own 2 games, and neither is a Wii game! Lolz. Zelda TP and RE4 are those games, BTW.

I'll by GGX Accent Core on PS2, where I can use a decent controller.

Scarface
Excite Truck
Wario Ware

Wii is like early PS2 Gen. Just one sight of the graphics in Scarface will tell you this (and Scarface actually SLOWS down the wii, and makes the "Home" button run slow) :lol

Excite Truck is trash. The only reason why Excite Truck is popular is because N-Tards are too adolescent to play a grown up arcade racer like Burnout.

yeah I had to get one for metroid.

For multiplayer games, Wii is by far the funnest system.  You just don't get the same amount of competition and pressure when playing party games on the other systems or when playing online.  A lot of the games are hard to figure out until you play them in multiplayer.  More or less it's going to be something you KNOW you're going to need eventually because of the amount sold and it's actually worth the price if you want multiplayer or party games.

SSSB is a steaming pile of nostalgia-detritus of Nintendo's legacy-that appeals to the kind of person who never really got past the phase of watching the same three movies over and over and over as a kid.

Play a marble madness derivative (monkey ball is a good modern one, katamari is somewhat similar) or any Burnout games' crash mode instead. Way better.

You don't get good competition when playing games online? Elaborate, because I'm not buying it at all-my experience on the PC is that online gaming is totally cutthroat, and if you can't get good competition it's either because you've ascended to godhood at the game or no one is playing it anymore.

how so? it does look like last gen shit. first-person shooters are the one genre that hurts the most when the visuals are dated, and given how awful the previous two metroid prime titles were, can you blame me for being negative?
Title: Re: So my next system will probably be a Wii
Post by: etiolate on July 05, 2007, 04:30:28 PM
You're assumptions on FPS games and graphical aging is that they all are based on realism, which Metroid obviously is not.  The GC ones are still nice to look at for geometric design, style and effects.  The new Prime 3 shots look better than the GC ones, with an angular and smoother look.

no, that's not my assumption at all. in a genre that goes for full-on immersion by placing you directly into the character, detail is tantamount.

Somewhat, I suppose. The big difference, at least to my eyes, is that Marvel vs. Capcom is first a fighting game, then a character/mascot nostalgia-fest. People don't buy it or play it because "OMG Wolverine slices things", they dig it because it's a fast, easy-to-learn, ridiculously over the top 2D fighting game. Smash Brothers, on the other hand, always felt more about the mascot showcase than the actual gameplay (which is both basic and boring, IMO).

Then again, you'll rarely see me speak well of any brand of gaming entertainment targeted towards the plebes and simpletons, so I might be missing something in my evaluation of Smash Brothers (I played the Gamecube version a bit when I borrowed it from a friend a long time ago. Wasn't impressed, as you could might tell).

I bet most of you haters didn't spend more than an hour with Smash Bros and just shrug that shit off because "OMG nintendo is teh kiddy!" bullshit... the game gets to be surprisingly pretty deep... nothing quite as deep as frame-counting in VF5, or memorizing long-ass button sequences, but like hell you'll find 99.99999% of the populace who'd pick up and give VF5 a try, when the Smash series has much more universal appeal. Hell, Melee was one of the games they had for tournament play at Evo, the largest fighting game tournament in America. I think Melee is the perfect mix between pick up and play and hardcore and I am looking extremely forward to Brawl.

Frag... no offense but your constant condescending attitude gets really annoying.

Yeah, can't say I agree. They both rely well known characters, yet both are also lauded for their gameplay. I'm not going to argue with you about which game is better, but I think its unfair to just brush of SSB as basic/boring. Yes, it's an easy, accessable game but at the same tiime, it's surprisingly deeper than most people give it credit for. You're nostalgia/mascot assessment would probably work better for something like Mario Party, which most people can agree isn't really good, and constantly gets lower reviews, unlike SSB.

Smash Bros is fun, but it's by no means a great game.  I have no idea why it's ascended to some grand echelon of quality for Nintendo fans.  Also, Metroid Prime 3 is likely going to be as bad as the previous 2 games because of it still using autoaim.  And the visuals are unimpressive.

with online play, you don't nearly hit the other guy trying to swing a bat.  I only mean that when you're playing shallower party games.  I personally would rate it (for games that get it well) singleplayer>>>>>>>>wii party games>other multiplayer games.

We will agree to disagree, wwe like total opposite types of games, I am definitely more of a simple, pick up and play type a guy... but I think it's cool that you are into stuff like TA and Supreme Commander and all these games that I don't think I'd ever have the time to sit down and learn to play.

I had this dream when I was like 8 years old that there was a game based on Lucky Charms... and it was kinda like Mega Man, you had to get the different charms, and you can pick which charm to go after first, in a level select taken straight from the Mega Man games. A cereal mascot game would be amazing though, you could have the Trix Rabbit, Sonny, Snap/Krackle/Pop (kinda like the Ice Climbers), Tony the Tiger (I have a feeling he'd be a bit too overpowered), Count Chocula, the burglar from Cookie Crisp... holy shit I would so buy that game!

Title: Re: So my next system will probably be a Wii

I own a Wii and have enjoyed it so far.  My only worry with the Wii would be third party development.  If you chart the last 2 generations of Nintendo third party support it would look like the following.

N64: Launch lineup was basically Mario 64 and no one cared for the first month because the game was so great. But basicaly non-existent third party.  Great second party.  Rare.  And many WWE fans claim the N64 games were among the best in the genre.

GameCube: Great lauch lineup.  Better support from Japanese devs, such as Capcom and Namco, but it fizzled as the PS2 ran away with the generation.

Wii: Amazing buzz from e3 due to Wii Sports and interest from casuals, but lauch lineup was meh.  So far much of the third party development has not been the most ambitious.  Stand outs have been EA and Ubisoft, more due to support than quality,  Greater install base this time around should net better third party exclusives.  Only time will tell though.

My anticipated titles:

Metroid Prime 3
Nights 2
Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Super Mario Galaxy
Zack and Wiki
No More Heroes
Animal Crossing

There is tons of detail in Prime... but nothing that exactly relies on tech, just more on being thought out. Like the rain trickling off the invisible platforms.

it's pretty fucking plain snobby (just not in a funny way) to think you need detail from polygons, textures, and shaders to get somebody immersed.  There's nothing that I see in games on next-gen systems that is impossible to do (and keep all the artistic quality) on Wii with Metroid Prime.
