Title: Transformers was great fun
Post by: Himu on July 10, 2007, 01:36:31 AM
I really wanna love the movie, but I only end up liking it. It's got a lot going for it, I mean, it's the fucking Transformers for God's sake but...there are two key things null my enjoyment of it (if only by a bit I guess?):

1. Too long.

2. It's not even about the fucking Transformers. They play the back seat and serve only as a comedic device. I don't care about you and miss Mary Jane Rottencrotch, Shia. I don't care about those goddamn soldiers who kept popping in and out. I don't care about Anthony Anderson, why is that distinguished black fellow in this movie? I want my Optimus Prime, Megatron, and co. actually serving as characters and actually having..you know, development. But what I got was fluff. However, for what it is, as a big and I mean BIG giant robot fan, the last 30 - 40 minutes made me feel like a little boy again.

I will be purchasing it on dvd, hopefully the directors cut trims most of the fluff out because next to Knocked Up, it's definitely the funnest summer movie I've seen thus far.

I'm in the mood for some giant robot action. I am pretty positive the original cartoon hasn't aged well, so I have a hankerin' for Beast Wars. I always preferred the Beast Wars storyline anyways. Is that shit on dvd?

yes, he feels that if its lesser bits saw a trim and there was less "fluff, "he'd be willing to give it another go. Possibly to the level of...Knocked Up?

The cartoon never had giant robots blowing shit up - it was a lame animated adventure with laser guns.

If you cannot spot the difference between realistic computer generated and practical effects and a lame Sunday morning cartoon show, I feel sorry for you!

GI Joe was fine as a kid, but even my 6-7 year old self could see that the concept behind transformers was fundamentally distinguished mentally-challenged.

Seeing large metallic robots tear through cities and knock the crap out of each other tickles my fancy.  Not because it's Transformers, but because it looks real.  They could make another robot or - hell! - even a monster movie employing the same effects crew and I'd dig that.  I'm a fan of robots and monsters destroying stuff.

It's not a popular opinion, but I always thought GI JOE was far better than Transformers and even moreso that the GI JOE animated movie was way better than the Transformers one despite the silliness of Cobra La.

Interesting fact.  Optimus was not originally planned to die.  The GI JOE movie started production first and they had planned to kill off Duke and have Falcon shape up and take the leadership position.  The GI JOE movie got delayed though, and the Transformers writers liked the idea and lifted it.  Parents complained, and they had to change GI JOE when it was released.

It was pretty dumb.  Instead of saying Duke died, Scarlett says he slipped into a coma.  They didn't change the video at all.  The writer said that if you watch it with the audio off, it's pretty obvious that he's supposed to die.  At the end of the movie, you hear Doc say over the radio "Great news, Duke's come out of his coma."

Of course, GI JOE never made it to theatres after TF bombed, but if it had on time, Optimus might not have died due to the backlash from it.

Aren't most of the people here (Willco, TVC 15, Himu) in their very early twenties?  They sort of missed out on the whole original Transformers phenomenon in the eighties, I think.

I'd pay to see any movie involving robots if they looked cool and destroyed shit - like in Bay's movie.  Now, if the Transformers looked like the cartoon counterparts, it would probably be lame and I probably wouldn't see it.

The sexuality projected by He-man was just so antiquated and crude, like the gay "body building beefcake" mags of the 60s.  If He-man wished to really tap into the sexuality of the children of the era, he should have been wearing popular contemporary bondage gear, like this:

Loincloths and muscles are so camp.  He-man was dated before it ever aired, from the POV of contemporary children's homosexuality.

I missed out too, but I was a weird kid.  My older brothers had all the toys, and I was obsessed with them.  I would even buy all the old VHS of the cartoon from video stores.

I believe He-Man was only created because Hasbro was supposed to make toys for Conan the Barbarian, but after they realized how mature it was, they altered their toy line slightly and created He-Man.

I was never a Gen 13 guy.  I have a few issues of Wildcats, though... I hope that doesn't count.

I obtained some of the Transformers comics recently but there's so many different generations/subplots/side stories that I didn't know which ones to read. I just went with the 80 issue US version. The UK version is based off the same story as the US version but its like 300+ issues so blegh to that one. Am I going to be reading the right version?

It's comic books about transforming robots.  Who cares about continuity that much?

Thank you Himuro. I wish the Transformers comics were as simple as Spiderman's or something. I also have all the Spiderman, X-Men, and Batman comics (just the actual Batman, not the Detective Comics).

One of these days I'm gonna sit here and read em all and its going to be awesome.

Oh? Is Willco a confirmed Top Cow apologist? Are there any recent Top Cow properties he's championed against all odds and common sense?

There are Top Cow apologists??  Most of their stuff made no fucking sense to me other than the Darkness, which was fun to read at times.  Witchblade went all over the place and sucked royally.  It was like nothing ever fucking happened in that comic.  The Witchblade stories featuring past wielders were always better and far more interesting.  Witchblade Takeru (the Japanese version) is okay too, although the artist draws everything in a painfully perverse fashion.  It's only two volumes and is over quick.  I still haven't watched most of the anime, which seems pretty interesting and surprisingly decent.

Gen 13 was fuck awesome whenever Adam Warren was writing it.  And then when they brought the series back, only to reveal that the original Gen 13 kids weren't dead at the end, that shit fell apart too.  WildCATs was poo for most of its lifespan, although when they totally changed everything and made it pretty much non-superhero and non-X-Men rip off, it was kinda fun.  I see that Jim Lee came back to restart everything from scratch; did that series start yet?  Anything decent?  I pretty much stopped reading comics when I came to Japan two-plus years ago...occasionally download scans of some stuff here and there.  I liked Marvel Zombies.

I dug The Darkness and that was it.  And that was just up to a point, because it got crazy convoluted.  I vaguely remember the Batman/The Darkness crossover.
Title: Re: Transformers was great fun
Post by: bork on July 10, 2007, 03:21:55 AM
The Darkness had the WORST fucking costume ever.  I kept wondering why he even needed one...it's like these artists and writers just can't let go of costumes no matter what kind of comic they make.  Was glad to hear that the recent game got rid of all that.  The comic fell apart when they had Jackie "die" so he could go bring back that dead bartender chick, or whoeever it was that got killed.

Witchblade should have been a more violent series, with the blade changing hosts all the time.  That's kind of why I like the Japanese versions, because the witchblade makes the wielders all hot and violent.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
And they DON'T have the happiest of endings...the glove fucks them up!

Yeah, the costume blew.  I was glad the game got rid of it.

And The Darkness officially jumped the shark when Batman told Jackie to reform, resulting in the bartender's death and that whole thing.  The crossover pretty much killed the series for me.

Yeah the made the character a MILF with humongoid breasteseses etc etc but as I was downloading and just briefly checking through each ep (to see the quality), I noticed something.  Here's a show that got all kinds of shit for self-censorship (she's only half-naked in the DVD version), and the majority of the episodes don't have her transforming anyway, so it shouldn't have been that big a deal.

I have seen some of the toys they released here....those things are a different story.  I think one statue made me blush...the character has a blade sticking out of her special spot!   :lol

But despite all that, it's not about the animu titties (really!) and is heavy on story.  Seems pretty good to me.

It's not just Marvel, that's pretty much everyone making comics.  You have to do that, or all the characters would be too old/dead now.  The thing I like about Marvel is that they stick with their one main universe (616) for everything, and don't have big-ass crossover events like DC does with 99344429494392493923943 versions of Superboy from 1955 showing up and wrecking shit.  They pretty much keep the other universes they create self-contained, or just use one book to have different universes together, like Exiles.  That's the way to go.
