I'm not drawing them...or writing them...I'm typing on a computer, for one.

Second of all, the legitimate use of the ampersand is so limited, I don't want students getting into the bad habit of using it as a substitute for "and" in any written text.

It is a throwback to like, pre-16th century. An ampersand is technically supposed to be a shorthand representation of et.

That's a shortcut in handwriting. I don't really understand why people do that, or the backwards 3 struck vertically. Drawing an ampersand is fun.

Oh I can draw a proper ampersand, and I used to use them in my handwriting. I just like the aforementioned alternate version more.
