I have a theory that the reason MS didn't show anything at there conference for 2008 is because they're already migrating developers behind-the-scenes to the Xbox 360 successor. MS has shown a fantastic willingness to cut bait at the first sign of trouble and their PC-centric origins seems to have convinced them that might makes right.
With the recent hardware issues on 360, I expect them to call a mulligan and start over in a new generation rather than try to actually work things out. The more PS3 games start to look better than 360 games, the more they'll feel pressure to "jump ahead" again.
They've never given developers that "grace period" at the end of a hardware lifecycle to churn out awesome, omega-generation games (PERSONA 3 :violin), so why start now?
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again! The more times you try the more chance you have to get things right!
The question is, what year will Xbox 720 / Xbox Wonderful / Xbox 3 be on store shelves available for gamers to buy. Not the first info from MS but actually a retail product. VOTE!

anyways, I liked the 360 stuff better IMO. I really wished they would have shown some other titles like Alan Wake and Fable 2 though.

MGS4 will be a top 3 contender for GOTY. Killzone 2 will suck ass, just like the 1st one. Mark my words. If I'm wrong, you get to fuck Himumu any way you want.

I really don't think anyone is going to release a new machine until 2011, to be honest. It's really in the industry's best interest overall to extend the life of consoles beyond what they currently are at.

the sony lineup had more unknown titles or titles that had limited exposure, but overall, microsoft had more blockbusters and exclusives. still, we get excited for the NEW, not the OLD.

They gave it like 4 years, man, and not a month more! And the only thing that came out for the last 6 months was Jade Empire! And when it got old, they didn't give it a smaller hardware revision and a new kids game focus. No! They took it out back and put a bullet through its brain!

the only reason it lasted all of four years is because MS couldn't renegociate its contracts with Nvidia and Intel on the GPU and CPU in the Xbox... it's not a problem anymore since they own the IP for both XCPU2 and Xenon

I think you are right. And I think we may see a slowdown in the PS GPU market, too. Perf barriers are getting more difficult.
Note that I fully expect Nintendo to have a new product in 2-3 christmases since the Wii has a crippled shelflife. But they don't count as a games company anymore, anyway. The HD standard is still supposed to go itno effect in 2009 for broadcasts, and if Nintendo doesn't follow the tv stations, they will look silly.

MS knows what their fanbase is comprised of. Bitter Sega fanboys who will drop trou at the sight of any new shiny piece of hardware they throw their way. MS just has the capital to keep the charade up longer than Sega did.
2010 ... except this time the machine will have swappable parts so they can nickel and dime their fanbase through MS-only hard drives and graphic cards and help keep up with Sony when they bring theirs out in 2012.

I think MS is gonna hit 2010 for sure. I even see 2009 as a long-shot possibility, but with the 65nm refab they are probably going to want to wait another year. I can't see them waiting til 2011. No way.
PS4 will be 2012 or 2013.

4-5 years has been the general console lifecycle. Sony stuck with the PS2 because it was WINNING. The Xbox wasn't worth dragging around at the expense of the 360

If they do it before 2011 they will lose money. Even if it was 2010, they wouldn't be pulling devs off 360 already. This thread is fucking stupid.

Actually, it looks like the shutoff date in 2009 is just the date when analog ntsc television will be shut off. Without reading the actual bill/law/whatever, this summary doesn't specify HDTV or EDTV. I guess it can be either or, but the way things are going, it looks like the industries have chosen HDTV.
